So how much is it to rent a gun and shoot them in US gun ranges?.
Do they charge by the bullet? or by which gun you choose to shoot? can you shoot loads of guns? how long and how many bullets do you go through?.
Attempting to work out how much I need to save up for my USA trip this year and I am going to have a go.
Cheers
.

The local range by me charges by the hour for using one of the ports which can be $20+ depending on the time. They also have rentals from small caliber handguns up to large caliber semi-automatic rifles. These vary from $10-30 an hour.

Ammunition is extra and can be anywhere from $10 for a box of 50 to $30 dollars or more for larger calibers.

Where in the States are you going to be?

Some charge by the hour, some just charge a flat rental fee based on the gun. The one that I used to visit charged a flat range fee, rental fee for the gun, and ammunition charges. You buy ammunition by the box, so that will depend on what current costs are for that caliber. It's all going to depend on where you are.

One of the ranges by me has what they call a 10 for $10 deal, it includes your choice of rental gun, ear protection, eye protection, and 10 rounds of ammo. If you wish to shoot more than 10 rounds you have to purchase more ammo and pay for lane time which is $8/half hour.

Many people use this 10 for $10 to decide if they like a certain model they are interested in, the range has between 50 and 100 different popular models to choose from.

If you're going to be in the Las Vegas area there are ranges there you can rent full autos to shoot. No idea what it costs, but I bet it isn't cheap. I'm sure a quick google search would turn up something.

Come to think of it, you can do just about anything you want in Vegas lol

Sounds like a well prepared plan. How do you intend to find him?

Iam in semi contact (email) with his mother but she doesn't want him to know his step dad isn't his real dad.
I have suggested to her that I come over and just say Iam an old school pal of hers I just want to see the young chap.
I didn't even know he existed until he was around 10.

1/2 hour at the indoor range near us ... $50.
That includes the gun rental, bullets and target.
You can have your choice of guns that the range has to rent.
If you pick something like an AR15 they'll ask what experience you have.
Have you shot guns before? If not, try to go with someone.
Start with something like a 9 Mil.

does a potatoe gun count lol...

Nah I have shot shotguns a few times and when I was a kid I was lucky enough to have a go of a sniper rifle (no idea which) at an army range.
I was a bab hand at it also hit centre first shot and it appeared I missed with the rest but when checked the next 5 went through the same hole...the army guy was gobsmacked lol.

I pay $20 for a stall and get access all day so if I go shoot at lunch I can return after work and resume practicing. You have good info from other posters on the costs for gun rental and ammo. I just wanted to suggest that shooting handguns is more exciting and fun IMHO
so make sure you rent some form of semi auto pistol.
Might I be so bold as to ask for a follow up post about your experience?
have fun, be safe
