Well, when I'm at work and posting. . . people tend to avoid my office.

I wonder why

isn't it casual Friday?

My rule now is to avoid getting involved in politics. There's no solution, it gets heated and is no fun. Another rule is to be positive to my fellow members. After all, they're giving me knowledge and laughs for nothing.

I always have to respond of I see someone being mean or hurtful to another member.
I have to comment when I see blatant racism or homophobia or intolerance.

Other than that and my naked posting Friday rule, that's it.

When drinking i go on ultra patriotic diatribes, while meaningful to me they can come across to passionate and jumbled. So, I try not to post when drinking but always seem to find myself here regardless. My other rule before the Misses ran off, was to not post when she was around as she would make fun of me and get upset about the time not spent with her, ATS won , I am still here .

It's always casual Friday. I just avoid the staplers.

i should have a very big list - good ideas would be :

1 - dont post when drunk

2 - see post one

3 - just because i have concluded that a poster is a fooking idiot - its sometimes best not to tell them .

etc etc etc

but i seem to just go by the rule :

if i am concious - post and be dammed -

works for me

Only rule I have is to deny pseudoscience. Feels like an obligation at this point, though I'm not particularly motivated to do more than 2 line responses.

My self imposed rule had to be drilled into my thick skull over a long period of time...but once settled into my brain is now quite comfy. The rule is... No matter the discussion,no matter how passionate Iam about the topic,or it's personal relevance to me,or my knowledge of,or opinion on... It's just a message board on the internet. There are real people replying though sometimes they may act inhuman, and I will not adjust my posting standards to match theirs should they degrade in any way. I don't log in if I'm experiencing anger or depression so as not to affect the quality of my presence here, and the effect it may have on any given thread or member. Simple as that.

My main rule is that if drinking I only ever participate in off topic discussions. It's recent rule and one that is working out well as I am still here.

The other one is that I try to avoid political discussions as they just tend to end up as mud slinging.

Those are generally good rules to stick to.
The mud -slinging tends to take the thread way off topic. That's why I won't get involved.

Nice replies from everyone.

That's my rule, to not post when tired, but when I'm tired, I forget.

Also, I am still learning not to star a post until I've read the entire post. I can't say how many times I wanted to take it back, by the time I finished reading it.

I've learned the hard way to click on the name and get a feel for the over all personality of the poster, if they've pushed any of my buttons. Some people are just unhappy campers looking for a confrontation, and others are really neat posters who I caught on a bad day.

And mostly, obviously not practiced here, I keep telling myself to only post if I am contributing something of value.

Those are good points. Contributing something of value ... well I wish the trolls would see that one.
I star posts quickly but put more scrutiny before flagging.

Be sure to censor yourself as much as possible, otherwise you get banned.

Also use the proper code to communicate with the ones you want to communicate, like "those who leap forth"

I've already experienced a posting ban. Not fun.

Self imposed censorship conflicts with my personality. Restraint would be more likely. I try utilizing patience as much as possible. Time allows for reflection.
