I just came across this interesting International Patent which was filed in 2003 and published 17-1-2013. Hand held pistol or rifle lightning guns could really heat up the gun control debate.

The inventer is a DAVID JOSEPH SCHULTE and the invention is described as -

Concept and model for utilizing high-frequency or radar or microwave producing or emitting devices to produce, effect, create or induce lightning or lightspeed or visible to naked eye electromagnetic pulse or pulses, acoustic or ultrasonic shockwaves or booms in the air, space, enclosed, or upon any object or mass, to be used solely or as part of a system, platform or device including weaponry and weather modification

Description of US2013015260 (A1)

He claims to have discovered the true cause of lightning and thunder and that nothing like this has ever been devised and therefore there are no other related patent applications.

In this patent application, I am describing a pair of identical devices which are capable of causing nearly instantaneous electromagnetic pulse (EMP, lightning) and "Ultrasonic boom" (acoustic shockwave, thunder) upon any object or in free air or space. The EMP would be in the form of hundreds of millions of volts of electricity. The system can produce multiple and continuous electromagnetic pulses (literally lightning) with concurrent Ultrasonic booms on a scale larger and more powerful than nature.

Now maybe this is legit but if so I hope he has something more than the drawings he submitted with his patent application if he wants to sell it because they look like something a five year old drew.

So he has discovered the true cause of lightning and thunder. AND????

Thunder is caused by lightning, which is essentially a stream of electrons flowing between or within clouds, or between a cloud and the ground.

Two of the same elements, I suspect this guy is just BS'in

this wouldn't heat up gun control one bit
if valid
it would be suppressed under national security
one may add
they already have microwave guns...black governments have some pretty far out stuff that is off limits to the private sector
all this would do is add to unfair advantage battlefield tactics

The situation reminds me of the Dread gun. The concept went public, with several videos, and now it's disappeared. Even the patent link is missing.
It was discussed here on ATS quite a while back, and haven't heard anything more about it. The video here is total 80's cheesy style, but rest assured it is a real concept. You can read more technical info at Defense Review, Janes (if you have an account).

You realize that anyone can fill out a patent form for about pretty much anything right?

There are tons of patents for a lot of things and most of them don't work.
Do a google search, there are many lightning guns that have already been produced.

You make sound as easy posting a letter. While it is true that most patents filed are not followed through, at a minimum, it will cost you $10k-$15k just for the drafting and applying. Then there will be further legal fees during the search process. If the patent is granted then you need to pay initial fees of $5k-$10k for every country you wish to file the patent and then maintenance fees to maintain it..

This particular patent being discussed has been granted, filed internationally and protected for the past 10 years. It would be extremely rare for someone to continue protecting their IP on an invention idea that has been shelved. .

Where are you getting your information? LOL Not sure about Europe (where the Doc comes from) Try the real site next time...
www.uspto.gov...

An idea patent is $125 PERIOD...

It depends on the patent and the amount of time it is covered. But yeah you can pay a small fee and get a patent for nutty things...

Besides the Gub already invented and tested one recently

LOL yourself. If you had cared to actually read before refuting me with an irrelevant response you would realise that we are not talking about a $125 idea patent which isn't worth the paper its written on. It is an international patent that was filed in 2003 , has a priority date of 2004-10-07 and was published last week. So to put it simply, someone has spent a lot of money maintaining this IP and it would have to date cost more like $125,000 than $125. But what would I know.

Re-Read Statement [0002] As of Oct. 1, 2003 there has been no Federally nor State sponsored research or development on this device or the technology. Federal "SBIR" Small Business Innovation Research grants were applied for but were not granted.

So since 2003 No one has been interested in this spectacular invention? 10 YEARS??? Nothing has been built... No prototype not even much of description.

Here is the same patent with pictures that really don't show anything
www.faqs.org...

Like I said the Military already has a lightning gun.

Now show me the link where you prove that $125,000 was spent on this. Not only that this is a theory or a concept as the so called inventor states "several bona fide physics discoveries"

So basically he made discoveries no one else in physics has? I am sorry but I don't believe this.

The fees for this sort of filing are not that bad. You could file and get an examination for about $2k. Just filing, about $115.

How something like this relates to the efforts by the US government to restrict rights is most interesting.

As the 2nd amendment secures the right to keep and bear arms, and the life constantly say the founders never envisioned guns carrying 30 or more rounds capable to firing 100 bullets per minute, what would happen if the military perfected some type of pulse disruptor or phaser rifle?

You can bet they say that isn't even a gun so it doesn't apply.

Lookup Boeing Space Fence. Said to use this technology after Schulte invented it.

A two year old zombie thread?

BTW, it's a patent application, not a patent.

This application by Schulte was officially granted a patent in 2014. It appears that all claims Schulte asked for were granted by USPTO. What I find odd, is that this application was mysteriously held up for over 10 years by USPTO. Filing date was in 2004.

I don't suppose you can provide the patent number. I can't seem to locate it.
The only patent which seems to have been issued to Schulte are these. Which do not seem to be very practical.

Yes, I know. I provided that link.

That is not the patent for a "lightning gun." It's a rather silly idea equating microwaves from various transmitters to an EMP. He wants to point some radar transmitters at stuff from different directions and incapacitate them.

But the applications can.
That makes no sense.
