It never ceases to amaze me how some people cannot grasp the
basic principal that when the 'public purse' is empty, its empty and needs
to be replenished ....

Again, I think you may be missing the point here; even if we accept that the 'public purse is empty', that's not really the issue.
Why is the 'public purse' empty?
Because politicians / bankers / industrialists through their own incompetence, mismanagement and avarice wasted billions whilst at the same time ensuring that their slice of the cake was ring fenced and protected.
So the 'public purse' is empty....but MP's still get an 11% pay rise.
By and large bankers and industrialists are still getting their massive wages and bonuses.
