There is also the possibility that in some of the visits the tracking of IP location is in error or was done by proxy, etc. That would skew the location. Google or some other method/database for location.

That's very possible. I think my IP address currently portrays I'm in France or something, lol. I know it was Germany a few days ago because I was getting ads in German, lol.

So..let me get this straight?

We have people who use proxies... and the use of proxies somehow causes them to not know about MH370..or it turns them into trolls who in large numbers vote "I don't know anything about MH370"...depending on the proxy location/IP?

Sorry..can't follow there since I don't see a link of proxy use, or browser, operating system or my cat's name) and the poll's result. Unless you imply that a large number of people were out trolling, using proxies to hide their identity and screwed up the vote? (Which would be far-fetched, to say it mildly).

I'm American and I voted that I hadn't previously heard of it. It seemed like an unneeded option....

Sorry..WHY EXACTLY did you vote you never heard about it? As a joke because you thought the option was silly?

The idea being that location by IP is not always correct for the country of origin and especially if a proxy is used. This is referring to the votes all being from the US. Some could have been foreign to the US.

So if u asked this question and used the plane that was short of the runway in SF...you'd get the same results... See how I don't mention the flight number

Did it also dissapear and create a situation in which you could ask if aliens took it?

So you are saying that 26% of Americans participants are trolls, all 750 of them.

No, I'm saying a very large % of them are trolls. I believe I've even seen two people who posted on here saying they selected it because it was stupid. What's more, look at all the other possible choices. Look at how many people picked aliens and taken by a government entity, not just from the US, but from all countries. Are they not equally, if not even more retarded answers than "I didn't know about it"?

How many foreign languages can you speak and type?

Speak? Not many. Type? 80

That would say something about the culture of a part of the American membership.

Why? What's wrong with making a joke and/or not taking an obviously ridiculous poll seriously? Like I said, did you see the other options? I'd say not a single one is an accurate depiction of what might have happened. The only close one is "We'll never know" but, of course we'll eventually know. It might take a long a** time, but I'm sure we'll eventually figure out what happened to the plane. Last I checked, which was a couple weeks ago, they thought they narrowed down an area in the ocean where they think it went down. Now, it's apparently quite deep, and they don't have many subs that can go down that far, so it will be hard for sure, and that's assuming they're looking in the correct spot, but to say we'll NEVER know is quite a bold statement as well. I don't recall seeing a single option that said anything like "I don't know, but hopefully we'll find out soon" or anything similar.

The poll was a joke to begin with, so like I said, what's so wrong with make a joke right back?

It would be very strange if the group of foreign users of US proxies would have a percentage so large that it pumps the US result up to 26% while foreign users with a non US ip are at 1-2%. It still doesn't explain it.

I had to reply.
This POLL is FOR members of ATS. NOT ALL AMERICANS.

I apologize. Enjoy the next poll

I agree with that, these polls are a joke to begin with.

The point is, I don't believe that Americans made a joke en masse where others didn't. I think the results are what they are.

For all those that keep saying oh it's a error etc.... If it was an error then why just on the American vote??

Because it's mostly Americans who come here so it'll be mostly Americans who are screwing around on the poll.

Comeon people ... it's obvious ... it's impossible to be on the internet and not to have seen the information that the plane went down.

I think you will find that's not true!

Skeptic.. does have any hard facts on active membership nationalities??

And more pertinent to the test... what percentage of nationalities voted please?

Thank you,

Korg.

I would think that the poll allowed one vote per user id. I wonder if the site kept track of the selection voted by ID or only that the member voted. Was it mentioned if only one vote was allowed per member.

Funny how everyone is referring to the 26% Americans, when in fact we should Emphasis that its 26% of American ATS'rs.

And the Americans that do attend this forum are somewhat smarter then your average Joe...

Deny ignorance much? No wonder some of these threads get so polluted.

Of the Americans that votes on ATS....

To be precises...

Peace,

Korg.

