WakeUpBeer
As you said, the big bang was an explosion of light from emptiness.

It wasn't, actually.

The Big Bang was lightless.

And it stayed that way for 400 million years, until something called 'reionization' occurred and turned the lights on.

The account of Creation in Genesis bears not the faintest resemblance to the origins of the universe in the Big Bang.

By saying that the genealogies of the bible is an interpretation means we cannot take the bible as an accurate reference, as it clearly shows the decendants starting from Adam and a near accurate account of how long each generation lived. Alot of research has been done on this and most scholars agree it's between 6000-6500 years old. It's the point most Christians wish to ignore as it highlights how poor the bible is. Remember you can't pick or choose what elements of the bible you want.

Interesting. Thanks very much for that.

I guess I had never really thought about it beyond some layman "it's an expansion" explanation. I don't know why I typed explosion of light now that I think about it. Not that I would have known what to type had the "let there be light" theme wasn't in my head. Showing my ignorance on the matter I suppose. Thank you for pointing it out to me.

Interesting initial post. Clearly there is no link what so ever, if anything you have further highlighted the short comings of creationism, but adleast it makes for good debate.

With regards to atheists on this site, I strongly suggest taking a more agnostic approach to life. To believe in a "religious" god is ultimately crazy because of the purpose it serves, but to deny there is any possibility of a "creator" of the universe is ignorant. There is a mathematical design to life on earth and in the universe. Whether it's randomness or a design is for you to decide. But by saying you are "religious" or "atheist" automatically promotes ignorance and hinders the individuals chances of finding the latest relative truths

Interesting, I did not know that about Sam Harris.

Yeah most just know about his views on anti-theism. He's talked about this at length in later books and even in debates/lectures to an extent. Actually I believe there is a dedicated lecture on Youtube on his thoughts towards meditation and mystical experience. Prior to his fame as one of the 'Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' he was majoring in philosophy and practicing meditation and mindfulness. Now he's got a Ph.D. in neuroscience and he's still a firm advocate of them. Adds to the credulity, at least for me.

In the past when I've tried things like meditation, or inducing an out of body experience, I either fall asleep or it doesn't work. It's almost impossible for me to clear my mind so I've given up.

The mystical experience didn't happen until around one year of meditating every year for an hour.

I know this because I used a music track specifically for meditation, and that track was an hour in length. I would recommend that. I think there is some Pavlovian condition at play as well. Body and mind recognize the stimulus and the dogs start to drool. I would use the track and put my focus all on my breath. Long full controlled breaths. Sitting, but not necessarily in Lotus Position. I never fell asleep with this approach.

I had no intention of meditating for any purpose initially actually. Outside of just wanting to try it so I could write it off my list. No underlying belief or expectations. I found it very relaxing and refreshing so I kept it up every day after work. The day it happened I still had no expectations other than the knowledge it was relaxing. I hadn't done anything differently. Same music track. Same focus on breath. Same house. Same hour of the day. I experienced something akin to what's called Nirvāṇa by the Eastern mystics. I believe I experienced enlightenment for the duration of that experience. And it terrified me. I have not meditated since.

My ego is apparently stronger than whatever is inside me that allowed me to be free of it.

what about "the waters" everyone skips over this...what waters?

I posted a few different times in various threads that 'waters of the deep' was code for our present day concepts which include Quantum Reality-Nature-Mechanics and the quality of reality we term Dark Energy & Dark Matter

beings from another dimension (AKA: Heaven) would be able to see or witness such things as the much anticipated Super-Wave which explodes from the black hole at the center of the milky way galaxy some 26,000 years before we on planet earth experience that majestic Gamma-Ray burst in our near future

Yet even that verse can have several different interpretations attached to it. Like I said, God severely limited himself when he put himself into a book and used words and language to reveal himself. Why such a fallible system? Surely he could have done better. I mean, look at all the holy wars he KNEW would happen over the book he KNEW would be misinterpreted. He thought this would be the best and most efficient way? Sounds very human-like to me.

