think we tried something like this with monrovia/liberia ,monroe gave them their own country in africa and they named it after him not sure how it worked out

en.wikipedia.org... these guys seemed to have tried it at least once but not on a state level.

i would say if you tried to do that today you would be hit with cries of segregation etc or have it looked on like an excuse to get them all in one place to get rid of them or something else

Why, we're American. Giving black folks a piece of this country would be an insult. Black folks already are the majority in Mississippi to the tune of around 60%, so we got that already.

To answer your question, no.

I'm black and no way in hell I'd want some all black state. Heck no. Despite all the BS about micro aggression, institutional racism, and all the nonsense you hear from pseudo intellectual pro-blacks, most know there is no better place to live than America.

That's purely subjective! And your personal opinion not truth or a fact.

The biggest problem is that even if something like that were offered, it would fail massively. Most of the people who support separation tend to follow liberal ideology and what would happen is economic collapse followed by tyranny.

Liberals... what?! That is all kinds of wrong.

Come on now. One of you must be just pretending, or is a want-a-be.

You both can't be Black. You don't seem to agree.

Tongue in cheek guys. Just joking around.

Its actually 38% (second only to the District of Columbia at 51%) which is almost 3 times the national average. Mississippi is at the top of quite a few "not so desirable" lists, so I certainly hope you're not bragging.

I'm curious as to whether or not this is even something African Americans would be interested in.

You're own little piece of America. You're own country to run however you see fit.

Not some BS Israel deal where something like 15% of the population got 50% of the land, but a fair 13%.

What would you say to such an offer?

how about giving right-wing Christians their own little piece of America...maybe Alabama and Georgia combined. that way they can own slaves, repeal the ACA, repeal voting rights, cut taxes down to the bone, repeal all government social services, repeal all business regulations, Christian schools only, bibles in every school desk, no inter-racial marriage, no gay marriage...etc.

Dumber than my idea of the U.S. and Russia teaming up to get the chemical weapons out of Syria?

Yes.

You aren't prone to dumb ideas. And we all have them. I once debated with someone that Cassius Clay should give up his world championship when he changed his name to Muhammed Ali. I was wrong, and it was a dumb idea.

1. Which part do you give them?
2. What do you do with the people who are already there who do not belong suddenly?
3. How do you address the issues of transfer of wealth from those are there to those who will suddenly be there (i.e. do you displace a farmer into a Section 8 housing complex with no just compensation?)
4. What do you do then about other groups with prior claims to the same ground? (Native Americans, Mestizos, etc.)

What better country is there for black Americans? What country offers the same level of freedoms and opportunity for black Americans?

Blacks vote to the tune of 95% for Democrats. Look at any major city. You will see black police chiefs, black school boards, black city councils, black mayors, black attorney generals, majority black neighborhoods... yet where is this supposed black utopia? In these same cities you see 3/4's of the kids born out of wedlock, failing schools, rampant crime and violence, etc.

For all intents and purposes, most of the areas are black statehoods. If black folks can't pull it together now, what makes you think we'd be able to make a thriving state? The same backward policies, corruption, etc that you see in cities like Baltimore, Detroit, et al won't just disappear because some Utopian black state is created.

I have two words that make that a bad idea. The bloods and the crypts. I t would be non stop civil war for control.

It's not about whether it's a good or bad idea.

I think it's a bad idea, but I think sometimes the only way to prove to some people that what they think they want is neither workable nor a good idea is to let them have it in full measure.

There are a lot of blacks who think if only they could get rid of The Man, they would suddenly live in a prosperous, Utopian society because they are being kept down. This would give them the chance to prove that out.

If it weren't for the monstrous impracticalities of it, I would be tempted to let them try it. Who knows? Maybe they are right, but I think things would get very, very ugly before they would get better.

How would you figure out who would go into this little separate piece of America? What about mixed race people?
What other ethnic groups might want their own piece of land?

Strange proposition. ...

Like it or not, many African Americans are still pissed off about slavery and feel they are owed reparations. Many of them are not happy here. They feel they are being targeted by the police and that they are victims of institutionalized racism.

I'm simply gauging public opinion on a possible solution that I haven't heard suggested before.

Nice post!!!

Haha but you can't do that... It would contradict the opinions of people here and everywhere of how palestinians should be entitled to a state in Israel. That would open Pandora's box. And of course... you're racist, probably because you have the word "black" in the sentence.

That is one hell of a deep thought. It has so many sub points without you even trying.

Still, you pose a very good question.

Ya know, I've heard something similar to this in another way that would be considered racist. I guess it all depends on how your form the question, isn't it?

And of course, you brought up the Palestinians. You know that no matter where the blacks were settled, if their own state wasn't a rousing success, they would pretty soon blame the rest of the country for it for some reason or other.

At this point, I think this is a problem that will never go away.

The Op is asking that would it not be good to allow or have one state that was only to Americans of African descent living here. And here is a few points that should be considered:

This is not a new idea, though the size and scope is larger, but it has been tried before. In the past, long before the civil rights era, there were attempts to keep groups of Americans of African descent separate from the rest of society, even encourage them to develop and start their own cities and towns and businesses. From all accounts they were successful, very successful, however at that time frame jealousy and fear grew and such were either discouraged or even outright stopped by any and all means necessary. One could look at say Rosewood, and the Rosewood massacre as an example of why such failed. Then there was the Tulsa incident, where the all African American community of Greenwood, was very prosperous and then the result of a group of white people attacked and it was destroyed and such was not done ever again.

And the list goes on, where there are those that would try, and they did not fail from a lack of support but from the deliberate attacking of different means to make it fail.
And it would not work today, cause now one is suggesting putting them in their own state, kind of sounds like one is asking for them to be on a reservation. Then there is the fact that how does one determine what parts would be acceptable to such and what of the people who live there or who own property, how does one go and ask them to leave and what kind of fair compensation could be offered for them to move or leave? And in the case of the government, it usually means that they would give the least amount and then there would be the court battles and fighting, as both sides would feel that they were being unjustly targeted and focused on.

And lets say for arguments sake it happened, what happens if it failed, or those there decided that they wanted to live else where then what?

Nicodemus did pretty well and as far as I know was never attacked, and I think it's still heavily black today but very tiny.

But you also have to consider that the requirements for setting up and maintaining a successful settlement are very different today than they were then. Most of the blacks who came off of the plantations had a decent idea of how to farm. How many of today's blacks have a decent idea of the kinds of job skills that would be needed to maintain a complex modern society?

Because I'm assuming that moving to this new place would be voluntary.

The more I think about this, the more it irks me. Your idea is completely segregationist and it took our country decades to overcome that nightmare, and here you are in the 21st century suggesting we bring it back. UGH.

Why African Americans? They are AMERICANS just like I am, and I don't want to be off in some little segregated "spot" by myself and I'm sure they don't either.

Good lord.

Then maybe the black female politician in New York who suggested separating public housing by "culture" because to many Asian immigrants were taking it should also offend you?

I'm yet to come across any black person that wants 'a little piece of America' to themselves. But, let's entertain this notion that there are some who want their own nation in american and that they do get their own nation for them only.... what about the many african americans that are just fine with living and mixing among others? Will they be removed by force into this little state created for them?

What's the percentage threshold of african americans to justify they have their own nation? 60% 70%?

Do you realize now how much a farce your OP is given the above?