It might be the case that the number of voters, to some extent, kind of reflect the percentage of visitors, Americans vs. UK vs. Whoever. I can see the actual site visitor distribution being similar. (Eg if 3000 Americans would vote and only 300 from the UK, we can conclude that possibly also 10x more Americans visit the site than Brits. Just simple statistics with SOME margin of error of course.

I over looked the fact that visitors not logged in can vote. It would think tor would help someone vote quite a few times. Guess it depends on just how well the voting is monitored.

May be even easier then that...

Darn, can't remember if it was on this poll or the Putin poll. But, someone did post they could vote multiple times if they logged out after each vote. That when they logged back in, they could vote again. Don't know if that issue was resolved from SO's side of polling.

AGREED.

I think the results say a lot of interesting things . . . PRECISELY what is difficult to guess at well.

However . . . I'm quite dismayed at all the insulting remarks about S.O's polls.

Polls have been asked for by many of us for months or longer.

S.O. comes out with several interesting polls.

Of course, the whiners, naysayers, Compulsive-contrarians et al

SIMPLY CANNOT seem to tolerate a contributive, constructive comment and MUST, as usual, fling poo, throw dust in the air and otherwise spew all over the poll thread and issues.

Impressive. /sarc

Polls will ALWAYS be imperfect.

HOWEVER, WHEN the sample size gets above several hundred . . . it's

REASONABLE TO ASSUME

THAT

the idiosyncratic, absurd, jokster etc. responses have averaged out, canceled one another out, and otherwise NOT GREATLY INFLUENCED THE RESULTS

IN ANY PARTICULAR specific way.

People are people . . . and the idea that 26% of Americans colluded to jokster the poll is more incredible and absurd by far

than to take the poll at face value.

Yes, ATSers are a bunch of 'bird's-of-rare-plumage' well above average.

However, last I checked,

ATSers's are STILL at least SOMEWHAT HUMAN.

Therefore, they fall within SOME predictable, reasonable parameters of what human means and how humans behave

even with regard to polls.

The 26% is an incredible statistic. The fantasized explanations are more incredible and more absurd.

There's better, more grounded, more reasonable explanations. They may be harder to discern and specify but they are far more logical.

One of the more plausible for me, from my own observations with my own social network is that many Americans are up to their necks with horrific, incredible etc. stories in the news and have taken to habitually ignoring the lot of the MSM's blather.

They see it as wholesale distorted to mostly false anyway so why bother.

Others are just shallow folks who are truly only interested in DANCING WITH STARS and other stuff that allows them a high measure of escapism from having to be real with themselves or those close to them.

It should be possible to get some other statistics from 'on the street' interviews etc. to compare with the 26%. I suspect it wouldn't be THAT FAR OFF from some other similar polls with the general populace.

In any case . . . I greatly applaud S.O.'s polls and hope he continues.

YES, the items could stand some more professional help with composing them. However, no matter how professional and well constructed, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE NAYSAYERS--PARTICULARLY ON ATS--WHO INSIST THAT THE POLL WAS POO TO BEGIN WITH AND THEREFORE IS ONLY WORTHY DERISION.

Personally, I think the naysayers are what's worthy the derision.

Sheesh.

I wouldn't blame S.O. if he trashed the whole effort.

While, actually, polling the unique ATS family has a LOT OF POTENTIAL FOR GOOD--EVEN FOR SOME LIFE-SAVING GOOD.

There are some extremely bright people on here. And we can analyze things probably better than a lot of think tanks.

Trouble is, the trashers and naysayers pollute the analysis so much that it often gets bogged down in destructive negativity sooooo much that the potential usefulness of the analysis is greatly diminished if not trashed, too. That's greatly sad.

However, the oligarchy is working hard to flush the whole planet down the chute to hell at a faster and faster clip.

Polling the ATS membership is one way we all can better discern the emerging trends and possibilities in terms of what's looming on the near horizon and how to better prepare for it. THAT COULD BE INCREDIBLY LIFESAVING.

I hope enough of us will cheer S.O. on and help out enough to make the polls a very useful and powerful VALUE ADDED feature of ATS--in spite of those who seem to get their jollies compulsively flinging poo 24/7/365.

Sigh.
