Since military/police force is the continuation of politics by other means -- I put this in US Political Madness. Mods, please move to appropriate spot as necessary.

I know we've all been watching as helicopters race back and forth over populated areas simulating war games in such areas as New Orleans and Miami. We've witnessed armed troops on our streets. Now, it appears that we are witnessing a historical throwback (or a new low) -- gunboat diplomacy.

Is this ok with you? Is this what America is all about?

Without more information all I see is a local Reserve unit doing training. It is the weekend after all. You don't exercise the equipment from time to time and it will fail you when you need it most.

It's probably Special Boat Team 22 out of Mississippi. They're training.

When I see this happening here in the States, THEN I'll start to get worried.

Then again, maybe they are filming another movie? DoD supports all sorts of Hollywood productions.

So far, everybody is ntsh,ma. Okay.

But le's ask op, have we seen this training exercises conducted in this area? This looks like a residential waterway, have you ever seen them doing this before around here, op? Have you seen this many personnel doing g this training?

If this is something done every so often, then indeed, nothing to see here. But if this is the first time these guys are passing through, then, yep, more police stet conditioning.

Training in the same place over and over breeds complacency and complacency kills. Training must be realistic and even hazardous at times.

I was a Training NCO for quite a few years and we rarely trained in the same place. Sometimes it even took place in cities and towns, but we always coordinated our activities with the local government.

That said, sometimes the local government didn't let the LEO's know we were in their AO training and that always led to some tense, but eventually humorous moments.

And those local governments, they rarely let the populace know either.

They train in a lot of areas. Sometimes they train for urban stuff, sometimes they train in the field, but it all depends. Special Warfare guys train all over the place, because they fight in so many different places.

Hey, you're right. You are just a civilian. So you don't know everything but still question it. Good for you I say.

But there is a saying...train how you would fight. Static training areas breeds familiarity, which breeds complacency, which gets people killed unintentionally. Going to the range to qualify is one thing, but throwing people into uncharted territory always makes them step things up on notch. Makes them think.

Nothing personnel, just trying to educate.

Sure..Gunboats patrolling is one way to sensationalize the pic..another is to just say that is training... and like every profession ever you don't train for the sake of training..you train for real world scenarios..

I question anything I don't understand as I would prefer to understand than not......

thx for your reply and I can see the logic in what you are saying....I would much prefer them to familiarise an area than make mistakes

Really that's our gunboats? They look so generic nothing like the sweet ones they had in the movie Apocalypse Now. Now those were bad.
These look like something made in a shed by drug runners.

Perhaps that creature as seen on the Deep Water Horizon disaster cam really is out there and it's moving inland. Gulp, think I seen some movies like that.

Would it be too much to ask that they dismount the guns while going through populated areas like that? It's a small thing... I'm sure they are not running with ammo loaded, let alone ready to shoot ..but APPEARANCES used to mean a great deal in America. NOT causing stress to the public and keeping the work of the Military as much out of sight as reasonably possible used to be a high priority.

This is absurd. I don't see much excuse for running boats down populated waterways with light machine guns in the mounts and men at the stations. It's just not necessary. The boat driver was the only one getting training on THAT stretch of water.

Why , what's to say the next real world op is not in a population center?
Training for the real world requires training in the real world.

Which part of the military or anything is out of sight in the modern world with the Internet, camera phones , insert something else here.

Thank you for your respectful, mature response, and please realize that I mean no rudeness or disrespect when I say MY ASS.

They have so many places to train THAT ARE NOT POPULATED BY CIVIES. What is the point of having these guys boat into peoples backyard waterways? What is the need to have men stationed on the guns? For what? Why train in a civilian populated area?

The explanation of them having to switch up training locations in order to keep em' frosty makes plenty of sense. But I seriously doubt they even bother with this. They train hundreds of thousands of troops each year at one military designated location, then they are shipped off. If more training is in tow, they send them to another military designated location. They have countless number of areas that are not populated by civies, yet they have a need for these guys to gunboat down a residential waterway? With all stations manned? For training?

since when did they have a need to have them train amongst civilians to keep them on their toes?

Please...

Because realworld operational targets have changed.
It's not longer the jungles of Vietnam or warefare that is contained in nice and remote out of the way locations.
A sad reality.

I was just wondering where the blank firing adapters are on their weapons? this is a residential neighborhood, with children, and fairly densely populated, not a bayou, but canals between houses, do soldiers regularly patrol in your neighborhood? with live ammo? there is plenty of unpopulated shoreline to play soldier on, and lots of folks who don't trust the gov. in the south, are they pushing for a confrontation?
