I've read so many time here that the UK has such a low gun crime statistic compared to America.
Could this be the reason?

Come to find out the guy that tried to rob us was a 22 year old boy who actually went to school with one of my kids. The vehicle he was in belonged to his mother, and he had sneaked off in it without her permission. His mother gave him two options: either go to drug rehab or she would press charges on him herself for unlawful use of her vehicle. He chose rehab and was escorted there by by uncle and another officer. I wish him luck and hope that he gets his life together!

Who knows, not only did you spare his life that night...you might have just saved his life in the future. I know rehab has a pretty low sucess rate, but who knows? What you did that night might have been the best thing to ever happen to that kid.

Wouldn't it be awesome if like in 5 years you get a knock on your door and it's him come to apologize and thank you for paving the way to his success in life?

next time,let them take the tools and stay in the house ,just let your dog out to protect your property,in fact get another one or two dogs,and feed them theif as often as you can.

Its your inborn right to protect your life and the lives of your family or others,property is not a valid reason to kill a person,so next time sit in your rocker with your rifle sights on the guy through your window and contemplate his fate--hopefully you are not having a bad day and you let him live if he touches your window or door.
You are more important then tools,tell your husband to double check his insurance policy and to build himself a dog run connected to his garage like I have and put two rottys inside it.They are very quiet when trained right and you will hear a prowler scream before you hear your dogs bark.I also store their food in the garage and keep em hungry,ha ha ha ha.

Its way easier getting out of your dog biting someone a few times than it is to explaining why you took their head off with a rifle ,and a lot safer for you and your family-----all guns have done is put good dogs in the unemployment line,after all they are supposed to be doing a job.When I lived in a city I had a Rotty with me on every trip to the cornerstore or early evening jog,I never felt I needed a gun. And I was given LOTS of room all the time --everywhere when he was with me.And no NO ONE EVER petted or touched him when he was on the job with me.

No more Rambo moves,guns are for self-protection and hunting,when you left your house you became a hunter not a defensive citizen.Its better I tell you this than a judge,the last thing your Hubby needs is to be coming home early from work to bail you out of jail on a manslaughter charge you got for protecting his tools.

On the other hand if your dog gets to feast on thief ,you might get a little press coverage and be able to stud that sucker out for a few bucks if you are on the ball.

Good move, you can't count on the police to keep you safe or protect the loss of your property. They'll come by after and wipe up any mess, sure, if that's what you need. I would also only ever use a firearm to defuse a situation rather than complicate it. In your situation the gun didn't really even need to be loaded.

That is exactly why I own guns as well. And ammo. Lots of ammo.

You were right not to shoot him, though. Kinda hard to explain self-defense when your perp's arms were loaded with goodies. The only thing I might have done differently would be to hold him til the police got there.

I just think gun owners our too dramatic. Banning assault weapons/semi automatic weapons is not banning handguns or your hunting rifles. I mean really, what's the purpose of owning a semi automatic rifle or hand gun? It's clearly the popular choice for mass shootings.

What's the point of making cars that can do 0-60 in 3 seconds or top speeds greater than 75 MPH? Why are people allowed to put 44" mud tires on their trucks, 33" should be enough, who would ever have a use for that? Why allow people to buy more than a six-pack of beer per day? Who needs to drink that much anyway? New York has already started down that path with their large soda ban... I'm not a fan of soda, but I think that whole situation is pretty ridiculous.

It's called freedom of choice my friend. Something that once made America great - unfortunately we are slowly losing this. We need to hold individuals responsible and not objects. Why should 100+ million responsible gun owners be punished because of a handful of crazy people? Even though cars kill more people than guns in America, you don't see any push for crazy restrictions on them...

There are approx 2 million uses of a gun for self defense every year, and I bet that semi-auto handguns are the popular choice for that task - much more popular than for mass shootings. In the last 6 years there have been about 25 mass shootings - that's about 4 per year, hardly an epidemic.