Well put. Maybe he intended these wars to satisfy his ego or just use it as a mechanism for population control, if he actually existed

You know you are wrong, I sourced it, you can't dispute it, you simply are more interested in ignorant hatred than truth. I really don't care if you believe what the Bible says, I simply do not understand the need yourself and others have to lie to propagate your hatred.

So well said!

The ancient term for Rhinoceros is, survey said Unicorn.

Jerks babies toy away.

You know Jesus said to a crowd that was following him, "“ If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. "

Replaces old toy with new, more appropriate toy.

Is that all that's bothering you?
I think you can get an entire Bible read on compact disc if
you perfer.

That's certainly possible but without solid evidence to support that claim isn't that character assassination?

That's correct. It will not. Only ignorant people who prefer to not be educated on the subject are confused. I posted a source already, it's not MY opinion, it's proven fact. The Bible was not written in English, the original texts contain no mention of Unicorns. The King James version uses the English word Unicorn because the animal named in the original texts are extinct. King James is one of the worst translations, and it's the only one who uses that word.

At the time English travelers were reporting sightings of actual one horned antelopes, which is why the KJ version uses it possibly. It's shoddy translation work, because the beast in the Bible is clearly oxen, not equine/antelope.

This is a prime reason why the people who interpret the bible as absolute infallible truth are completely deluded. There are so many words that don't translate exactly to English, and many words that have multiple meanings. In reality it was written in an old primitive language, and people who claim their version is the right one, are just guessing and 99% of people do not fluently understand Hebrew or Latin, so looking for a literal interpretation is beyond silly.

But anyway, I do feel it's silly to criticize people or call them ignorant, when the whole damn thing is hypothetical to begin with. I mean the word unicorn is used in the scriptures, so that doesn't make folks who quote that ignorant. It means the folks who wrote the translation were ignorant. If that's the case, then what does that say about the rest of it?

It's silly if you do not inform them of the truth first. Once they have been informed, and continue to lie, they are ignorant, and should be criticized by everyone regardless of their beliefs.

As to the people who wrote it being ignorant, yes, they did have some ignorance. The difference being there was no one available to shine a light on that ignorance. There is today. As to the rest of your sentiment the other poster already made that argument, and I responded to it. This was my response.

Want to know what was not lost in translation?
Jhn 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Maybe God wants us to focus on what matters, not Unicorns.

no its all in genesis go ask any physics major they are finally coming around lol .............
physics says all things are held together by sound and with sound you can change salt into granite
quarts into organic matter but we are all held together by a sound frequency
In the beginning was the word (sound) and the word was with god and the word was god (god is the frequency sound that holds us all together.

And read genesis for yourself before making such a bold statement there is more mystery and answers to whats going on in the world right now than you think in genesis

In the beginning the universe was nothing void not even empty space ANd god said (again sound) let there be light
And Bang there was not only light but everything it does say this if you read it for yourself
And the best in their field all the way backi to einstien say the universe is finite wich means it has an end and the best in the physics fie;ld will tell you that as far as they can tell nothing has any begininng the lighter in you hand has atoms that make up atoms that make up atoms ect.... so far that for all purposes they dont know why its held together but (sound)
And the universe has an end in theory but we cant see it lol or it has no end

Well here is your answer I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA THE BEGINNING AND THE ENDING OF EVERYTHING.

IN THE LAWS OF PHYSICS THAT MAKES SENSE PERFECT SENSE AND NOTHING BUT GOD CAN MAKE THAT CLAIM
And if there is a beginning or end to ANYTHING we havnt found it .

Now the Higgs Boson partical they thought they found the partical that makes up the particals of an atom and instead of finding like a double helix code they were hoping for they found 1s and os thats right binary in the physics world it was like expecting an answer finally but no you get a giant book of more ? ..............

Any way read that book for yourself there is really neat stuff in there not just im your god obey or else but some genuine mysteries aliens nephlim angels giants pyramids temples floods fireballs .....hell yea
