But step in the wrong place at the right time...that funny freakin' smudge on that kids face is gonna see a hollow tip, a fist, some nun chucks...etc. Then your community is going to yell...racist black people...then they're gonna say, no we were picked on. Then the courts gonna say bring everybody in here....then everybody is gonna go to jail because a jackass was practicing his freedom of speech. Then guess what's gonna happen....everybody is going to jail! All because of one immature jackass! Are you gonna go there?

Who is the real racist? The kid wearing makeup in good fun.. as offensive and tasteless as it is.

or the guy who believes X race is going to kill you and start a race war if you offend them...

aka: "Don't offend black people or they will jump you"

I'm saying neither are explicitly racist.

Dave Chappelle was humoring stereotypes, did you see the stereotype pixie bits? Joking about stereotypes isn't, by definition, racist. Pointing out proclivity and differences while at the same time being totally neutral when it comes to how people interact isn't racist. I'm white, obviously. One of my colleagues is black, I get along really well with him, he's got a nice family, and even though we live in different cities, I often do work overseas with him. Guess what, his brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee (his wife's really, but his monetarily) has shiny aftermarket wheels on it. The fact that he enjoys that fits the stereotype, do I poo-poo him for it? Nope. In fact, it has no bearing on our professional or personal relationship what-so-ever. Similarly, I probably do a lot of things that makes him think "that must be a white thing". Does it affect the way he works with me? Nope.

Likewise, the teenager impersonating Trayvon Martin. The kid probably isn't a racist, and thinks he's being really clever. I bet you his actions have no bearing on how he interacts with or treats black Americans. If his actions make you have racial preference for any reason, then I would argue you are either VERY impressionable or racist already.

Really??? I suppose I shouldn't be shocked... I just can't believe anybody would find this funny and be proud enough of that fact to then post their face all over the internet looking pleased with themselves.

I know we have the "Right" to do this kind of thing but that doesn't mean we have to. There is something wrong in our society where we still find this kind of thing funny.

Really? This offends you? I'll give you offensive. I have two friends of mine that absolutely love being as offensive as they possibly can when they dress up for Halloween. Here are some examples:

1) The year after 9/11 happened they went to a party dressed as a building on fire, and the other one was dressed as a plane. My friend even cut a hole in the building costume and was throwing toy soldiers out of it mimicking people jumping out of it. I'm not easily offended and I thought it was over the line and I told him so.

2) Another year they dressed as Hitler and a Jew.(Yes they went there)

3) Another year they dressed up as a Catholic priest and an altar boy. Making fun of all the new stories about pedophile priests that were all over the news a while back

I could go on but you get the idea. They pick the most horrific and offensive thing they can think of and they make costumes out of it. They used to do this every year. And I remember everyone was waiting for them at the party just to see what over the line offensive thing they would do that year. They're good guys they just love seeing peoples shocked and disgusted reactions to their costumes.

Some people can make fun and laugh at anything. Even if it's offensive to some people. It is what it is.

Okay...race war, I never said anything like that...keep your personal ambitions and thoughts to yourself! By the way, I'm not a guy...yet, read or take from my post what you will...I could careless.

It's still never funny to make fun of any murdered individual regardless of race. However, I wouldn't expect someone so enlightened to understand my low level of thought

ETA
Makeup in good fun...HA!!! Who the hell do you think you're talking to? Do you even care? It doesn't matter....it's never going to be funny. You're unfortunate in many ways. Obviously nobody told you this, so I have! Wether you care to think about it or not is your choice.

It's all good though...to each their own. Keep it moving....I'm way to simple minded for you (I'm really lmfao)!!! Move on...I don't have time for you...you said I called for a race war when I never said anything remotely related to that. Talk all the big smack you want...it's still wrong to make fun of a dead child of ANY RACE!

I deleted a previous post...sorry, just not worth the bother...my grandmother always told me not to argue with a "fool", wisdom from 1907.

The most offensive costume I've seen was at a Halloween party in 2001. An aquaintence of mine and his best friend dressed up as Obi-Wan Ken-obi from Star Wars and the world trade center. "Obi-wan" would go on and on about how "those blast points were too accurate for sand people".

