Quite a few Mag 6.8 and 6.9 earthquakes in recent months, but no Mag 7's since 23 June.
2014 significant quakes (according to USGS)
Maybe we are in for a below average year in large earthquakes?

That is a pretty pointless list (no reflection on you). Why do they bother with it? It is so incomplete as to be worthless.

New swarm in Tjörnes Fracture Zone in Iceland. I feel this belongs to this thread, as there is no volcano located in that exact spot. These are located in Grimsey Lineament.

This shouldn't be connected to Bardarbunga activity. TFZ is often very active, but then the activity suddenly dies off. Some swarms have lasted for 2 weeks or more. The swarm usually starts moving towards northwest along the plate boundary.

Tjörnes Fracture Zone is submarine volcano, series of underwater fissure vents, last erupted in 1868. Its discussed that there is huge amount of stress in TFZ, it even might have capability for magnitude 7 earthquake. That is why its interesting area for observation. There are often huge swarms with hundreds of earthquakes, strongest ones shaking the nearby towns and Grimsey island.

yes it has been quiet lately

any guesses where the next one will be?

I have a feeling it could be Kermadecs, Fiordland or Vanuatu in our region, been too too quiet here, especially Fiordland
it just picked up today with a 4.5 and a 3.8 offshore Puysegur Trench
Been a few Pacific Antarctic Ridge quakes 2 days ago, sometimes an indicator things are moving our way
www.ldeo.columbia.edu...

thing is to pick a place that is NOT there on the list

It has been relatively quiet along the eastern Himalaya/Tibet/Nepal/Bhutan/south central China region for a while.
But I have a terrible record for guessing coming quake locations.

70 events in that one so far
closer (interactive) map
yeah its a pretty active area for sure
if you go through the maps and zoom each one in to the spot, its always got 100's per month there (except in Aug/Sept 2014)
Iceland 2014
maybe things are returning to normal for Iceland

Seems like this swarm didn't last long. Just wondering that exact location, the recent swarms have been in Husavik-Flatey Fault (HFF). I guess it was time for Grimsey Lineament to release pressure (or build it). There hasn't been strong earthquakes in TFZ for at least year. The last long swarm was exactly year ago, starting 25th of September and ending 3rd of October. But that was again in HFF. As far as I have found info, last swarm in this exact same location we had this swarm was in 1st of August 2013.

In June 2013 Rúv.is news talked about pressure building in TFZ, that there is expected to be more swarms. TFZ has been building tension at least 200 years, and these small swarms do not release it. Last strong earthquake happened 38 years ago near Kópasker, magnitude 6.5.

This following shot of Old Faithful won't impress you. So, don't bother thinking about it. However, the top little blue squiggles are something because it shows up else where. Probably nothing much.

I really came on to write about my fear that Turkey is where we may find the next biggish one. It's not just me. I've pulled up some studies in my email box which lay out the argument as to the whys. I have looked this morning to see the general area around Turkey is a little bumpy. Again, probably nothing but scattered thoughts bouncing around in my ole' nut.

Um, Oklahoma. Oh my. Kansas. Oh my. nuf said.

Had to add. Man, that Yellowstone shot came out so small. Whatever. Here's a link to the actual page.

The Princes Island segment has been mentioned before in articles about Turkey, but I think it already slipped for that western part of the North Anatolian Fault

but I could be wrong
so could they
funny I was thinking about downloading a bunch of data for Turkey earlier this morning, haven't got around to it yet.

Did that;
from May the rest of 2014 up to end of September
all of 2012 (only had Dec.)
the rest of 2011 (Oct-Dec)
Finally got the Van series on there!
its still shaking after 3 years (23/10/2011), 48 earthquakes in Sept, maybe it will never return to normal.
2011/2012 was quite a rough couple of years for the Greeks and Turks

I'm just going through each month and creating the links to the M5's where applicable, 100-140km winds and rain here.

Tjörnes Fracture Zone activity is up again. After the first swarm, it was quiet for 7 hours, then there was 3 quakes within 3 hours, then again quiet for 4 hours, until new swarm started. This new swarm released much more energy, as the overall magnitude was higher, even with fewer quakes. There was even one 3.4 magnitude quake. Lets see if we see another swarm during tomorrow.

Too bad NICE network is down, last GPS datapoints are from February. Would be interesting to see Kópasker GPS. Nearest working GPS shows something crazy, but it started in May:

Just had a good shakeup here, a long way from me but it sure felt strong, cat took off, it was strong enough I was waiting for the "real" shaking, but it died away.

A Magnitude 6.0 has hit southern China according to USGS. (originally listed as mag 5.8)

Also reported as a Mag 5.8 Mag 6.1 by www.emsc-csem.org... and Mag 5.8 Mag 6.1 by geofon.gfz-potsdam.de....

It looks to be a fairly low population at risk of strong shaking--that's good.
