THIS. I used to work at one of the major talent agencies in LA (huge lit department) -- writers know they are selling a product, and the good ones have a decent sense for the pulse of their audience at large. They are aware that there are a lot of new age movements/ conspiracy theorists/ end-of-earthers out there, or at least that it is a timely topic given the state of our collective consciousness. Of course they are going to write movies that jive with current cultural obsessions and play of of current fears. You wouldn't believe the number of movies similar to those on the OP's list that didn't get made. It's not that the "Hollywood elite" are aware of something that you aren't and are dropping hits about it -- they know how to monetize cultural obsessions and anxieties.
