The mom in me wants to keep all four of my boys home, but I know there is no convincing my hubby of such a thing. Mr. Logical is hard to convince that fear based behavior is a good idea. The school is literally right behind my house. The school field/yard backs up to the green space and soccer fields that is right behind our back fence. Not that being closer helps in a situation where someone is trying to hurt children, but at the same time I feel the chance of something like this happening widespread is unlikely at best.

I worry more about the drivers on the road. I read somewhere that something like 70 people die every day in auto related accidents. Presumably this includes children, babies, mothers, fathers, ect... Yet we still take the risk and drive every day because we feel the risk is something we can control a little bit more than some nutjob walking into a school and killing innocent children. I am honestly torn about this entire thing and wonder if we are too busy trying to treat symptoms of a sick society. We run and hide, try to ban weapons, and make laws, but in the end I can't help but think we need to be looking at the other end of the spectrum here. Of course there are mental diseases that do not present until later in life, but how many times do we dismiss behavior of kids, of bullies, of the abused, ect... We need to get better into the heads of kids as they grow up so we can steer them better. Maybe we need stronger parenting, maybe people need to be taught how to parent. I always thought of parenting as an instinctual thing, but really it has to be a very well thought out and logical plan. Loving our kids is fine, but we need to look at ourselves as teachers instead. We live in a sick society that is in dire need of a reboot of sorts.

I am under the weather but ffs, I can't wait until all this speculation, paranoia, and nonsense is out the window.

I couldn't agree more!! *actually, I am under the weather too lol, with food poisoning* I will be glad when the 22nd gets here and we can be done with all this nonsense. I worry more about nutty people or religious nutjobs out there than I do the date. The world is not going to end, but those who may believe it is seem unstable to me.

I completely agree, if nothing else start an early holiday break. While copycats scare me a lot, what scares me most are people who will attempt to be innovative. A local news outlet here had some "expert" on about how easy it was to make molotov cocktails. Thanks for letting people know who might not know otherwise.

My son is only 6 months old, so no school, but he and my wife will be staying inside, in the backyard, or directly in front of the house, all the while surrounded by 3 large, fiercely loyal canine defenders. Me, I'll be at work, keyed into any funny business (crazy people, riots, fake alien invasions, etc.), with a full tank of gas in a heavy-duty off-road vehicle. I'll be home 15-20 minutes after anything stupid starts happening.

That said, we're planning the same not just fir 12/21, but for 12/20. After-all, if you want to go on a rampage "before TEOTW", you need to do it BEFORE the magical burst of energy from the galactic core (you know, because we're not going to align with the galactic plane, but if you're stupid, you believe we are.)

I agree OP, but if people have school aged children, KEEP THEM HOME!!!!!

Most kids in the USA will be in school, it will be the last day of school this year and won't start again untill Wednesday, January 2, 2013. If my children were still of school age, I would just keep them home that day. Why wait for the authorities to decide if it's safe for my kids when I feel it isn't. Besides, what's one missed day at the end of the year?

Here's a video I just watched. Very informative from a scientific view of what to expect. I would urge everyone to watch this in its entirety. WOW! JUST, WOW!

Can't get the video to work. Here's a link to You Tube:

Hello everyone, I am sure everyone is getting increasingly aware of all the shootings that have been going on all over the country this last week leading up to the 21st(end of the world blah blah blah). Now as everyone is not also aware of is copy cat shooters, people who mimic or even try to outdo what someone else did to get equal the infamy. Now to the threads title.

I strongly value education, but this being said, people have gone NUTS! I have a feeling what will come this week will make the elementary school shooting look like a bruised knee or a paper cut. Now if the end of the world was supposed to end on Friday, when do you think copycat shooters will most likely try to outdo their instigator. Friday. My prediction is of several or even a dozen of these shootings on this day. I think you would be stupid to even let your kids go to school this week with all the nut jobs out their.

Do you agree with me that we should not have school this Friday to thwart any huge plans of murder? or do you think Sandy Hook is it?

