To be quite honest, it is sexist genre... big time but it just doesn't bother me. It's always been like books or movies to me, if it draws you in then cool... have fun. Playing a video game where I have to play a boy and rescue a girl doesn't appeal to me (well to be fair, outside of Mario cuz that's what there was when I was a kid) so I won't play them. Video games where I can play a female, be sexy and kick ass does appeal to me, so I buy them and play those.

My point was that the reactionary, anti-feminists gamergate supporters really need to realize that these women are only expressing opinion (one I can't disagree with for the most part) and that they have the right to do so as much as any dude has the right to murder, rape, beat prostitutes in GTA.

Have the women stated they want legislation because I haven't heard any such thing.

Did I say that? I said the women want to change the industry to limit artistic expression. I then said the MEDIA is using this to fuel something that will lead to some type of legislation.

If there wasn't an agenda here then it wouldn't be a blip on the radar.

Going to add if the only thing you know about gaming is Mario and you think GTA is about beating up prostitutes then I don't feel you have enough knowledge to voice your opinion on something you know very little about.

I don't tend to play a ton of AAA title video games, but it doesn't upset me when I see those games that have muscular male protags rescuing female protags. Why should it? Is it wrong for a guy to play a game where he gets the girl? There are enough AAA games that offer me the option I'm looking for to suit me, so I fail to see why we need to achieve perfect equality in all things here.

If these women want to see games designed a certain way and telling certain stories, then shouldn't they be doing it themselves? It's how women broke into the comics industry. They certainly didn't picket Marvel and DC and whine because those two houses refused to change their top titles right away. They did it from the ground up, and that's how these women should do it. It's the proper way, and it might just break them in and build demand for what they make.

Instead, they flagrantly alienate a large potential customer base, so now they likely couldn't get a start even if they tried. To many people are irritated by their approach.

The media isn't really sniffing around this, it's all social media. Plus, it is straight up stupid to censor yourself over what the media will do with anything.

It's the death threats, the Doxxing, the rape threats, the horribly hateful comments. That's what's wrong with the gamergaters...that and they put Gate at the end of their word. That and the incessant whining. "poor us" ...that and they seem to want women to keep quiet, stay barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. "silly women, you can't have an opinion..you're women for gods sake!"

That's their problem. However it's their right to bitch and moan 24/7 if they want to without getting doxxed.

MMMK...

I didn't say that was solely what GTA was about... I said dudes have the right to do that in a game they bought, if they want to as does anyone wanting to criticize said game for said reason.

I had never heard of this and frankly I couldn't help but chuckle as I watched the videos.

Am I the only one that thought this was a joke? They were serious?

This is what our world is coming to??

People need to get a life. I spent 1000 hrs playing...........REALLY?

We are doomed.

Turn it off and do something real, ANYTHING.

It's rather easy to put 1000 hours into a game or 3. When you say something real, do you mean like voting or watching tv?

Well then do you know what it's about other than the statement you've made about it???

Like I said, they can criticize all they like but when they're given more power to influence something than they should, that's where I draw the line.

I am not for gamergate or the people who made threats, I believe a lot of them should be jailed for what they did. At the same time I'm not for this feminists take on gaming.

I am against both sides on this issue and I just don't want my games to be screwed with, is that too much to ask?

You're going to complain because a game about street life put in prostitutes and lets you abuse them like happens in actual street life?

And you're not fussed about it letting you kick family pets to death, drive random hijacked busses full of people over cliffs, take carjacking victims up to the mountain cannibals, crash jets into crowded freeways and torture people ...?

I'd be upset about the prostitutes and their treatment if they were the only horrific thing in that game, but everything about it is one long carnival of how low you can go. They aren't getting any special treatment.

Maybe there is also an element of boys and men being hounded so thoroughly throughout culture by women.

I don't defend the obnoxious stuff. But sometimes, women should learn to let well enough alone or at least be less shrill about complaining that men are *gasp* men and like manly things and manly fantasies like we women like ours.

But here come the feminists insisting shrilly that manly fantasies are an affront to all womankind and wrong. Basically, being a man is an affront to all womankind and wrong.

I just read a yahoo article not 5 minutes after I jumped in this thread on how they're toning down the women in the new mortal kombat so it is more "realistic" obvious deflection from the real reason.

Don't worry though it'll still have 300 lb 6'4 muscle bound men beating and killing each other in the most horrible fashions. Ripping out hearts, freezing and smashing bodies, etc etc, but they want the women to have realistic features.... Mmmmkay...

I didn't even know this facet of humanity existed.

The video of the guy with his (moms) busted up car had me thinking this has to be fake WWE acting. I was ready to bust out the popcorn.

WOW my mind has been blown, but nowhere near as bad as whatever that was.

What the hell are you guys jabbering about? Did anyone read my post? These responses support my position that both Gamers and Gamergate aren't smart enough nor mature enough to know how to strategically deal with this issue. You'll have to put your big-boy pants on, to effectively nip this in the bud.

Anita Sarkeesian is nothing but a professional victim like most feminists. She's made a career from attacking the gaming industry despite never having played any of the games featured in her videos.

I think Quinn and Sarkeesian have managed to carve out a nice niche for themselves, getting paid for their opinion, without having to published peer reviewed work, nor conduct any real research. Its astounds me that they have found a way to make themselves relevant in an industry that they never worked in.

However, Gamergate is equally as useless. If they REALLY wanted to push back at people like Quinn and Sarkeesian all they really need to do is start a PAC (Political action committee) like all the big corps do. With the right amount of money and political support they could makes all these women's influence vanish overnight, by nitpicking their power through incremental legislation. BUT that requires real leadership and an actual long term strategy. Without that these women's influence will grow unchecked, due to not having a legitimate organization opposing their feminist position. Gamergate has to do EXACTLY what the NRA did when they formed the "Political Victory Fund" PAC. Not doing so means the Gamergate movement and opinion is meaningless. However, I think this is to complex and strategic for these people to implement.

I suspect that these videogame feminists are being financially supports by a group with deep pockets because as we all know, a big company can put anyone "out of business" these days by issuing endless IP takedown claims, cease and desist orders and frivolous court actions used to drain the recipient of money needed to pay for legal representation. In fact, I'm actually surprised that Video Publishers and designer haven't formed a PAC already to protect their political interests and counter dissent. Are videogame company executives short sighted buffoons too?
