Transgender woman found dead in all-male prison

A 21 year old transgender woman has been found dead in Armley, a category B men’s prison in Leeds.

"She had been born male but identified as a woman from her mid-teens. She asked the judge presiding over the case to send her to New Hall women’s prison near Wakefield, but her request was denied."

"Vicky Thompson, 21, told friends she would kill herself if sent to Armley prison in Leeds, where she was pronounced dead."

Well this is not very compassionate is it? Now she is dead. Did she deserve a death sentence for such a minor offence? I think NOT.

I hope the law can finally be changed after this so her death is not totally in vain. There is obviously a huge social problem here that needs to be addressed. Only the other week there was a case where a transgender woman called Tara was spared the humiliation of male prison yet Vicky seems to have gone under the radar.

This Twitter comment quoted in the source says it all for me,

"In the midst of Transgender Awareness Week, Vicky Thompson is found dead in a men's prison."

RIP Vicky.

(I take an interest in these matters because I had a transgender friend called Daphne many years back. She was going through the "change" and found it too much and killed herself.)

Very sad, Vicky passed on Friday the 13th, which was during the Transgender Awareness week too (2nd-15th). For her to contemplate and proceeded with suicide meant she must have felt very unsafe and vulnerable in there.

The Dept of Justice needs to seriously reevaluate the gender identity clause which lead to Vicky being sent to the all-male prison because it is highly likely she would still be alive if she went to a female prison.

Transgender Awareness Week, which is typically observed the first two full weeks of November, a two week long celebration generally leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance (aka TDOR) usually on the Friday just before Thanksgiving, when transgender advocates raise awareness of the transgender community through education and advocacy activities

So when you go to prison, you go in as the gender you were assigned at birth.... What is the problem here? Sorry the laws are just fine. Prison is not a vacation and you are not a special snowflake when you are there.

a reply to: Revolution9 some people are so insensitive, why would you put any human through this? Knowing the outcome was probably going to end in a tragic death? I hope those who made the decision to send her there are satisfied with the predictable outcome.

Yes, absolutely spot on. That is the sentence of death the Judge is giving if they make such a decision.

The person chose death. It was an immature "if you do it I will kill myself" threat.

This is bloody awful.

I believe that the government failed in a duty of care here, that the justice system had ample forewarning to prevent this death, and did nothing, absolutely nothing to prevent it. I find myself wondering how, with equality law so broad and powerful as we have in this country, it can ever have come to pass that this woman was placed in a men's prison, regardless of what equipment she had in her undergarments at the time of her incarceration.

This is possibly the most staggering case of malicious misgendering I have ever come across, and that it was committed by a government department smacks of a double standard. If the man in the street were to mistreat, or even be ACCUSED of mistreating a person because of their transgender status, it would be considered a hate crime, a transphobic incident. But when government does it, it is a matter of regulation? I do not consider their reasoning acceptable, nor do I believe that it conforms to the law.

This is a matter of institutional intolerance, and must be addressed post haste. This must never happen again.

I could produce a few fake tears for this he/she...but I choose to care about things that actually effect my life....and since im not gay and dont dress like a woman this story mean zero to me.

Shouldn't the judge ask for a psychiatric evaluation if she threatened to suicide?
I guess the judge just wanted to make a point which unfortunately costed this troubled soul her life.
Is a shame, nobody should die like that.

A life is lost here regardless of what gender they identified with and their death is being used to push an agenda on a message board.

As a conservative myself, I find that really sad and really wrong.

He/She did not get a death sentence, he/she killed herself.

If you dont like it inprison then dont do anything that lands you a year in it in the first place. Then , if you get a 2 year suspension for it and you still dont want to go to prison dont breach it. And if your passport and birth certificate still says that you are a man , wich means he did not have his genitals doctored and was medically a man then yeah you will automaticly be asigned to a male prison.

The prison system does not cater for SWJ's and it never should because it would make for a tremendous mess.
Instead of acting like a entitled snowflake and threaten to kill himself and then actually sentence himself to death he could have made a case about it like "tara hudson" did,and with sucsess.

Doesnt look like he is treated much better by the woman in that prison.



One interesting thing though is that i cannot find anywhere what the 24 month sentence was for. Nobody seems to write about that anywhere.