Thank you.

My feeling is that the day you let fear decide for you, you have already up your freedom of choice.

The media wants Americans freaking out over this, otherwise there wouldn't be 24/7 discussions on every major news outlet.

The government wants you freaking out over this. The gunmen/perpetrators want you freaking out over this.

You are playing into the exact mentality they are steering you in. Next you will be agreeing that we should all give up our guns or agree to martial law "until all this craziness ends".

Yes, what happened is a true American tragedy. But, no, I'm not changing my way of life over it.

I think you're being a little too hard here...come on, man, soften up a little. It's okay. This isn't changing your lifestyle or giving up your freedoms by choosing to keep children home on one day because of mass hysteria over Dec. 21. It's simply logical and in your child's best interest. The choice to avoid the off-chance that something will likely occur is just being smart for your child's safety, especially in light of what just happened in CT. I applaud anyone who chooses to keep their kids home on that one day. If my children were school age yet, they'd be staying home, and not because I believe the world is going to end (I don't), but because I believe that too many people are on edge over this whole thing, so why take a chance? And about the media...I don't think they want America freaking out over this because of Dec. 21, they have actually been very quiet about the end of the world thing, barely making any mentions about the date and any other things that lead people to believe the end is near. No, if the media wants America to freak out it's for the gun control agenda, and that's it. But, even still, this is one of the most tragic things to happen to America since 9/11 so why wouldn't they have constant coverage. It's what the viewers want. I haven't sensed this gloomy mood that's settled over America since 9/11, and it's kind of bad timing that its just days away from Dec. 21, which is all the more reason to keep them home. Remember right after 9/11, Americans were afraid of another terrorist attack, now we're afraid of another Newtown attack! There's nothing wrong with softening up a bit. It's for the children's sake. I agree with you OP, schools should be closed, why take a chance on another one of these unimaginable events?

My daughter will be staying home along with a lot of kids in her school. Right before the CT shooting we had a kid at her school tweet that he was going to kill everyone at school on the 21st if the world didn't end.. The High School she goes to took it seriously. Although they said it was a prank they have taken measures to ensure safety, especially after the CT shooting. Every day there has been a few constables parked around the school..but its not enough for me. She will be home that day.

I could be wrong, but ai believe that's the video thatbsays we're crossing the galactic plane on 12/21. That may be true, but if so, the year is off by at least 30 million years. Ergo, bunk video.

Not sure about all schools but most are out for Christmas break by then.
My kids are at least, but if they were not I would be keeping them home anyway that day!!!
I can't wait until 12/21/12 is over, it becomes consuming sometimes.................
and puts my brain into overdrive, which can be good or bad.........

That is fricken genius! Seriously, so simple but would ensure the safety of so many teachers and students. I would call a local news station and get that word out. Worse case scenario, kids and teachers will get a day off. Best case? I don't even want to go there, but really it's a GREAT IDEA. I'm sure some parents would be put into a tight situation, but it could very well be worth it. If we can avoid another tragic situation from being possible, just do it.

My kids start their Christmas vacation on Friday, so good timing there! My husband is taking off work, not because we believe the world will end, but because so many OTHERS do. Too many nuts lately and it seems to be getting worse the closer we get to Friday. I told him you never know, some lunatic might get out of his car during rush hour and spray cars with bullets. These days, you never know, better safe than sorry

Not sending your child to school for fear of a shooting is giving up the sacred right of education of your child for fear. Fear is what these killers spread, to give up the right to Education for fear of a shooting is as pathetic as giving up liberty for security in relation to the past terrorist events.

Some student at my school today got arrested for carrying a gun to school. There has also been a school shooting threat. Our principal has addressed this, and we've been taking extra security precaution this week. For example, the orchestra door to the outside that is usually unlocked is now locked and people must open the door to let the music tutors in that come throughout the day.

Some man also got arrested for threatening to kill students at a nearby elementary school and also set his wife on fire when she's asleep. He had quite a few weapons on him.
