Could this be the Nuclear Test we've been waiting for? If I recall, the last two nuclear tests were identified as an artificial earthquake. Also, it appears that North Korea has threatened to launch long-range rockets as well. Looks like things are sitting up on the Korean Peninsula.

Interesting times indeed.

Could be. It's breaking news on CNN right now - no article to link to yet. Will update when they release an article. I wonder how big it was?

Here's a small article from wral.com here
USGS Reports 4.9 quake. Nuclear North Korea eh? Not good.

I guess my question is, how do they know if it's an artificial earthquake?

The issue here is not the magnitude of the quake, the issue is that the quake was originiated by an underground nuclear test blast.

Gotta hand it to the North Koreans....

They mean what they say and say what they mean.

Kim Jong Un said a test was coming and here it is.

Is it just me, or is a man made explosion that registers as a 4.8 probably something pretty big.
Nuclear accident, or successful nuclear test?

Will be intersting to see how the test went. That might be a game changer.

An accident would mean it didn't explode.. I call successful test..

On the plots explosions don't have a ramp up to the wave.. They just start off at 4.9 or whatever they are saying it is.. That's how you tell if it's a quake of not.

Just GREAT! Unreal.

South Korea is giving AID in the form of FOOD for starving North Korea.

If this is a Nuclear Test...and it probably is...South Korea will stop AID shipments.

North Korea will throw a temper tantrum and start shelling some South Korean Island or town.

If that happens South Korea has already warned North Korea it will strike back this time.

If that happens you can BET the North will strike back even harder.

If THAT happens the U.S. will probably get involved.

If THAT HAPPENS...China will get all pissed off and make threats.

IF THAT HAPPENS...North Korea will be enbolden and be even more Militarily Agressive.

If...that happens...the United States will have to make a choice...one no one will like.

Me thinks if we see more of these with more frequency, we can RULE OUT accidents.

my guess would be that it set off sensors nearby but that sensors further away didnt experience the type of movement they should have because its superficial movement (you dont have one plate moving against another which would create kind of a ripple effect)
completely ignorant as to how they would go about that but that my guess

Here is a link to the Google Maps (Satellite) of the area of the earthquake. This is approximated, but relatively close. Do they have some sort of underground bunker in the area? Or was it a surface detonation?

Oops...looks like another piece of Korean hardware detonated prematurely. I hope the technician was nearby - I mean...
