Especially with well respected Congressman Lewis the other day stating Obama should declare Martial Law.

And the NAACP stating their support of the National Guard call up by Governor Nixon.

So it seems the definition of martial law is not too precise, governors can declare it within their state, and activation of the National Guard in Missouri was done under the state's law authorizing the governor to call out the National Guard for martial law.

I am glad that cooler heads prevailed here, too. I was friends with this vet and, despite all of his troubles, he is one of the nicest and most caring people that I know. He's been helping people out around the neighborhood all summer in an effort to fight off all his demons from his experiences in Afghanistan. His mind just simply broke. He was a sniper and one of those young men whose tour was far too long. I'm very glad that he survived his attempt of suicide by police because that's what it was.

They are from Ferguson. What his dad said to me was that, in his view, the problem with Ferguson is that the poverty there grew so much over the last 10 years as the manufacturing left St. Louis that crime rose and that the police have, in turn, started to resolve those issues by simply shooting. He said that was the big difference between where we live and Ferguson. Here, we're much better off economically.

Overall, states and local governments have control over local police department requirements and pay. Finding out the differences between the two PD's is tough, lol. $53k is the median salary for a patrol officer here. $51k for Ferguson area using the same site (matters). In terms of requirements, that's really tough to find out, lol. What I could find is that sergeants for our PD are required to have 5 years of police experience and an associate's degree or better in criminal justice or a closely related field. Best I can do in comparison is St. Louis Metropolitan area. Same position requires 64 college credits or any associate's degree.

That actually is a substantial difference right there. Criminal justice here in the US includes subjects such as crime theory, crime analysis, crime control strategies, criminal law, and more. So heavy criminology focus. My fiance (Canadian) actually majored in criminal justice until certain experiences made him change his mind about choosing that path and I'll bring this up because I find it interesting. Canada has both the criminology and criminal law aspects but also has a lot of "soft skills" classes as well--interpersonal relations, interviewing, human rights, social justice and more. Just looking at the difference between what constitutes a criminal justice degree between US and Canada has some pretty stark looking differences.

That could explain a whole lot of some differences with US policing in general.

**Want to add one more thing--we do have problems in my city with police harassment. People I know have experienced it so we're not flawless. However, our city has a strong history of tasering unarmed and even knife wielding individuals over shooting them.

Actually, with all due respect it's not right wing propaganda. I linked to another post (here) done by someone in another thread that outlined this very thing very very well.

I'd say that instead of dismising this out of hand as 'right wing propaganda' this possibility needs to be given some real consideration and further exploraton. However, this is just my opinion and as always you (and everyone else) are entitled to their own.

This is what my friend from Ferguson was saying the other day and I've been trying to say. All sorts of outsiders coming into Ferguson with their own agendas and making it not about what's wrong within the community but recasting it into what they want. Imho, only the media, government officials, and support groups like amnesty international should be the only outsiders in Ferguson right now.

You're welcome. I would say, though, that whatever the National Guard has done yet (as far as I know) looks much less like martial law than many other things done this week that did not involve the National Guard.

Michael Brown memorial planned and confusion on arrest reports

The family of Michael Brown says they'll hold a public memorial for the slain teenager on Monday, reports The Los Angeles Times, which adds that the family hopes his body is released to them in the next two days.

While early reports Tuesday stated "31 people had been arrested, some of whom came as far away as New York and California," NBC News says it has more recent police data showing 78 arrests — and of those arrested, the "overwhelming majority of them were from Missouri."

An online memorial fund for Brown set up by the family's attorneys has now reached nearly $90,000. The firm says the family will use the money to pay for Brown's funeral expenses, as well as travel and living expenses as they advocate for justice on his behalf.
