I think it is probable that a combination of the two is more likely than one or another, in terms of a cause for the trend thats been seen since the change.

However, what you have to remember is that criminals are not all part of some underground cartel. They cannot always afford to simply move on elsewhere, up sticks and move somewhere with harsher gun controls, where they are less likely to get ventilated as a result of their criminal enterprises.

Although it may well be the case, that criminals may not give up all criminal activity when faced with an armed population, they are certainly prone to thinking twice when they know they could be shot dead on the spot for trying to commit an armed robbery, or a street mugging, or a home invasion, or other offence involving use of force or violence against citizens.

Oh, and just because you seem extra-ignorant on this topic, Russia has fairly restrictive firearms laws so if they are chasing people to other countries it is not because the citizens are well armed.

Just reading the posts here , it is almost a question of individual rights which should be the fundamentals in which all governments are based. I should have the right to free speech . I should have the means to provide. And , I should have the means to protect my family and my property among others. With that being said , a lot of firearms purchased in this country are not necessarily to defend oneself (although we all do want to) or perform violent activities . There are also hunting and recreational activities , also as collectors or hobbyists. Yes , no matter what you have heard ,we still do believe that most people want to live their lives normally and are good people. Yes , it is frequently on our news that you do hear about a shooting , etc . But , you never hear the good stories of how criminals and violent crimes were headed off by a citizen with a weapon. I have always wondered why that was. I guess it does not fit some people's or group's agendas. If you live in a country that does not allow ownership of firearms or you choose not to, that is your choice not mine. Stop trying to make me be like you .I do not have time to run your life , all my time is taken up by mine. There is so much more to say about this , but I am already weary of the topic.

I meant that a nation that is so dependent on guns for it's total safety will become p*ssies. Now if your elderly, sick ..etc..valid reason.

If your able bodied just don't depend on your gun for protection.