Some people hated it, some died laughing. Either way, it was just a costume, and no one thought anything of it in the coming days.

Yeah like I said. Some people have a really messed up sense of humor. Doesn't make them bad people.

I understand that, but Obi Wan wasn't real...the Twin Towers were very real and so were the people in them.

They both dressed up to accomplish the single gag. The punchline was lost without one, and the context was lost without the other.

They're not celebrating blackness, and they're not trying to assimilate, that much is obvious.

They're making fun of stereotypes that they find hilarious. It happens across cultures, nationalities, and races. Would you feel offended if they had a stuck-up dutch party where everyone rode bicycles to the party, wore button downs, wooden clogs, and ate pickled eel? They all wore blonde wigs?

Would you feel offended if they had a Japanese themed party called "suits and school girls" where they all spoke like they were on the SNL skit J-pop America? They all wore wigs with straight black hair?

Does that mean anyone who attended that party would treat dutch or Japanese people differently in person?

Either it's all okay or it isn't. Saying one is okay to do while another is not is discriminating.

Imagine that if we simply jailed people for being stupid, Washington DC would be a ghost-town, most major cities would be empty, and outlying areas would be populated by three or four children below the ages of two.

If we simply allow stupid people to act in such a way that identifies them as such, then we can all avoid them in the future.

Ironically enough, though, if we are going to brand stupid people for holding different beliefs, then where would it end?

I imagine that there are those on ATS that would gladly slap that label on myself.

I know this wasn't directed at me....however, I would like to know how many people posting have actually travelled out of their native land? Better yet, how many have travelled to another land filled with people of another race where they were the extreme minority?

I have done it soooo many times. It still amazes me....other cultures. But that's not what this thread is about. This thread is about making fun of a teenager slain...then being made fun of with others setting the scene wirh, Neighborhod Watch"!

Don't laugh!!!

You can roll it up, wrap it, seal it....it's just not funny!

Dutch Black Pete

and im not saying the young adults them selves are racist but the whole idea and mindset is..why are you even pretending like this cant be seen as offensive?

You know I am not taking your bait.
Just as I do not know you you certainly have no idea what sex or race I am nor am I going to tell you. There was no smack in my comment... whatever that means. For someone who could care less you seem awfully offended. You post on a public forum and then tell someone who disagrees with you to keep personal thoughts to themselves... I fail to see the logic in that, but whatever. Although, I did find your feeble attempts at witty sarcasm in place of logic and reason mildly entertaining at most, but I digress.

Now, if i may, go back to the actual topic and away from insults. I did say it was offensive and in bad taste, and I do not agree with the costume at all. You, however, are the one that said and I QUOTE.

ThePublicEnemyNo1 that funny freakin' smudge on that kids face is gonna see a hollow tip, a fist, some nun chucks...etc.
sic

Because a guy wears an offensive costume you say the offended party will resort to physical violence rather than trying to reason or even just cuss the guy out. You sure do not think very highly of people. I will even bold the next fun part. You even say who the offended party will be in the next quote.

ThePublicEnemyNo1 Then your community is going to yell...racist black people...
sic

The the thing is. No one, not you, and certainly not I has a right to not be offended. We do, however, have a right to wear offensive costumes and complain about the people wearing the most offensive ones. I was just wondering why you jumped to the conclusion in your mind that black people would shoot a man for wearing a costume?

I was on the fence before, but I'm convinced you are racist now. You're only selecting incidents where white people make fun of black stereotypes. What about Indians making fun of Pakis? What about blacks making fun of whites? What about Swedes making fun of Norwegians? What about Poles making fun of Russians? What about Russel Peters (Canadian Indian) making fun of Chinese from Hong Kong? What about Mel Brooks making fun of everyone?

reply to post by ThePublicEnemyNo1

I travel for a living. I am a military contractor. I've done security work in Iraq, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Eritrea, Djibouti, United States, France, and a very brief stint in Russia. I was replying to the people screaming racism instead of screaming bad taste. I think the giant media onslaught over the Trayvon Martin case was rediculous. Those kids would never have known about the incident if the media had let that trial be a private criminal/civil matter like it ought to have been. How many murders in the US? Why that one? The racial makeup of the case wasn't exactly uncommon, even if the roles were reversed.
