Unconfirmed news in social media that earlier Russian marines have captured the Ukrainian naval base in Balakvla. Earlier this morning 100 unknown armed persons captured the Simferopol airport.

Russian warship off the coast of Miami,

I would hardly call it a warship. It was a rusty 1970's spy ship which best days are long behind it it. The French navy could win a battle against it

PS Sorry France but your History of Naval warfare does suck abit

I'd like to put a question out to ATS-land.

What will the US do if Russia does invade the Ukraine?

Any insight?

If its just the Crimea nothing. Just a few Angry words from your loonys in govermnet.

If they go for all Ukraine? We will likley have a good old traditional European gang bang (Over due really) and invite America to come along like always, just turn up on time this time

I highly doubt the 2nd option though as Russia are not dumb.

Would Putin just settle for Crimea though?

I think our government will talk big, but do absolutely nothing. (it's an election year, war wouldn't look good)

This where the situation in the Crimea gets murky - as i understand it, that is actually a Russian Naval base, but in Ukraine. The Russian Black Sea Fleet (or whats left of it) is based in the Crimea. Therefore Russia could legitimately claim that they are not invading there, they are merely protecting their property / assets.

Clearly, that is different to the situation with the unnamed gunmen in the local government buildings (as those building clearly are Ukrainian).

History shows us it is these types of situation that can significantly escalate, where nothing is in black and white.

Crimea is where all Russia's interest lie. Lots of Russian blood has been split there over hundreds of years and I doubt things will change.

Rest of Ukraine is just filler space and really only useful as a buffer zone but not worth WW3 over.

Crimea though has some of the most important Russian military bases plus many Russians live there, not to mention the Crimea has historically been Russian and was only given to Ukraine in the 50's as a sort of gift.

Russia has a lot to gain by keeping the Crimea but not a lot from the rest of Ukraine.

Wow, I've been face-palmed by Slayer69, my life is now complete.

For future reference, a bit of cometary would have been nicer way to go.

I've never interacted with you before, but that makes you come across as a jerk.

Nice first impression.

The Crimea became Russian during the Reign of Catherine The Great (1762-1796). Before that, it belonged to the Ottoman Empire (who took it from the Mongols), the Mongols (who took it from the Byzantine and Khwarezm Empires). Before that it was Greek Bosporan kingdoms and before that Sycthian and Cimmerian. Basically, fought over throughout history......

Do you honestly believe WW III would simply be popcorn worthy entertainment? Even if said in a Tongue-in-cheek manner Tens of Millions or more would die.

This business about Ukraine being an independent country is nonsense. It's not possible. It's prime territory for a Union, but crummy territory to be independent. They HAVE to choose sides.

If Russia was able to go in, secure their assets, and manage to control an airport so that there was no blood shed. Good on them. Why is this a bad thing?

All this talk about Russia Russia Russia... EU is a pot stirring, manipulative country. Ukraine is just the silver spoon.

All the news I've been reading has been EU/US controlled media. No wonder we haven't seen the other side of the story. What have the other nations been up to? I'd be interested in knowing more about EU's financial status compared to the Russian Federation at the moment.

I've stated now in two or three threads today, Russia will seize or has seized the airport and will fly in more spetsnaz troop without opposition.

These are the troops...looks like soviet izlom camoflague.

They are terrified they're about to loose the blacksea port, they port they've leased until 2042 /47.

The use key words in their statements to the press such as extremists.

The ukraine has 5 nuclear plants..and when you add a country full of "extremists" the Ukraine becomes a direct threat to Russias national security.

Thank you! Now I understand the face-palm. I really wish ATS would get with the program and add a special sarcasm font like most other sites. My entire post was intended as sarcasm. So much doom and gloom gets posted around here, I couldn't help but add a bit of snark. Sorry for the confusion.

For the record, I am anti-war; actually anti-violence of any kind for any reason.

I can't see any reason for the EU or NATO to intervene military to oppose a Russian armed intervention.

If the Russians do send in the troops, the EU will wring it's hands, America will bluster, but the Russians will get their way. Because at the end of the day, we need Russian gas to keep the lights on in Europe.

I'm looking for better links but they seem to be discussing dissolving the Kharkov Agreement, the one which leases the Black Sea port to Russia.

www.interpretermag.com...

The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada or parliament is reviewing whether to annul the Kharkhov Agreement on Russia’s stationing of the Black Sea Fleet on Ukrainian territory, ITAR TASS is reporting.

Deputy Oleg Lyashko has made the proposal today from the podium.

“Given the position the Russian Federation is taking on Crimea, we must immediately abrogate the Kharkhov Agreements,” said Lyashko.

news.mail.ru...

KIEV, February 28. / ITAR-TASS /. Kharkov agreements concerning the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, should be abolished. Such a proposal was expressed from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Lyashko

I don't think this will go down well with Putin.
