why not ask a chemical engineer what could be done to a body to water, after all that's what they said they were, from the op's link

The men told police they are chemical engineers and had graduated from the nearby University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
I can think of a whole bunch of things they could do and not one of then good, just seems odd that they would be there at that time of night. not only that but could there be a link? this and the Boston bombers, just seems odd that they are also students usnews.nbcnews.com... was there not talk of a group of "12 " a while back.

FBI probes report of Quabbin Reservoir intruders

I think it's very good that the cops, when faced with this as a middle of the night situation, took time to look into it a bit. I'd hope they'd do the same if it were a bunch of Chemical Engy grads with Anglo-Saxon surnames as well. Unless they are coming out stumbling drunk or playful to an extreme, at that time of night and location? I'd say curious is the least anyone in official positions ought to be.

Now, having said that? I DO wonder who thought it was a good idea to make a routine check into national news...as if their last names and origin make them Al Qaeda wanna-be's? Mr. Jones, Mr White and Ms. Brown from Gomer, North Dakota wouldn't play as well for headlines ..eh?

I think a REAL danger exists here that the real enemies who we've been in a 2-way fight with over 10 years now...don't have to use ethnic people for their dirty work. In fact, they'd be idiots to at this point. It's probably people like this story shows who are least likely to be a threat by just HOW stereotypical they come off. I'd hate to see a little platoon of McVeigh type converts under a new cause...get entirely missed...because the family of "terrorists" right behind them drew 100% of the attention because they came from a country on the "right" list.

ok what is wrong with this?; from your link

“MWRA operates a state-of-the-art, real-time monitoring system around the clock to ensure the safety of our water supply. Any abnormalities are detected immediately. As an extra precaution, water quality samples were analyzed at MWRA’s lab yesterday and all came back normal. There is no evidence of any water quality issues at the Quabbin Reservoir following the trespassing incident,” the MWRA said in a statement.

would that not by all reasoning mean today if it happened last night, and would it not be a last 2- 3 days before the test came back ? yes there is real time monitoring, but there are things that can be added that over time become time released poison, long after they are gone will not list what these are but one could find find on the web net just the same.

strange how fiction can become fact, was think about a short story about this , just a few days ago decide against it, and there is no on paper or text of it, just i my head.

I think this news article is particularly worrying considering the threat from radioactive substances and new viruses. I don't know though how much nuclear materials they would need to put in for that amount of water. I would test them for radiation sickness just to put my mind at ease. It is very suspicious circumstances indeed.

I agree but then the Racial profiling comes into play, can not have this seen as race nation factor , now if it was, say a white collage student ,bet it would be go to jail, no get out off jail card, and FIB asking all his her friend's what is their connection Dem Rep white supremacist, anti gov, groups, and now news of this.

I don't understand your point here? Is this a question to me about the testing being too early? I agree something strange and not right surrounds this trespassing incident.

good one but wrong way of thinking think more along the lines of "Bug" or Chemical/ Bio, one that needs not be put in the water, but along the bank, that works it way in to the water , rain off, or wave lapping action on the shore line. just one of the ways, this could be done.

not at you, but a question to ask , if this took place at 12:30 Tuesday night and the report says that day , should it not be Wednesday er today, would it be a few days for the test results to get back any way.

Oh, I think we agree. The Racial/Ethnic side is what I see the biggest problem with. Profiling makes sense in an airport and many other settings......when it's a combination of factors, where ethnic may be one of several...but your point about white and what I said is what bothers me on stories like this.

The Press themselves (bastions of telling us all how fair we're supposed to be) pick and choose what to blow into national stories ...largely on the basis of what they tell us, shouldn't matter.

Meanwhile..We have people like Jihad Johnny and Adam Gadahn that, given a few minutes work, would pass as anyone we stand in line with at the burger king or grocery store. I hope our nation never becomes SO focused on the traditional sources for threats that the adapting the enemy does, gets missed.

not necessarily missed but not report er news worthy, it is more of a head line when it is a foreign national, ie visa rather than a natural borne, even the name can have a bearing on the out come.

if they were white kids then they probably would be just getting a ticking off, but they are not....

Do Pakistanis and Saudi's go skinny dipping....Hmmmm.. suspicious to say the least. I think they may be a Terror Cell up to no good.

Frankly, I don't care WHAT nationality or ethnic group they belong. They broke the law at a state reserve. And as such they should be charged for that trespass, and investigated further if they are found to be foreign nationals here in this country on a VISA. If so, then a followup with ICE should be forthcoming to determine if they also broke the rules of their stay here.

Too often, far too often (IMO) the guests of this country (here on VISA or green cards) seem to be immune from the law due to the fear of the authorities being painted as being "racially motivated". Meanwhile, those American citizens, that break the same laws are held accountable without that fear. At least, that is how I perceive it here.

The second article I posted about the Bombing Range being there. The guy in the article taking about all the testing has a application for research at the site. And it seems they are tied to the University. The application ask if the restricted area they use for this research will be used at night? What is this guy letting people do out there?

Cholera maybe? Arsenic?

I found this little snippit on arsenic in water supplies when I was looking at a list of factsheets from WHO and it does not sound pretty!

Key facts Arsenic is naturally present at high levels in the groundwater of a number of countries. Arsenic is highly toxic in its inorganic form. Contaminated water used for drinking, food preparation and irrigation of food crops poses the greatest threat to public health from arsenic. Long-term exposure to arsenic from drinking-water and food can cause cancer and skin lesions. It has also been associated with developmental effects, cardiovascular disease, neurotoxicity and diabetes. The most important action in affected communities is the prevention of further exposure to arsenic by provision of a safe water supply.

And how much would you need to pollute 412,000,000,000 US gal?

Unless they were out there with semis carrying chemicals I can't see them trying to poison the water. But what kind of bombs and other items did the Army Core of Engineers bring out of the water at the bombing sites? And where did they store them? Was it near where these students were?

It's not just a big concrete bowl of water. It's a very large man-made lake, with reserved wildlife areas surrounding it. So, nighttime studies of nocturnal life would be a valid area of research. Even, night research on the water itself is valid in itself.

The question is, did these people that were detained have a filed and approved application to be there at the time. If not, then, they were breaking the laws and should be charged with that infraction.

True but they did say they were students. Why bring that up if they were not there as students? I know the cop should question them even if they say they are supposed to be there as students if he feels something does not seem right to him. If they were students why did they park outside the gate. That application shows where they should mark the number of keys needed to enter the gate? This is a strange case but I think digging is needed and not people jumping to conclusions.

EPA has set the arsenic standard for drinking water at .010 parts per million (10 parts per billion) to protect consumers served by public water systems from the effects of long-term, chronic exposure to arsenic. Water systems must comply with this standard by January 23, 2006, providing additional protection to an estimated 13 million Americans.

If there is 4120 us gallons of Arsenic in that water it would still be safe. I don't know how much they would need for it to be deadly. Did they have access to more then 4120 gallons of arsenic? I am sure they did not. No reports of semis.
