I imagine the scientists and doctors are working from what they already know, not speculation. People have ridden on planes with Ebola victims and no-one caught the virus, so standing 10 feet away, outside from an infected man IN A SUIT is likely to carry very little risk at all. The people that are interacting with him obviously will have a bigger risk but even that risk will not be sky high because of the precautions they've taken and possibly due to the improved condition of the infected person.

Yes I know people will say it's possible that we could be being lied to about a raging Ebola outbreak but what is the probability vs. the probability of people getting off planes ill with something else? Millions of people will be travelling with similar symptoms everyday, so it's quite likely this elderly lady was ill with something else.

It states Scientists have developed a successful strategy for interfering with Ebola virus infection that protected 75 percent of nonhuman primates exposed to the lethal disease. This is the first successful antiviral intervention against filoviruses like Ebola in nonhuman primates. The findings could serve as the basis for a new approach to quickly develop virus- specific therapies for known, emerging, and genetically engineered pathogens.

It also states that

Ebola virus causes hemorrhagic fever with case fatality rates as high as 80 percent in humans. The virus, which is infectious by aerosol (although more commonly spread through blood and bodily fluids of infected patients), is of concern both as a global health threat and a potential agent of biological warfare or terrorism .

I applaud the fact they were able to find a way to see 75% of their chimps avoid a death worse than most can imagine.

I'm horrified to understand those same numbers mean 25% of them likely became body bags of mush and gumbo.

The Spanish Flu had a mortality rate below 3% and it shook our nation while killing more people than World War I itself, as it raged at the same time. This vaccine might bring Ebola down to 25% mortality. Divide that by 10 and it has simply matched the death rate when the Spanish Lady last came calling.

Sadly if she was a case of ebola in the UK the news will be controlled to avoid mass hysteria, we should all be aware that in order for any pharmaceutical to spend millions on research for a vaccination and treatment of ebola infected subjects it has to be enough infected people to recuperate investments and make profits.

I don't like the introduction of ebola into the US and perhaps in the UK.

BTW is not treatment for ebola as today and anything you read about "treatments" is speculative, the only treatment that the infected have is moral support and wait and see

I disagree, there is no way you can say with certainty it would be supressed to prevent panic, you can only speculate. The media are allready throwing about hysteria inducing headlines based on Ebola being in Africa. If our government wanted to supress panic and they have that power why are they letting papers do it now?

I think you are confusing it with how many people it killed. It killed 3% of the worlds population.

About 500 million people were infected, 50 Million people died.

That is a 90% survival rate...

Ebola has a 90% FATALITY rate. Flu can be spread days before and after symptoms are evident. That is what makes it so easy to spread. People don't even know they are sick. Ebola can only be spread while symptoms are evident.

Ebola can't be spread around an airplane, the flu can.

I have read a little bit of it and I don't see how this study is casting 'huge doubt' and I refuse to crap myself unless I get Ebola (Sorry that's in bad taste but you've got to laugh)

For one this study was looking at "patients with severe viral hemorrhagic fevers, especially in the acute phase of the disease"

In Ebola we know that the acute stage involves severe vomiting and bleeding, If someone is bleeding out of every orifice it's pretty likely they have Ebola, test or no test. A person at this satge is alreay likely to be in hospital and a strong suspect for the disease. From the study you quoted people in the earlier stages of Ebola will not be affected by this false negative scenario.

The woman on the plane to London, was ill after she left the plane and according to doctors did not have typical Ebola syptoms i presume that to mean she wasn't bleeding) , As she got ill and died soon after leaving the plane, without having the typical acute symptoms that would be present in an Ebola, they thought she was unlikely to have it and she didn't have the hemorrhaging that causes false positives.

Also we don't know what tests the medics used or whether they tested dilute and undilute samples just to be sure. The study was published in 2002 so don't you think the doctors would realise to adapt their tests by now?

I don't have blind faith in the government far from it but I believe in basing things on balanced research, there are papers about that demonstrate Ebola and related viruses don't spread that easily Being informed is good, running about like a headless chicken is not going to help.

I saw the news this morning, the doctor will also be coming to the US for "treatment" remember that "treatment" is none existent, I can only guess that they will become pin cushions and testing subject to the vaccine that is supposed to be developed.
