Read the post above yours for the root of the problem. We don't equate guns with freedom. Guns are a last resort, check and balance, built into our system, dare I say Constitution, to keep the government "by the people, for the people". Get it right.

We don't blame anyone for drugs. We find where they come from, and attempt to enforce the laws ourselves.

Unfortunately you won't get much sympathy here because the gun psychos wouldn't care if every person in every other country on the planet died from guns, they would still refuse any efforts to reduce gun atrocities- no matter how necessary or reasonable.

Well, I re-read it and though eloquent, it still comes up the same. Giving up guns is giving up your freedoms, symbolically and literally.

You do understand that guns are banned in Mexico right? Its the illegal guns that are causing all the trouble. Everyone wants to bash American for having guns. How many coutries has we bailed out with the blood of our young men and women?

You do realize that Mexico has a ban on anything other than small-calibre, magazine-less weapons........right? This gives the drug cartels, with their assault weapons (pulled directly out of the US Army MTOE, no less) supplied by the American ATF, carte blanche to do whatever they want. An armed citizenry is the only type capable of defending itself from both the powers of tyranny and the pillaging of criminal groups who procure their armaments, whatever they may be, by illegal and unregistered means. Taking guns away from law-abiding citizens in America would do nothing besides leave the average, law-abiding citizen completely vulnerable and without defense. Still think the police are there to protect you? Well, just for the sake of the argument, let's just say that someone breaks into your house, and by some miracle you get to the phone in time and call the police. The police would be there just in time to put you in a body-bag as they always show up late. It is physically impossible for the police to protect you in a life/death situation if you do not possess the means with which to protect yourself, as the only means of protection they offer is a half-baked preventative measure. In other words, especially in the States, if you are not armed, you're pretty much ripe for the taking.

No.. wrong. Gun advocates support any actual effort to curb these atrocities. It's just that making guns illegal doesn't do a thing. The hollywood shoot out, columbine, both under an assault weapons ban. Law abiding citizens shouldn't be punished because the government wants to try an illogical experiment. So what if they took away every single gun and you still have these mass killings? Then do they say "oops sorry, here are all your arms back?" NO. Because it's not about stopping violence. I would applaud them if they actually started getting mental health checks for people while they were still in school, and by making schools and places they don't allow guns safer.

But you guys on the left always want to take the easy way out. It's an agenda of bias, you say you want to do it for one reason, but it's not the truth at all. You don't like guns, but if you actually thought about the problem using your brain you would see that taking them doesn't solve anything and it does leave the country (one that is getting more and more authoritarian i might add) completely disarmed.

I thought mental health checks for gun purchases were a good idea too, until I realized that it will most probably lead to "mental health checks" prior to job interviews, loans, etc... it could become a slippery slope. I have mixed feelings about it.
Criminals/Mentally ill, will commit crimes, regardless of mental health checks, or gun availability. I would like to be able to defend myself from THOSE people. I am glad this one only had a cell phone.
