EPA Just Declared War On Millions of Car Owners

Energy: The EPA’s proposal to increase the amount of ethanol that must be blended into gasoline is a trifecta of regulatory abuse. It will do nothing for the environment, it will do nothing for energy security, and it could wreck millions of car engines.

The decision stems from a misbegotten 2007 energy bill signed by President Bush that requires ever-increasing amounts of ethanol to be included in gasoline. Not an increasing percentage, but an actual amount.

The EPA’s proposal would require refineries to blend in almost 19 billion gallons of ethanol and other “biofuels” by 2017, which is 700,000 gallons more than they do now.

The EPA is proposing to raise the amount ethanol in gasoline to the point where engine damage can occur. The end game is to get you out of your car, and I guess they will destroy your engine to do it.

EPA needs to be shut-down. It is a government agency that can be used as a political tool too easily. The people that can't afford to buy a new vehicle will be the one's screwed in the end.

I'm at a loss of words at the moment except to say I am tired of wholly unqualified people planning the direction of this country. I'd rather have no planning than their planning.

Actually, my original comment does stand. I can't find any info that says we are going to be forced to buy any gas with increased ethanol. So if you don't want it, don't buy it!

Shouldn't the title be George W Bush declared war on millions of car owners?

So? Do you actually make the mistake of thinking that many of us really liked Bush all that much? He represents all that is wrong with the GOP establishment, but if you think Al Gore would have done this any differently ... or John Kerry for that matter. Please, I am waiting for you to attempt to make that case.

so for once it is Bush's fault. Do you thing the dirty hippies will give Bush some credit for this then?

Here’s an idea. Rather than requiring oil refiners to pump more of this dirty and expensive fuel into gasoline supplies, the federal government should abandon the ethanol requirement altogether.

Alcohol is dirty? hahahahaha Okay. So...uh, try drinking some ethanol, then take a swig of crude oil. Tell me which one you think is more 'dirty'.

When articles have such obvious bias in them they aren't worth the bits they are typed out on.

this is a "proposal"......not a factual thing that has been put into law.

If you are talking in terms of greenhouse gas produced in its production and what it does in terms of efficiency, then yes, ethanol is a dirty fuel.

Just look into it a little.

Your the one making claims. Its not my place to prove what your asserting. The epa is doing it's job is it not?

I just copied the title as written.

On topic, this isn't Bushes EPA anymore. According to This the EPA was authority to modify the amount of ethanol added. The least they could do is keep the percentage under where it hurts a person's car engine.

The EPA’s proposed increase is lower than the statutory volume imposed by Congress in 2007, but the amount is still too high, said Chet Thompson, president of the American Fuel & Petrochemicals Manufacturers.

In other words, no. You don't think that either Kerry or Gore would have done anything differently.

From what I have found after researching where and why we have ethanol gas it sounds like any increase would only effect older cars with carbs and also that the states still have the power to decide how much will be added.
Hardly a war on cars, if anything it is trying to make sure we use all of the corn that we subsidize.

If anything, I'd say the connection between Big Agri and Congress is the suspect issue.
But connecting those dots seems to make brains hurt.

Of course, but you know conservative rhetoric prevents them from complaining about Bush. Instead we get to blame the EPA and I'm sure Obama blame isn't far behind.

sounds like EPA approved for up to 15% ethanol to be used in fuel (suggested for cars 2001 and newer), and ethanol mostly damages smaller engines (lawn mowers, chain saw, etc.) wonder what that means for crotch rockets?

Agreed.

You could insert 95% of the government agencies where "EPA" exists in that comment.

Let's un-push the panic button. Get ready for a little math!

700,000 / 19,000,000,000 = 0.00368%

So the proposal is to increase the amount of ethanol used in fuels by just over 1/3000th of a percent. One of the stations near me just put in all new pumps, so they can sell E85 and E15, in addition to the up-to-10% Ethanol, 87, 89 & 93 Octane varieties. E15 is perfectly safe for passenger cars 2001 and newer. I'm guessing that E15 could probably account for that one three-thousandth of a percent increase by itself, and not a single person will fall to the Grand Conspiracy to Get Us Out of Our Cars via Engine Destruction, unless their car is older and they use the wrong fuel.
