We know what they did is wrong, the principal agreed and suspended them for 5 days.

I know it is a completely different time period but late 90s when I was in high school people got into full on fistfights and would be screaming much worse at each other the whole time and get a day or two of in-school suspension. Only repeat offenders would ever get an out-of school suspension let alone an expulsion.

Why do these girls, most with scholarships to good colleges, who may never have done anything wrong before this (if they were bad kids I would imagine them not going to good schools and having scholarships), deserve to have their lives RUINED by this? Thankfully it has not happened yet but it it does I would be more outraged.

I guess my main gripe with the whole story is just how quickly people jump for the harshest punishments possible and not for any alternative, classes, therapy, spend a period with the guidance councilor every day for a month. SOMETHING.

I'd rather get a 5 day suspension than any of the stuff you mentioned lol. They don't deserve any of that anyways.

Oh yeah, Go bad mouth your employer out some where, or on face book and see what happens. Of course you are allowed free speech. That doesn't mean there are no consequences.

Your First Amendment rights do not apply to private employers who can terminate you at will.

I think the principal handled this properly. What they did was tasteless, but they were just trying to get a laugh from the people they know. A 5 day suspension is strong enough to show them the severity of what they did(especially nowadays), without actually ruining their lives. It's a big shame, too, that people are wanting their lives ruined all because of this.

I'm very lucky to have grown up in the 90's, rather than today, because I did something similar when I was a stupid teen. When I was 16, I thought it would be funny to draw a stick figure KKK man hanging a stick figure black man. I got caught, I got in trouble, and I got detention for it.

Am I racist for doing it?? Nope, I'm a minority myself, and I also grew up in a racist small town. I've had all of the negative experiences related to it minus the cop harassment. Are my friends racist?? Nope, if they were, they wouldn't have been my friends. In fact, they're irish, and we used to joke that the irish were the white minorities, because in the past, nobody wanted them here either. lol

So why did I do it?? I thought it would be a funny shock laugh, and it was, my friends laughed. None of the teachers did, which is fair, and that's why I got in trouble.

Sometimes people do stupid stuff just to get a laugh. Yes, it's stupid, and yes, they should be disciplined. But I feel the worst offenders are the people crying out for more punishment. That reminds me a lot of sharia law. You do something they don't like, you should have your life ruined because of it. Sure, they're not killing them, but how is expelling them permanently like ReadLeader stated not just as bad?? That creates a huge hurdle for them to overcome, all because of a bad joke.

Seriously, grow up and get a thicker skin. As a minority, I'm so sick of the PC police regarding racism.

This kid I went to school with thought it would be a good idea to do his book report on Mein Kampf and read selected passages in an affectated German accent while holding a black comb under his nose to make it look like he had a moustache. Even the teacher laughed.

I don't know if any more punishment is needed..Im sure they are going to be living the consequences, I do wonder how f'n stupid are these "good girls"..big fail somewhere and a bit disingenuous to suggest they wouldn't know this was not cool. Maybe a private pic gone further than expected but there are repercussions in life for dumb or hurtful things we say or do..and put on film.

Lol no I'm using the fact that 90% of people I know are racist. Like normal white suburban society thinks this is funny.

Seriously? 90% of "normal white suburban society" thinks this is funny? How did you come up with that figure?

Fact is, no, it's not funny, and NO, 90% of white suburban society does NOT think this is funny.

Perhaps you're the racist here.

I must be part of the humorless 10% because I do not find anything comical about the photo.

Only it didn't spell out anything.
Wow, has the PC crowd grown rabid for blood or what?
Kids do all sorts of stupid and strange things, this doesn't even qualify as either to me.
I don't know how words can be so dangerous, especially in single form.
If the ideal is to "protect the vulnerable" in society how does expelling these girls help their goals?
Amazing all the names minorities are allowed to call others but it seems whites have half a dictionaries worth of "hurtful" slurs.
Yes, I'm a believer in freedom of speech even if people get their feelings hurt.
It's far better than the alternative of never knowing when something you say might ruin your life.

Eh.

Neither funny, nor earth-shattering. It's the epitome of American pearl-clutching today, "Some kids the bulk of the country does not know nor will ever run across did something stupid! Story at 11!"

Like kids country-wide never did anything stupid in previous decades < rolls eyes > Do I care these girls did something thoughtless? No. Do I care that some people with equally offensively thin skin got offended themselves? No. I suggest doing something to get over the butthurtitis.

I'm racist, so is 90% of my community. This isn't hard to follow. This picture is like the south park where the guys on wheel of fortune and the question is people who annoy you and he guesses naggers it's got millions of views for some reason.

Lol, you're probably serious too. All that fuss and no racial slur was even on the shirt spelling. Two letters, which nobody even knows which ones belong there, are blanked out and the nation goes into offended mode.

Well, at least they didn't have a confederate flag. They'd be eligible for the death penalty then.

I think it's terrible, all the people who were tragically and critically offended by this. I'm sure visits to the ER and "comfort centers" are at their max right now.

Harvard probably shut down testing and classes for two weeks while the students mourn as well...

Well, you get some props for admitting it. There are plenty of racists here that hide behind transparent BS walls of PC rhetoric and syntax.
Those girls should have done the same and saved themselves the heat.

I don't think those girls should be suspended or lose their scholarships. But a year of community service at an inner city old folks home might be appropriate.

Some of those girls are going to get their ass beat at school anyway. Most of them will probably transfer to a nice private school but it won't matter because this dumb ass stunt will follow them for a long time. The brought the heat down on themselves.

You cant take action on these girls outside of school without violating their constitutional rights.

Did they bad mouth their employer? I must have missed that part, can you link me to it?

Let's be honest. Those girls are white and they had their shirts in a pattern that MIGHT be a racial slur. Those two asterisks could mean anything. However, in the mind of a racist, those are two "G"s. 200 megatons of butthurt over nothing. Gotta love the 2010's.

That was an illustration regarding free speech not directed at the girls.

Fasho... You grew up and went through High School in the same era as me. Had this been between 94 and 97 when I was in school, the girls would have been approached by those who were offended and then anybody (guys) wanting to defend the girls from the dudes in their faces would have stepped up and everything would have been settled. Not now, nah, thanks to the internet, everybody has to have their own say in what should happen. I'm with you, people need to grow up and get some thick skin. This shart is ridiculous.

Minus the mustache part, that sounds like the kid from American History X.
