Hawaii is on average 0.1-0.2 microrem/hr right now. That's what it was when I left there 7 years ago too.

Thanks. This is about what I thought it was.

Even in reactor 4 of Fukashima itself, the radiation level isn't terribly serious. I mean, they let the worlds media in last week to report on the operation to start removing the rods.

And the worlds media have insurance companies, and those insurance companies would not be letting the worlds media go marching into a deadly environment. (Not to mention the reporters themselves wouldn't be mad keen on it.)

Actually this sort of genuinely terrifies me, particularly in Germany where they have shut down their nuclear reactors (Despite them being, y'know, German-engineered, so probably amongst the safest reactors in the world) and opened up huge numbers of coal-burning plants.

And burning coal is just a disaster. It will kill way more people than Fukashima ever kills. But, the general public has this weird terror of the R-Word.

Thyroid cancer rate has been increasing for the past 30 years. Whether this is due to better detection or an outside factor(medical radiation or post-nuclear testing radiation) is unknown. If you have any evidence of a recent spike rather than the continuous rise, please post a link.

Coal is BAD NEWS. no doubt. I was under the impression that the radiation is somehow different being unrefined.

The crazy part is that the energy used around East TN is coal, and yet Oak Ridge is right there. The TVA and the coal plants have caused more cancer, always considered it to be from the breathing particulates.

All I know is that radioactive waste is unappealing for anyone. Why leave trash that future generations have to deal with.

There are warehouses, mostly underground, at the ORNL facilities that are contain moth balled energy generating devices.

think about a car alternator. The think requires a fraction of 1 hp to rotate, and yet can generate 200 amps. that is ALOT of amperage. at 12v. the things have components that RESTRICT the electrical output potential.

You can connect 10 in series and have 120v and 200 amps. pretty easy junkyard finds at 20 bucks a pop.

then you incorporate a battery bank. through the battery bank have a capacitor that provides steady power to an electric motor. say a 5 hp industrial duty double wound.
