I would put money that the military already has a weapon that can shoot a laser from space.

Death Star budget proposal: $936squazillion.

Congress approves budget, construction starts.

1/3 into construction, budget revised to $152heptasquazillion.

Congress approves budget increases, raises taxes.

2/3 into construction, budget revised upward to $921holyhellazillion

Congress kills project. Death star looks just like that picture when it is mothballed.
