Scots are Brit's as well, It's the name of the island and doesn't stop at Hadrians wall.
If you want to discuss everyone else it would be helpful to say England, Wales, and N.Ireland, because Scotland is still part of the UK at the moment. They are not excluded from being Brits yet just because a percentage of them want to split away.

I mentioned earlier in the thread about asking the site owners about a seperate UK forum...

Link

If you are interested could you please leave a message of support and any other helpful comments.

How about a new 'UK issues' forum?

Thanks

September 2014 should be about the time the last UK owned barrel of oil comes out of the North Sea.

The countdown has begun. I wonder if the site owners could open up a new forum for the b!tch-slapping fest that is coming up.

The Scottish independence referendum will be held on 18 September 2014, First Minister Alex Salmond has said.

He revealed the date as draft legislation on holding the vote was brought before the Scottish Parliament.

Voters will be asked the yes/no question, "Should Scotland be an independent country?".

I'm mainly undecided on the matter, but I hope that the media will promote some fair discussion, but that's not too likey since they are almost all pro-union.

Things I couldn't give a toss about are currency, passports and border control...these are the things that give the media a big stiffy.

Oil as well, only an idiot thinks this will last forever. I will be good while it lasts, mind you.

What bothers me is that we are run by a party who nobody really votes for up here, going to war at the USAs whim, PFI and various failed public spending contracts costing billions, then ditched.
But will the media focus on that, no chance.

So let the games begin.

I live in Edinburgh, and at first I was unsure. My thinking is we may end up like Northern Ireland and the West of Scotland, a country full of hatred. As if it is a Yes, many, like in Northern Ireland would want to stay part of the crown (UK)
I think Salmond (Who is disliked across the board) actually played a blinder keeping Scotland in with the monarchy. This will keep the Unionist people happy, should a yes happen.

There will be blood shed over this vote, if you know Scotland as I do, you will know, the West especially is a hotbed of sectarianism. Celtic Vs Rangers it comes through. It is VILE!

Good topic.

TBH I hope Scotland does gain it's own independence, and furthermore changes it's currency.

I'm sick of all the Scottish £ notes that find their way into our English tills, and subsequently into our pockets that we then embarrassingly have to offload!

Bit of a nit pick no

If that is your only problem, then perhaps you should be more vigilant when inspecting your change.

Other countries sometimes have a worrkaround to this issue. I've really never understood why the English get their knickers in a twist about it.

Lighten up, only have a joke!

I don't see what Scotland has to gain nor lose from having it's own independence, besides having more of a platform to air it's opinions on the world stage.

This is where you are wrong.
We want OFF the world stage.
We give more to the UK than we get back.
Getting away from wars and paying for wars is a BIG issue I know many will vote on.

And the date of the vote was also good for Salmond. It will pluck on heart strings.
For me, 2 reasons.
1. Stay with David Cameron and his war machine.
2. Go alone, and we can. it been proven

Yes for me!!

My granny took her hatred of the Campbell's to the grave,
If any reasoning Scottish person knows our proud history, the vote will be yes.
If people vote for money reasons, then go down there and let us live alone and in PEACE !

Peace!

Sensing some hostility here towards the Scots who want independence.

It wont be a bed of roses for the English either -

Britain will lose nuclear capability for 20 years if Scotland votes for independence

I think this is something they can sort out. Us Scot's don't want these weapons.
If there is thoughts if a yes, they move Faslane and Rosyth down south. I can see one of them from my house.
I want it gone!

Total mistake, by the toad like Salmond.

Trying to create a legacy.

Just Say NO

Many of my country people want this.
Salmond can drive the bus to Yes, then we can choose OUR leader.
We can do it with peace and show the world how peace can be achieved through change.

Just say no? Why?
Are you Scottish or English?
My thinking does not go to Oil Fields or Weapons of War.
I want freedom from London and its rule.
I have English family and friends, before anyone goes up that road.

Just say Yes, then when your Health Service crashes and you need a bailout, turn to Germany and they will look for 40% levy on all your citizens savings.

