Yes, but the media was so oversaturated with it ... how could you avoid having it penetrate?

I do my best to filter out most pop culture crap having to do Bieber, the Kardashians and the like, but the media is so oversaturated with them that some awareness of them cannot help but penetrate. Who isn't aware that Kim is married to Kanye and has a child with horrid joke of name - North West? How can you avoid that even if you try?

MH370 is the same.

I'm barely aware of either of those pop culture idols and I'm thoroughly ignorant about the details of their lives--even the 'common knowledge' details.

It doesn't interest me and I'm pretty good at filtering it out as though it didn't exist.

Individuals reared in 'the information age' HAVE to be good at that to survive with any hint of sanity, imho.

I also had 15+ years in Asia wherein I went without even CNN for long periods. And when I had it . . . though it may have been on in the background--as when 9/11 began . . . most of my news gathering was on

www.FREEREPUBLIC.COM...

and

ATS.

It was my style to be fairly aware of the more important topics on both sites. But some things I just shut out as too shallow or too unimportant to bother my mental airtime with.

It seems to me that your perspective is guilty of a

HUGE FALLACY . . .

ASSUMING that most to all other ATSers

have YOUR perspective and habits.

I think there's a potentially other accurate label for that.

I suggest otherwise. If that were indeed the case, and it was just me saying "well I do this, so I assume that everyone else should", then we would see the same results the USA had in all the other countries as well. The fact is, we don't see that.

Every other country has a vote of 1-2% vs a USA vote of 26%. It's not a matter of habits, it's something else much more severe.

What happened?

Americans are too busy buying ammunition, isolating their neighbors, playing BDSM with corporations, polishing their KKK hats and thinking of the next knockout game to play.

What happened to MH370? What? You're asking me to not be at town hall evicting neighbors I don't like? What?!?!?

What I find even more disturbing is that the "would-be" Percentile of votes for all countries SHOULD have

'SHOULD HAVE' . . . according to . . .

YOU per YOUR . . . EXPECTATIONS . . . and constructions on YOUR 'reality.'

. . . stayed at about 2%. But the united states votes alone boosted that to 17%!!! that's insanity!

ACCORDING TO . . . drum roll . . . YOU and YOUR DEFINITION OF "insanity!" . . . according to YOU and YOUR EXPECTATIONS of reasonable and 'proper' behavior of Americans . . . according to YOU and YOUR perceptions and constructions of American 'realities.'

My fiance, who isn't part of this site (and we don't have TV) has heard of this incident, even before I mentioned it to her!

Whoooop T Do. I could probably, with RELATIVELY minimal effort . . . find you 50-150 Navajos who haven't heard of the incident at all.

I could probably find you a more or less equal number of Caucasians who either haven't heard of it or who are only slightly aware of some lost plane of some sort overseas.

It blows my [YOUR] mind how every single day on this site there is a topic on the front page about the missing flight, many times has it been the highest on the Most-Active-Topics list, and yet the highest number of votes in the United States is that they haven't even heard of it?

There you go again . . . ABSOLUTELY INSISTING THAT EVERY AMERICAN ON ATS

VIRTUALLY HAS TO SEE THE ATS FRONT PAGE

MORE OR LESS EXACTLY AS YOU DO!--registering on their brains, seeing all the information AS YOU DO, REMEMBERING ALL the information EXACTLY AS YOU DO! Valuing ALL the information EXACTLY AS YOU DO! Considering, filtering, filing, labeling, all the information more or less exactly as you do. . . . resulting in more or less similar statistics as you'd respond with.

NONSENSE.

There is no excuse...

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh . . . Excuse us . . . CLEARLY in your constructions on AMERICAN realities . . .

There's NO EXCUSE for Americans to be DIFFERENT than you are or different than YOUR expectations of them!

.

I have a DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE.

And guess what . . . I happen to think that my perspective is AT LEAST as valid as yours.

This thread is interesting in so many ways and I dont have time to list it all but.....

The percentage for america is suspisciously low considering the votes counted are the votes of members and not what we like to call sheeple.
Dont get me wrong tho, Im european and I definately would expect the american number to be lower than the rest, but 2%? The main thread has been high up on the "recent posts"-page everyday since the event. How can one miss it?
Had this been an MSN-poll it would be a more likely result on the US part imo, because, yes, americans (no, not all) are ignorant and dont give a crap about what happens outside of their borders. But I would think ATS-americans know better.

But take a look at the conflicts in the thread and the denial of the american members desperately hanging on to sabotage or some sort of miscalculation without for a second considering the poll MIGHT be accurate. Sounds like denial to me...

Members from other countries are well aware of the mentality of americans and their inability to admit mistakes and problems or whatever you would call this if the poll results are in fact accurate. (Yet you excpect your government to do just that.)
But at least some of you have contributed with posts admitting something is very wrong with the education and interest in the rest of the world amongst americans, so I guess there is some hope. Thank you for that.

But take a look at the result of the information published here - hostility and name calling between americans and the other countries.
If the members on ATS cant stick together, how good are the chances looking for the world as a whole?

But the fact remains no matter the results here - Americans need to realize there are countries outside of yours. Alot of them. And you should show some interest in them since your govt seems unable to keep invading them.

Just my thoughts. A couple of them anyway.

Well, I find it a bit odd that such a large amount of American members who neither read the news nor read anything on ATS suddenly decided to answer a poll regarding something they apparently had no interest in.

Must have been difficult avoiding the front page topics concerning this matter up until this poll showed up and they flooded in to vote.

How do 26% of American members not know about this?
Its all that's been on the news for months.

In countries outside of America, we generally get our own countries news and a summary of world news. Depending on which is bigger they may lead with the world news.

From different times I have spent in America either for work or holidays I notice that a lot of stations carry their states news and then some news from the rest of the US. A major world event might get a mention, but it you miss you wouldn't know because it often will not be returned to.

This used to be very bad a few decades ago ,when in America you, would never know what was going on in the rest of the world.

This should improve with many folks now getting news online.

However I do have to wonder if it is intentional/policy to keep a focus on America. The trick is to keep your own population focused on your own country and keep the rest of the world focused on it too. The world is flooded with propoganda from the US in movies/tv/media. It looks like its mandatory to have the US flag on display in US movies/tv etc. It was revealed in wikileaks cables that 'The simpsons' was provided to countries to promote US lifestyle. Yes the main character Homer is a bumbling fool but its really all about how great America really is.
The whole US media/film/tv shows is like a worldwide low level form of brainwashing.

Whats funnier is the denial.

Seriously, when posters from other countires raise issues about this kind of thing, they are either shouted down (usually ending up in territorial pissing contests) or other excuses are made, and yet the same thing tends to surface again and again and has all the time I've been on the forum.

We discuss this alot on Live! (which BTW, despite our best efforts not very many people seem to know about even though we are FOUR YEARS in, and have been on practically every Saturday night, have our own forum etc - you'd be amazed at the number of people who are ATS members who still ask "is there a show on?" or aren't aware we're there) - and I think it boils down to the fact that US News Media does not cover world events like other countries do. You don't get the stories, and if you do you only get a simplified US 'centic spin on them - and that reflects on how folks in the US look at foreign stories - even here on ATS.

Its understandable given the size/general independance of the USA. I'm sure it happens with other countries on other issues.

Bingo.

For US state, read small/medium European country.

For European citizens, the next step up from local news is actual world news

For US state citizens the next step up from local news is continental US/federal level news and THEN actual world news.
