This would go somewhere towards restoring the credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize after somehow it was awarded to Obama in 2009.

Especially this ^^, ever since Obama got that nobel price i can not take them seriously anymore, how much do you think he has paid to "get" awarded?, probably more then the 1million he got from it.

But wasn't Assange also nominated shortly after the whole wikileaks thing got media attention?

Would be nice to see some real hero's getting awarded for what they really did and not just get a nice trophy because your "THE" first ever black pres of the US. Except if warmongering is what they now define as peace (wich looks a lot like it nowadays).

Awarding it to Obama didn't just cheapen the Nobel Peace Prize, it's completely discredited it in the eyes of the world. Awarding it to Snowden (which will not happen) would change nothing in my opinion. It's a mockery and will remain so as long as Obama is on that list.

Actually the Nobel Peace Prize has been discredited after Kissinger got it for helping start the Vietnam war... erh... I mean ending it *cough coucgh*

Also the NPP or similar prizes are at times awarded to grant people a bit more security due to publicity, especially in countries that don't give a damn about human rights and have a history of torturing and or even killing political prisoners, like China, Russia or the USA to name a few. Killing a nomenee or even a winner gets you much more bad press.

That would be a prize for chemistry or medicine... Not for peace. I don't understand you calling Snowden a reality star... The fellow is doomed socially.

Hi ATS.

The fact that O'berry perfidiously received this honer pollutes it's pedigree and makes one wonder the validity of the issuing governance of it's accolades.

My statement is true and just. What do you think???

Who in your opinion is a more deserving person to receive this once coveted award?

Someone who cures cancer.

What does curing cancer have to do with peace? Are you sure you're thinking of the correct award?

Yeah lets give someone a Nobel Peace Prize for breaking the law and becoming a traitor!

It would be beautiful if he won this award on so many levels. Snowden deservedly "pants-ed" the US. Now the US has basically revoked his citizenship, trapped him without a passport, and are treating him like he's Osama bin Laden. If they give him this award under these circumstances it would be another well deserved slap in the face to the US. Please make this happen.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 93 times to 124 Nobel Laureates between 1901 and 2012, 100 individuals and 24 organizations. Since International Committee of the Red Cross was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1917, 1944 and 1963, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1954 and 1981, 100 individuals and 21 organizations have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Click on the links to get more information.

And the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize goes to:

Barack H. Obama

The Nobel Peace Prize 2009 was awarded to Barack H. Obama "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".
The Nobel Peace Prize IMO should be awarded to someone who attempts to benefit Humanity.
Not someone that attempts to get rich off of the poor, middle class & me which in somewhere in between i guess.

As Obama adds another log to the Trayvon fire.

I have to admit that I don't see Snowden as a hero. Sure, he leaked stuff that was important. But it was stuff people already knew. What happens when the information he is supposedly not sharing with China, Russia, etc. spills American blood? Will he still be a hero then? Will you still applaud him?

I hope he shares everything with Russia in exchange for a fighter jet escort to a Latin resort.

If he pulls that off he is even more of a hero.

I don't think he would do that.

Further, no intelligence service - not even our own - has the capacity to compromise the secrets I continue to protect. While it has not been reported in the media, one of my specializations was to teach our people at DIA how to keep such information from being compromised even in the highest threat counter-intelligence environments (i.e. China). You may rest easy knowing I cannot be coerced into revealing that information, even under torture.

As far as I'm concerned there is no evidence that snowden isn't just a paid actor. Why should a spy get a peace prize anyway.

I think it's a good thing. I admire what Snowden did, I know would never have the guts to do that. I have grown to realize that being afraid of my government is becoming an acceptable way of living and I don"t think people can have those things that the original fighters for freedom in this land as a sovereign country held as unalienable human rights provided by our creator and held as the most important basis for the country they were fighting to separate from tyrannical rule and form based centrally on these beliefs

The ideals this country was founded upon are eroding away, realizing as I say this my own government could be sending a drone to take me out, or have me detained indefinitely just for speaking the truth.

At this point Snowden so far as I am aware has not provided any foreign country ally or foe, specific information regarding the content of the information the government has amassed due to it's spying of not only foe's but ally's and American Citizens (which used to be illegal)

I raise that USED TO BE point because our Constitution provides for 3 arms of the government in so much that no one branch has unchecked control, these arms are to create a system of checks and balances, the Judicial supposedly being the less politically motivated arm thus less subject to being corrupted by power, but such is no longer seemingly the case.

I remember a couple of reporters who discovered that the President of the United States was spying on other members of the government and other affronts to the office and responsibilities he was elected to uphold. In that situation the separation of powers did their job as the information was disclosed to the reporter's by a high level Member of a National Security group. He did his job but his identity remained secret for quite some time after.

This incident I am describing was known as Watergate.

The Nobel Committee could restore some measure of dignity and honor to the prize, if only it would.

Snowden, Manning or Assange are far more deserving of the prize than Obama and Kissinger.
