Thanks for your kind and informative reply.

IIRC, the issue of water lubricating faults is beyond theory.

I don't know that they understand lots of details about it but it seems to me there's been some studies documenting that . . .

right, experts?

I'm keeping my eye on the Taiwan region. These began a little over 3 hours ago, and are striking me as perhaps fore-shocks.

I don't recall seeing this kind of activity in this region on a regular basis. Hopefully it's just a swarm that passes without incident, but you never know.

Sheesh, what did you do, PM?
Earthquakes are popping all over. This most recent one in Japan has me raising an eyebrow. Too close to Sendai for my liking.

I think I would be more concerned about a nearly Mag 6 so close to Fukushima maybe! USGS 5.7 mb (5.97 Mw converted) bless their little cotton socks which is, as EMSC say, 5.9 Mw and just 120 km from the site.

The "swarm" (since there doesn't seem to be a big main shock) northeast of Taiwan are probably related to the 5.8m off the southeast tip of the island.

Clusters. But that's only what I think. Because that's all I know. Feast or famine.

Don't shoot the messenger but the press in India and southeast Asia are fixated on the recent Iranian/Pakistani quake. So, here's the inevitable question. Are there more earthquakes these days?

Actually, the article is tame and just rehashes the USGS's numbers.

timesofindia.indiatimes.com...

Oklahoma is still experiencing "aftershocks".

Whilst checking out other things I noticed that the QVSData Australian GeoScience import has stopped working.

This because the Aussies thing that utctime=04:08:54.3.6 is a valid time. Well they are Australian and who knows how their times work??

I already have a bunch of stuff in the program to try and sort out the weird times that come through, but looks as if I shall have to write some more stuff.

Update soon.

Moar!

OMG the joys of interfacing with disparate systems around the world. Just discovered that the USGS have changed the format of the file which I use for the RED feature in the program. Australia is sorted, now for USGS...........

I don't know of a specific earthquake mapping site that shows that area but USGS does report them. I notice them when I see the USGS interactive map reporting something like this:

M2.5+ events in the past 7 days
-257 earthquakes
-256 meet criteria
located in map area
-256 displayed
based on sort order

I usually scroll the map up and find the missing quake. The missing quake from today is in the Arctic Circle: M4.6 - North of Franz Josef Land 2013-04-12 03:47:15 UTC

Hi, welcome!
I saw your post yesterday but was having trouble with the internet.
The problem was with my provider & it was down for 12 hours.
Now when I went to post, I lost ATS for a little while! Hmmm....
I figured you would have had lots of replies by now.
It has been pretty qu... around here lately. Not going to say it & tempt fate!!!

Anyhoo, I just zoom in on the North Pole on USGS's world map.

earthquake.usgs.gov...

Then you can zoom in more, but only in 10 degree increments!
But that will show fault lines too.
I tried to search the archives putting in latitude & longitude, but had trouble with it for some reason!

earthquake.usgs.gov...

I'm fairly new to eqs, so maybe someone else will have a link that shows everything better!

There was one there on April 12:
earthquake.usgs.gov...

I've only been watching quakes for 2 or 3 years, but didn't notice very many there.
There was one after Christmas, I believe, that was listed as North Pole.
I do remember commenting about that one!

What are you expecting???
On TV last night they were calling this 'devil's week'! I couldn't believe I heard it right!
It was because of all the bombings, shootings & things that have happened before,
during this same time period! They forgot to mention the BP oil spill though!
I guess that would be more like a 10 day time frame though!
Last year there were the two 8's in Indonesia too!

And it turns out that this area was predicted to have an earthquake 3 months prior to the event.

Bo, there are a plethora of scholarly articles that deal with fault lubrication.

There does indeed seem to be a correlation to this phenomena, whether it be man made or natural.

There is a reason for that, this was the biggest quake in the area in 1000 years
can't link to the source as its printed on paper, page B2 Dominion Post April18 2013

Seiesmolgist Roger Bilham (USGS) , who recently visited the area, said "This is certainly the largest magnitude earthquake in this particular region since the invention of the seismometer in 1900 and is probably the largest felt in recorded history - that is to say the last 1000 years"

edit on 17-4-2013 by muzzy because: I expect at least 3 stars for this post, having typed it with my 2 big fingers rather than copy/paste

I take "this particular region" to mean the Khash/Saravan area, as I have a Mag 8 off the coast in 1945
