Okay, just got to say this. People freaking out over the 10 year pollution video need to look at the study. At the peak of pollution it will only be twice as high as prior to the event. We are talking very small trace amounts here. This isn't going to kill off the entire ocean, but certainly something you want to pay attention to. Now, if anything else major happens there, then you might need to worry.

Edit: Sorry, it will be only twice as high at the end of the 10 years, peak pollution in some areas will be around 5 times higher than before the event. But again, still pretty low amounts.

And what radiation is that? Background levels in Hawaii are as low as they ever have been.

Does anybody have any actual hard data on what the radiation levels are outside of Fukashima? I haven't seen any spikes in Hawaii or on the east coast of America.

If it was truly pumping out ELE levels of radioactive death, why hasn't anybody died yet in Japan? Why isn't the exclusion zone larger? If people's hair was falling out in Japan, I know their government is a bit useless, but people would be demanding something done if large numbers of people were dying.

I just see a lot of panic and fear-mongering backed by very little science lately, and it would be nice to see some hard figures if anybody has them?

Maslo
Another day, another bull# Fukushima fearmongering thread.. Extinction level event? Really?
Even in a worst case scenario, the world outside of Japan has nothing to worry about. This is, and will stay a regional catastrophe.

So what you are saying is its OK to lose Japan as long as the rest of the world isn't affected? I would like to know, upon what specifics do you base that appraisal of the worst nuclear disaster in history? You are stating it wont affect the rest of the world and yet Tuna off California is showing up with radiation that will only increase over time. If you are basing this on facts instead of opinion, please list links and or sources.

Thats nice, I am willing to trust Snopes with respect to urban legends but not a nuclear accident that is being covered up by the nuke industry.

True, but I trust them more than people copying the same image over and over again, claiming it shows the radiation, when it's really just tsunami data.

And the 10 year radiation video might look scary, but the pollution is actually in very low levels, the levels along the pacific coast in the US will remain safe for the entire 10 years.

I always did think the ocean maps were bogus. I am not basing my concern on those maps but the worry to me is cumulative radiation over the next couple decades. I think its getting into our food, and to be sure sea life. I don't know if we are looking at an extinction level event, but to be sure the world cancer rate is going to go up over time. Over the next couple centuries this thing is going to affect us. Also thats assuming we dont have more accidents. If we have an accident like this every few decades, that will irradiate an area for literally tens of thousands of years, that is bad news for the human race. We already have two irradiated areas on Earth, how many more will we have before we realize nuclear is too dangerous a technology to boil water?

Hawaii is on average 0.1-0.2 microrem/hr right now. That's what it was when I left there 7 years ago too.

I completely agree with you there. But based on the readings I've been seeing on the coast here the past couple years, the radiation in the air isn't anything to worry about. The water certainly isn't. However, I would avoid any fish caught right off Japan. Unless another event happens, the worst is over.

I think they need to either make nuclear plants safer, or get rid of them all. The permanent damage done by these things isn't worth it.

And there aren't many others out there that both work well, or are safer. Coal is as nasty as a nuclear accident, on a daily basis. There are tons of radioactive materials pumped out of a coal plant. Solar and wind aren't efficient enough yet for large scale power, and no alternative sources are close to ready for large scale power production. So no matter what our choice, it's not going to be pretty.

Hey, at least the people here are more rational than at some other conspiracy websites. ( that I won't name out of respect.) IQ around here is way higher. I actually like you guys.

Fitting I guess, as Einstein said once atomic power will kill us in the end. Guess he was a smart guy for real.

I don't like the idea of downplaying the scenario of radiation in the ocean and air. Radioactivity needs to be CONTAINED, no fear mongering here.

437 nuclear power plants around the world. In my opinion that is 437 Nuclear seeds waiting to "Blossom".
Another "Carrington" event or EMP strike could very well spell the doom of us all. The Dangers of Nuclear power far outweigh our maturity as a species. Even in a Utopian society free of war and strife we would still have to figure out a way to safely dispose of spent fuel. Stuffing them in the side of a mountain is not an answer. We do not even live in a Utopian society.
This is a world full of strife and everlasting conflict. "As long as there has been man, there has been war". The last world war happened just before the nuclear age. The next world war (I pray that it never happens) WILL be nuclear. Nuclear proliferation only works until the first big red button is pushed. After that button is pushed how many nuclear power plants will be able to contain themselves. How many of us would be left to try and contain it.

Nuclear power plants world wide.

All I know is that if something did happen, I will be on my way to either Africa or Australia.

fukushima will harm us all, and nuclear energy is stupid, the whole world hostage to the rich that own energy.

Einstein was pretty smart, he was smart enough to know he wasn't the smartest. His wife was, lol. and nuclear energy is stupid. no matter what it can do for energy demand. the waste.. ffs the waste.

radioactive? that should be enough. no way, no nuke