Guesswork will do nobody any good here.
We GIVE MORE! to the UK than we get back.
Time to step away. And our health service will be just fine.
If not, on what grounds do you say this?

If Scotland could free itself from the Westminster backed PFI contracts, I'd be more worried about the state of the English NHS, if I were you.

And the union did come about via a bailout by England...Germany/England...what's the difference ( at least we might get better at football).

hahahahaha @ Better at Football.
This is a MUST for me. Friday was shocking!! lol

I am Scottish! My Ex is English my kids live in England.
I have lived there for 13 years before i moved home a month ago.

Below is just one reason for my NO to Independence stance.
I can and will give more reasons later.

We are only a few miles apart by the sounds of it
I live 8 miles from Helensburgh.

Basing an economy on oil is a fools errand , basing an economy on declining peak oil
is utter stupidity, so why is Salmond floating this.... To LIE to the Scottish people.
Many have no idea of such things,They will take Salmonds word for it, and some go along with the lie
because it suits their agenda. and some of the less than traveled just hate England for the sake of it.

Alex Salmond’s repeated claims that an independent Scotland would be financially stable have been shredded by his own Finance Secretary, who has secretly raised the prospect of public spending cuts, lower pensions and benefits, and high levels of debt. In a leaked Scottish Cabinet paper, John Swinney privately admitted for the first time what opponents have long been warning of — that revenues from North Sea oil are on the decline and cannot be relied upon to keep public spending in Scotland at present levels.
The paper also revealed that in 2016/17, the SNP’s projected first year of independence, the rising

Could you please add more to the source of your story.

Since it is paywalled, I can't see any more than you have quoted.

One paragraph and a chopped off sentence isn't much of a source.

Here's why i want independence....Nothing to do with oil though we will need the income generated for our first few years as a fledgling nation, but this is why i will be Voting yes...

1, Nukes...Get them from my soil.
2, Never again will we be Ruled Buy a Conservative Party
3, we must never again be dragged into illegal wars...get the Boys back home now...lets downsize our fighting force, we are under no threat from anyone. in fact i would go as far as saying America is more of a threat to us than Al Qaeda.
4, we get to control our own fishing rights and taxation..

And Last but not least..
5, Bow Hunting must be made legal, we have an abundance of large game up here, add to that the beautiful scenery and we have a winner, so lets open up another avenue to maximise our income....we can attract hunters from around the world to the highlands for a spot of Red Deer hunting...The hills and mountains are Crawling in the beasties, so much so they were thinking of introducing wolves to get the numbers down...Say Aye tae Independence, Say Aye Tae Bow Hunting.

Oh, nearly forgot...Free prescription Wellies for all...

I respect anyone's opinions and thinking.
It creates good debate.

I think we all know, Scotland puts more into the UK than it gets back.
Across the board.

I think we will all have our reasons and opinions.
Come vote time, be it yes or no, we will all have to accept the verdict.
I am no fan of Salmond. But lets get there and choose a leader of our own.
To many are thinking outside the box, thinking Salmond will be the leader for all of time.
The way I see it is, should we become independent, we have an election.
Then, maybe we won't have a liar.

Good debate...
I am 100 miles from you. I am nearer the East Coast and A1.

How so... I am intrigued to just how you got to this, because Nicola Sturgeon has been crowing about this, but I've yet to see how exactly she has come up with this figure...

Please, break it down for me, exactly...

Well, I already knew the answer but wanted someone who had clearly taking what that Hag Sturgeon had said as gospel to explain to me, rather than just parrot what she said without checking the figures......

Note, her colleague, John Swinney MSP (the SNP Secretary for Finance) raised concerns this week about the need to make spending cuts, raise taxes etc as Scotland cannot afford it's current expenditure if it went independent. The SNP came out with the "We pay more than we get line" straight away, without actually checking to see if it was accurate in the hope that people wouldn't check....

The problem is, every time the money argument comes up, the SNP assume that all revenue collected by HM Treasury from the North Sea is "Scottish". This is patently false, as almost 50% of the gas/oil fields reside in "English" waters...
