An to put it in an even older context; it s based on a pre-christian tradition, called Saturnalia:
According to wikipedia:

"Saturnalia was an ancient Roman festival in honour of the deity Saturn, held on 17 December of the Julian calendar and later expanded with festivities through to 23 December. The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum, and a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying, and a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted, and masters provided table service for their slaves.[1] The poet Catullus called it "the best of days".[2]"

"Saturnalia is the best-known of several festivals in the Greco-Roman world characterized by role reversals and behavioral license.[19] Slaves were treated to a banquet of the kind usually enjoyed by their masters. Ancient sources differ on the circumstances: some suggest that master and slave dined together,[20] while others indicate that the slaves feasted first, or that the masters actually served the food. The practice might have varied over time,[21] and in any case slaves would still have prepared the meal.[citation needed]

Saturnalian license also permitted slaves to enjoy a pretense of disrespect for their masters, and exempted them from punishment. It was a time for free speech: the Augustan poet Horace calls it "December liberty".[22] In two satires set during the Saturnalia, Horace has a slave offer sharp criticism to his master.[23] Everyone knew, however, that the leveling of the social hierarchy was temporary and had limits; no social norms were ultimately threatened, because the holiday would end.[24]".

BTW, Saturnalia was later renamed to "Christmas"

If guns are ban in Germany how these people got their hands on them? are you sure this is legit video?

I will hate to see this thread been scratched.

This is how liberals actually think.

"Guns are bad! Ban all guns!"
*liberals ban guns*
*criminal psychopath guns down dozens of innocent people with an ak47*
"How did this happen? We banned all guns!*

The only way to protect a populace against mass shootings is to arm them. Banning guns takes guns away from law-abiding citizens. It does not and never will take guns away from criminals. As we can see with the drug trade - if you make something illegal that is in high demand, it will create black markets that cater to that demand.

Also please note that nearly all of the mass shootings we see on TV are in gun-free zones. If you ban guns from schools and theaters do you know what happens? The criminals know that these are the places to go to shoot people because no one else will have a gun and be able to defend themselves.

Want to stop school shootings? Stand your ground laws and let teachers CCW to work.

I guess they don't care where the bullets land or if anyone gets killed. Just being filmed with weapons doesn't seem to bother them either.

I am sorry but I do agree with this...either try to make them change their views and stupid religion or eradicate them for the better of mankind.

Disgusting propaganda this topic.

2 guns the entire video, two tiny little pistols - and a bunch of fireworks and girls screaming because they are pretending to be scared of fireworks - and this is supposed to incite the anger and fear you lot are displaying?

I say it again, DISGUSTING PROPAGANDA.

By the way guns are not illegal in Germany, they are restricted, just like here in the U.S.

Well I guess I will have to come to terms that banning guns doesn't equal to having them disappear, but as usual criminals and those that should never have access to them will always get them after all.

So what does that make these imigrants that they welcomed so warmly?

I guess you don't know much about bullets.

Or maybe you didn't watch the whole *fogy* and *scary flashing lights themed* video. The video where the 2 tiny little small caliber pistols are aimed directly into the air, at angles that when bullets return back to land - would be harmless.

My link to same video with comments

Its the people in charge who need to wake up, the guy it the street already knows....

So a small bullet, travelling at terminal velocity is harmless? yes, just so long as it does not hit anyone.

Wow this thread really took off while I was sleeping and at work!!

I have asked a moderator to revise the thread title because I don't wish to deceive anyone, and when I created this topic I was genuinely under the impression these were real pistols. I even wrote in one of my posts after the edit window closed that most likely they were movie pistols and apparently this is pretty common at NYE in this part of Berlin.

I would honestly understand if this needs to be putin the HOAX bin, but svetlana has made excellent contributions to this thread to try and clear up misconceptions caused by this thread, so I can only hope that people read the whole thread and come to their own conclusions.

I do still think this behavior is unacceptable in a massive city and qualifies as terrorizing people.

It's not propaganda anything. It was my personal opinion and ATS is exactly that, a place where people discuss opinions. The video is not fake, what you see really happened, and I even wrote in the thread that apparently these are movie pistols or signal pistols, not real guns as I originally thought.

In fact I wanted to edit my original post but the edit time window was closed.

Furthermore. NO, NOT "JUST LIKE HERE IN THE US"

A normal citizen in Germany cannot buy a handgun for self defense, can only buy a target handgun after a FULL YEAR of practice shooting and attendance every month, and can not buy ANYTHING like what we can in the US.

Good or bad, I'm not sure, but it's a joke from you to try and compare German and US gun laws. Completely disingenuous.

Just for the sake of science...

The general consensus is that a bullet fired straight up—at precisely 90 degrees to the horizontal—is unlikely to kill a healthy adult when it returns to Earth. That's because, on the way down, air resistance prevents the bullet from returning to its initial velocity. The bullet would deliver a painful wallop but could only have a chance of killing you with a direct hit to the eye, ear, or mouth.

www.slate.com...

The important angle is roughly 45 degrees

That said, bullets fired at an upward angle of 45 degrees or less can be far more lethal, since they're likely to hit someone on the ground while traveling at a much greater speed. In this case, gravity isn't directly opposing the bullet's motion, so the projectile stays at a higher velocity throughout its flight path. It's also more likely to maintain its initial, aerodynamically favorable orientation. Bullets fired vertically tend to fall nose-up or sideways, which creates a lot of drag.

Heck it is no where near as bad as the early 90's.

Not too sure why you would make such a claim.

According to reports gun crimes in Britain increased for years after the gun ban.

Culture of violence: Gun crime goes up by 89% in a decade

By James Slack for the Daily Mail
Updated: 03:42 EST, 27 October 2009

Gun crime has almost doubled since Labour came to power as a culture of extreme gang violence has taken hold.

The latest Government figures show that the total number of firearm offences in England and Wales has increased from 5,209 in 1998/99 to 9,865 last year - a rise of 89 per cent.

In some parts of the country, the number of offences has increased more than five-fold.

In eighteen police areas, gun crime at least doubled.

The statistic will fuel fears that the police are struggling to contain gang-related violence, in which the carrying of a firearm has become increasingly common place.

Last week, police in London revealed they had begun carrying out armed patrols on some streets.

The move means officers armed with sub-machine guns are engaged in routine policing for the first time.

You would have been more correct to have said "gun crimes became worse for years in the UK AFTER the gun ban".

It is still stupid to point fireworks at other people as it is very dangerous. But you are trying to claim that this is the same as using what appear to be handguns and shooting them.

You can see in the video that many of these German Immigrants, they were speaking in German, were cocking the pistols, and in a few occasions it is clear that at least some of the pistols were clearing the chamber of a spent round. You can even see at least one person who had his pistol jam, and he had to cock it to be able to keep on shooting. Not everyone had one, but there were several people using them.

How the hell does this happen without a response from more heavily armed police officers?

Europe is insane in its ways. Those were European kids and families running while dodging rockets and GUN FIRE! I did notice the mother with a stroller running in fear while they laughed as rockets exploded around her.

If that doesnt make your blood boil or turn ice cold, what ever, then you should just get used to it.

Guns going off in a heavily populated metropolitan city in the 21st century. Think about that.
