I decided to scrub the comments that I had made..I obviously would never understand anything about psychotic male criminal behavior, unless I had been subjected to it-- the only couple of times stalkers followed me around was when I was in Italy, after having having made a trip one year prior to the country of Israel of all places.. I think I upset some people in important places, and I was followed around by some thugs who let me know that I was doing something wrong with all of my travelling, and all of my 9/11 homework on the internet..

I apologize though if I have misconstrued any or part of the information you have been willing to post here on ATS..I will u2u.

I don't believe equality is about taking out the garbage folks!

Throughout history women have disguised themselves as men for a variety of reasons. As for the internet, I can see why women would take on the persona of a male to avoid certain special types of abuse and harassment or societal expectations, reserved only for women.

No, I actually very specifically responded to each of the points that you made. You claimed that "women and men act and think differently". I observed that those differences are not so clear cut at all and observed that the statements that you made were generalizing. They are. Your statements are based on stereotyping and you even used the word. Stereotyping is the brain working in lazy mode. If you really took a good look at things, you'd see that things are not black and white but instead are a spectrum of gray. The second portion of my response to you was shooting down the fallacy that you created about my wanting jail time for them all. Nope, I sure don't--only those whose behaviors would be construed, if done by other communication mediums, as illegal as per existing legislation.

I've had guys willfully icmp flood me to try to remove my ability to play a game. Tell me how that isn't trying to chase me away again? I kind of wish that you were my neighbor so I could invite you over and make you sit and watch what happens. I think that might be a big part of the problem--a lack of perspective actually. When something isn't happening to a person, they may have a hard time comprehending it and go with what they know or what they think they know. It takes an active will to step out of one's shoes and into another's and that isn't always easy.

My stance is very simple and not at all what you're claiming in your own reply. We behave on the net like we would if the person was standing right before us--regardless of race, sexuality, ethnicity or gender. Makes us better role models for all those children that are growing up and learning social moraes via the net. That's a win and maybe some kids who have been online bullied so much that they commit suicide wouldn't have occurred if we all grew up a little bit more.

I actually used to writing editorials about gaming and you'd probably love the one I did on the subtypes of the female gamer. Most of these "subtypes" drive me totally nuts, too, so I can utterly echo the sentiment. I knew a girl who literally had a paypal account on her gaming profile with the urge to "help support her gaming". That was a "holy crap, I wanna barf" moment. To make matters worse, I think she had something going with a webcam as she made a strange comment about how she was going to go on her webcam now on a public server. I cannot even begin to describe how I felt about that other than that feeling of wanting to barf--well you could probably multiply it by the thousand.

Then there are "queens" (forget online princess-I really do think they see themselves as queens), uhh "really sexually liberated" (avoiding a euphemism) female players who dish it out to whoever comes their way, maneaters, and horrifically bad players (they exist for guys too--in spectator modes, sometimes I wonder how many people learned to tie their own shoes) because some guy wanted their significant other to stop yipping at them about playing games and is forcing them to play. And they can't.

The problem that I have with all of that is that I end up getting stereotyped as being one of the above when all I do is join a server and play the bloody game. I've been playing video games for 30+ years (Atari, Franklin Ace and I lived in video arcades). Why do you think I play them? Because I am a gamer. Whose fault is it that the stereotypes exist? Well, I think that's a two part answer. One, they exist because you have one of the above. Two, because people tend to stereotype and instead of waiting to see what the person who just joined is like, they choose to go on the offensive. I absolutely see where those stereotypes come from. Make no mistake about that.

Don't immediately judge a gamer based on their gender. Judge them on that individual's behavior and for all of the subtypes above, the only one that gets a pass from me are the ones that are really bad at it because you KNOW their significant other put them up to it. That's not cool. I had a friend once that I played comp with who tried to get me to teach his girlfriend how to play the game we played together in while at a LAN. She was not happy. I was not happy. He was trying to force her to do something that she had zero interest and ability in and it was making her miserable. I scolded him for it.

The ship analogy is kind of bs, you know. The ship is a false ship. There are a whole lot of female gamers that play those "male dominated" games that learn to hide their gender. I know A LOT of gamers like that. There are more females playing than you'll ever know.

Anyways, it'd be really very nice if some of the guys on this thread would also read what I am actually arguing against. I'm arguing against cyberbullying and cyberstalking for all. Not just women. Everybody.

I would hazard a guess many women would have done so and still do. Doesn't it make you wonder about ancient works by authors with the pen name 'anonymous' and 'unknown'.

It would appear that there is a blatant absence of women's governance on the WWW, in the political arenas, and high corporate offices.

