Does anyone else have their own self imposed rule on ATS - mine being I can't post when tired.

Yep. I dont reply to a lot of things, even if I may want to. I look at the previous replies and who made them and how long theyve been a member (since what year and how many posts), and much of the time, I will yield to those more astute or senior members...and try to learn something.

And I have more fun watching the arguers than adding anything. Once in awhile I may join, but its more prudent sometimes to just keep quiet.

And I have one specific one. I will not discuss my experience or beliefs in astral projection, O.b.e.'s or lucid dreaming. And thats for a reason. I will not argue the virtues or negative beliefs to those who would hack apart such practices and beliefs...so I will help anyone who contacts me privately on these topics, but almost never on-site.

Good thread AND rules of thumb, obnoxious. Bumped.
Figure if I'm so far gone (for whatever reason) I can't
proofread what I'm about to post, I shouldn't stick it
out there.

Not having a lot of luck with that recently.. more of the
gone-ness due to a 55 or so year old fifth of VO (yeah it's
like A1, only it was that old).

Apologies to those I can't remember insulting; and --
every day in every way I'm turning my new digs and liver
both into a Royal Haeger combination ashtray/candy dish.
I'm misbegotton too old for this $#t..

I can get pretty bad anxiety sometimes... there have been a few times now where I go to reply to something, write and edit and delete and restructure sentences for a good hour, while constantly refreshing the thread to see if anyone else is going to say what I want to say... and then just not post it at all, regardless of if anyone else has brought it up.

So my personal rules:
1) if it takes longer than an hour it doesn't go up.
2) re-read at least twice before posting (and still end up having to edit it minutes later, woops)

And, -definitely- no posting within the first hour of waking up! My blurry eyes and fuzzy brain!

I've done that a few times but mess up and close the window with my reply.
I definitely understand the anxiety part. Mine is a social anxiety but that is stronger face to face.
I'm like that in the morning. I have to fully finish my coffee before attempting a reply. It's not easy since the time difference for everyone brings others late night posts as my morning posts.

I have a few self-imposed rules and relate to where you're coming from here.

1 - If I've nothing nice to say, I don't post it. This doesn't mean I'm all nice, it means I've written dozens of angry, sarcastic or aggressive posts and deleted them instead of posting.

2 - I don't post whilst drunk.

3 - Would break the T&Cs

p.s. send me a link and I'll 'correct' your double negative so you can sleep more easily

I've been lurking for many years, and recently decided to start posting, so your thread caught my interest. Though I must confess I'm not sure I can keep to some of the rules posted here by members which they follow.

-No posting while drunk
(Are we talking '3 beers drunk' ? Or "Where the hell am I" drunk ?)
-No posting when tired
(I usually have time to post at the end of the day, ergo tiredness shall be involved)
-No posting naked
(Really? That had to be a rule for some people?)
-No posting whilst depressed or angry
(I disagree. It could be close to therapeutic especially after a visit from the mother-in-law.)
JK

I'll add another rule just for the fun of it:

-No posting if you can't express your thoughts in a respectful and polite manner, ... and all the bacon is gone. ---"hangry"

These aren't really rules for me but rather guidelines that I go by when creating a post.

1. Opinions are not facts

2. Arguments are not discussions

3. Insults are not necessary

By keeping those three things in mind when creating a post, my time here on ATS has been mostly uneventful.

I wish more members had a code of conduct like the one you have.
From what I'm seeing, the fear of confrontation make people refrain from posting and contributing more. Not everyone has a thick skin and some take insult when there isn't one.

For me personally the no posting whilst drunk only applies to political/social types of threads, they can get really ugly fast and just end up like a verbal bar brawl that the poor old mods have to sort out.

There is nothing like the sense of dread that you get after a drunken night on ats and are sitting there in the morning with a hangover and a vague recollection of the nights "discussions" and seeing a little highlighted envelope that you just know is at least one or possibly several messages from the mods informing you that a post has been removed for a T&C violation. It's awful, I even made a thread about it a while ago.

Drinking and chatting in the off topic forums however is great fun, New years eve last year was particularly good fun although I did get a bit exited early and got so drunk that I passed out at around 6pm UK and missed the real fun.

Mrsnonspecific was at her parents that Christmas, I pretty much drank beer and lived on ATS for about a week.

Not that I can remember much about it though.

This thread I am sure was mainly alcohol fuelled and led to my avatar being what it is today... link

And on that note we are verging on violating said T&C's so I will say no more what we me with this beer in my hand and all on a Saturday evening...

Oh come on you were supposed to pass the bacon around, not eat it all.

Personally just one drink would make me ramble incoherently.
It probably wouldn't even be legible.
I'm sure others have a higher tolerance and probably down a case of beer or a bottle in the course of their nightly visit to wonderful ATS land.

The "only posting when completely naked" - well I didn't say my body was naked maybe I was referring to my naked mind.

I don't think you'd want to be on the receiving end of somebody posting while angry, it might be entertaining but only to the bystanders.

Common courtesy and manners would show respect if people had those qualities to begin with. It kind of reflects the way society is .....or isn't. Darn lost my train of thought.

Well thank you for partaking in this discussion.

I can understand having a specific topic that you won't talk about. Posting does leave you open for people to rip apart your views. No matter how well thought out and detailed one's personal accounts are it'll never replicate the experience they went through. The readers will never know what it's like.

I had to get over my issues about sharing paranormal type stuff. I do value others input especially when the thread is my own speculation. I do have one out now like that. I have to put a disclaimer stating we're not arguing if they exist.

You've been here longer than me, so I'll curtsey and take my place near the water cooler.

I have the typical rules for myself too,
no indepth writing at night when tired,
no posting at all if drunk,
and if I have become exasperated in a thread and proclaimed I am done with it, I don't allow myself to go back and look, in order to avoid getting tempted to jump back in!

It takes a certain level of self awareness to have restraint like that.
Forcing myself to take a break helps when I think I'm going to post something I'll regret.
I don't think people realize that some people do actually read a lot of threads but don't post at all because they see which way the thread went by a few pages in.

Thank you so much. But what's in a number really...how long one has been here or how many threads, posts, stars, flags or threads one has?

Everything has value. I just pick my battles...and try not to start any either. Doubters, naysayers and nonbelievers abound.

I don't have time in my life to try to convince anyone of anything...especially if they obviously want to deride me or some subject.

But I never fail to make myself available offline by p.m.

You know? Its said a wise person says little and speaks volumes...and a fool keeps talking and talking, achieving nothing.

Thanks for your reply! *(deep bow to your curtsy!) MS
