We are not declaring war, we would only be using force against a military target making an unwise theft of property. Firing on the ship after its refusal to return property is an appropriate course of action IMO. This was not an accidental allegedly) ramming or a salvage op from a sunken vessel. This was outright brazen theft of military technology in International waters.

Turkey and Russia did not go to war over a shot down jet and dead soldiers. China would not go to war over a shot up ship. But they may think twice about stealing technology from open waters again.

Opening fire, or drawing weapons on a ship in international waters could be considered an act of war. In the interest of saving face, it would be interpreted as such by Chinese heads of state. The ramifications for this would affect almost everything that you buy, drive, hear, or touch. Do you really think it's worth it for a piece of technology that probably is built with 50% or more of parts made in China?

China might not go to war...but they could impose economic sanctions and stop selling to the US, or stop purchasing US goods, or increase efforts in hacking (which they have had good results thus far.)

Tensions are already high in the South China Sea, pointing weapons or firing shots across the bow is a way to take high tensions and create a small skirmish which could escalate into something quite a bit larger. Both skippers of their respective vessels knew this...most people know this.

Trump needs to tell china our debt it now paid in full due to them stealing technology. Its not required to repay someone who steals from you.

It 'might' be a response to an agreement the U.S. has signed with Australia to operate F-22s and other aircraft out of Northern Australia during 2017 rather than any phone call with Taiwan. There are/will be (?) marines stationed in Australia as well.

Iran says it will not listen to any negotiations
and the terms are final.

That's laughable. At this point China could sell the debt that the US has to them for pennies on the dollar and basically ruin our economy. If the US declared it's debt to china "paid in full" the same thing would happen.