“It’s like I’m getting raped every day”, said a victim/survivor of rape in Malaysia, after a new round of intimate photos of her were posted online

The paper “Voices from digital spaces: Technology related violence against women” builds primarily on evidence collected through focus group discussions, interviews, email exchange, and national consultations with the MDG3: Take Back the Tech! partners and with regional coordinators of APC WNSP between December of 2010 and May of 2011. The research provides sufficient data to map key trends and showcase that technology related VAW is on the increase and that women around the world are experiencing similar kinds of violations and harms. However, the absence of systematised data prevents us from comprehensively dealing with all manifestations and aspects of technology related VAW.

You mistake my intentions, I wasn't saying that was what you should do. I was trying to explain why men and women are trolled differently. I certainly don't suggest you become a troll lol.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. Doing such a thing is something I just could not do in a million years. Years and years ago, I knew a gamer and when he said he was suicidal, the entire irc channel that we were in flooded with suggestions on how to kill himself. Nobody was serious, I don't think. They treated it as a big joke. I was afk during it and he was gone by the time I got back. He went and killed himself. That hangs very heavy on my heart to this day.

When I lived with the Navajo, there was a concept that I struggled a lot with at times as it was so contradictory to what we, non-natives, are taught ourselves. We're taught that "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me". The Navajo are taught one simple phrase, words have power. I think that there is more evidence that words do have power when looking at all those kids who have killed themselves due to others' words than words being powerless. I think we lie to ourselves in dismissing that power.

So no, I could never troll because I know words have power. I'd rather save a soul than be just another blow to it.

When my gaming daughter tells me about online harassment of girls and women, strangely enough (considering she has me for a mom), she allows stronger females to take on the battle. It almost appears to me that she is becoming or is desensitized to it and that may also contribute to why it's a growing problem. Or perhaps, not so strangely, she is not confident in knowing how to handle this type of harassment because it does not exist in her offline life, coupled with her youth, then I can see how abuse and harassment towards the young and inexperienced can go unchallenged.

'All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for good people (changed from men) to do nothing'.

To be honest with everyone, this fascination with playing video games online seems to be part of the problem.. is it modern American entertainment that is creating all of this cruelty.. I believe it's a beautiful experience to parent children, and were it my choice, I would teach my children how to play instruments instead of allowing them to be on the internet so much.. these games are like cartoons, virtual cartoons, and I personally do not believe it is healthy for children or adults to latch on to this entertainment venue in this way.. Wouldn't one prefer to go climbing in the Colorado mountains, instead of sitting in front of a computer observing and being entertained by a "Gaming Industry" that is abusive, exploitative to begin with?

One should perhaps look at this dangerous "Gaming," industry differently, and realize that there are a set of powers and groups of powers, whose sole interest is to exploit youth and unassuming players both young and old. My goodness, I had read once, that there was currently some type of video online game, that concerned or revolved around Torture of all things.. There was the protagonist, and his duty was to "Win," and be able to exit a series of "Torture" chambers, allowing him to thereby make it to the next "Stage" of his/her Torture. This is totally ridiculous and absurb!!

Why would people want to play video games of this nature? This is revealing of an already contaminated and ill fabricated mind and society. It reminds me of people who watch and over engage in those "SAW" Horror movies..It just makes me wonder, what other types of video games now exist out there? that are probably far worse and more awful nowadays.. "Online Games" about Las Vegas Vice, drugs, the Occult and any and all horrible vices..

The Gaming Industry, is an Exploitative Industry; they wish to mould, make, create minds..it's like Hollywood and very dangerous..

I have never even seen the content of these Gamer Videos online and how they portray Women and Ladies, but I can bet that some of those games, wind up making allusion to exploitative sexual industries and exploitative sexual behavior. I would never let my children go near any of it, and I would show them how much fun Atari used to be, when you would simply play tennis back and forth with a little ball and a wall at the top of the screen...

I'm obviously too old for any of this..

I'd love if that were the case but her other statements and behaviors belied otherwise. I did, however, go easy on her and became her friend. She doesn't do these things anymore and actually gets pretty upset herself when she sees these behaviors in others in the gaming world these days. She calls me "mom" a lot. What I saw was someone who had some difficulties with self worth. She needed a mom and that's what I gave her right along with heaps of love. So no worries. I didn't attack her for it. Instead, I actually saw her and fulfilled a need. Still do even years later.

You'd be amazed at how many gamers call me "mom". A lot of kids need one apparently and I know what it's like to not have the parent you need. I'm more than happy to make sure that they have somebody in their life to turn to for support and I'm very proud of all of my kids, both the biological ones and the ones online.

I'm so sorry..I truly beg your pardon.. it's very clear to me now that you have an immeasuarably profound relationship with gaming and gamers both young and old, and that in these locations, well, that a series of extraordinary types of onlines relationships develop, both between members of the same gender, and between members of the opposite gender. What you are stating here is absolutely stunning, and I personally would have never known anything about this "Gaming World," until I found or discovered you here on good 'old ATS.
Wow, that's really just unbelievable.. welcome to your family, both biological and online..incredible..

They actually refer to you as "Mom", online? Gosh.. that's very profound.. I need to think about that for awhile..
