Fair point, but the rest of Europe seems to be able to forget Nazis and German link and the French and Napolean link (except some neanderthals) so why cant the bears?

I have heard jet lag can take its toll but considering some Russian media outlets reported on the meeting last week that he is supposedly to have this week it makes one wonder just how much lag time travel can create.

You are historically correct. I think in a lot of Russian peoples eyes this is seen as stability. Choice in consumer goods and a western style economy represents uncertainly and the humiliation associated with the fall of the Soviet Union.

That's why I think Putin is out of touch when he behaves like its the 1980's and he is head of the USSR and not the Russian federation. Its why I was wondering if maybe his advisors are finally seeing the road he is on and started looking for an exit ramp.

None of the industrialists who make up the oligarchy would profit from such a course of action. Russia and the EU are competing for the bargain basement priced Labor that countries like the Ukraine provide. The Russians only know how to use force, propaganda and subversion. How to win hearts and minds and nation building isn't a part of there play book.

if they tried to resign en mass I could see them smiling for muzzle flashes.

That being the case is there anyway a Civil War can be avoided?
