Can anybody shed some light on this image I do not know anything much about it. There does not seem to be that much on the net about it. I am aware that the vatican has many hidden secrets. It is meant to be the Virgin Mary at the Tomb of her son. It does look like some kind of UFO in the background.

It is part of the Vatican and Wood Reliquary Box riproducela VergineMariadavanti the tomb of his son and a strange flying object whose shape is very similar to modern UFO

Here's what I got .

This image depicts Mary at the tomb of Jesus. It is one of a series of images from the "Relinquary Box" which contains stones from holy sites of Palestine. Dated 6th-7th C. Located at Biblioteca, Vatican. Notice the dome shaped object above the tomb. If it is a building why is it hovering? Also, what is the round object on top?

Hard to see any details on that. It's funny when you click on the link of an image and get a smaller view of the image. "Would you like to see a thumbnail?"

I'll keep looking shortly. No time right now. I have no doubt our ancestors also saw things they couldn't explain in the sky, though... but if this Vatican artifact showed such a thing, I'd think they'd either have an explanation, or they wouldn't show it to us.

A temple that hovers over your bed and shoots a light into your head. the trees and cliff face show it is not on the ground.

because it is a painting and not a photograph.

Artistic styles change constantly and this is just an example of that, I see no reference in the bible talking about a space craft hovering outside the tomb sy why would they paint one?

It could be less of a hovering, and more of a "I refuse to put in all the grass and stuff that make up the hill the building is sitting on, but you get the idea." Showing the temple, showing the path to the temple... but not showing the hill...or the area beside the path...

It is not a temple, at least not a terrestrial one, the whole circular shape is visible, it has to be off the ground to make sense. I don't see the need for artistic license in this depiction.

Here's what I've found about this... roughly translated from Italian:

This small sacred image, dated between the sixth and tenth centuries and is part of a composition of various scenes from the life of Christ, is the arrival of the "pious women" at the tomb of Christ.

The number and names of the women vary in different gospels: Mary Magdalene and the other Mary Matthew, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary of James Luke, Mary Magdalene, Mary of James, and Salome, according to Mark, the only Magdalene seconds John. In this painting, however, those who approach the tomb is Mary the mother of Jesus (you can see the stars on the mantle), which makes us think of an apocryphal origin of the story. An apocryphal gospel in which Mary to go to the tomb of Jesus is that of Gamaliel, the sixth century.
In all the stories, however, women find the empty tomb, guarded by an angel who tells them not to despair because Jesus is risen.

Although this appears in many sites UFO "Saucer at the tomb of Jesus," reads a web page (www.bibleufo.com...), and "Notice the dome shaped object above the tomb. if it is a building why is it hovering? Also, what is the round object on top? "reads another (www.marsearthconnection.com...).

Instead, it is one of the very few pieces of the original appearance of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem ("Monks in arms, Sacred architecture of the Templars through the Mediterranean", 1995, p. 69-71). The holy place before the destruction wrought by the Sultan Hachim in 1009 and subsequent reconstructions, was composed of a newsstand supported by six columns, which was inside a building surmounted by a dome. Below the dome of the Holy Sepulchre in particular by printing the beginning of the XVI century and a photo of the 1958 Elia Kahvedjian:

Conclusion:

In the icon depicting "Mary at the tomb of Jesus" there is no UFO. The round object upon the tomb is the dome of the original Holy Sepulcher building in Jerusalem.

From the perspective i'm looking at it from it appears to be in the background with a path leading up to it, i could look at it as floating as you have but that's not rational thinking in my opinion. How do you explain floating trees next to it if it's floating?

It was just that i was seeing that the dome looked like it was seperate from the building below... I never said the trees were floating... They might just have been tall trees..

I was just curious tis all...

But after seeing elevenaugust's post thats cleared it all up - and this is why i love ATS..!

Try this site. Not all of it is translated into English, but a poster above me has done some of the work.

www.sprezzatura.it...

For any medieval artwork that seems to show a UFO, this is really the first site to go to as they actually detail the history behind the artwork and put it into context around both the subject and the various styles of the day - easier than thinking all these priests/bishops/popes would commission artists to paint ETs.........

I love the subject of ufo's but it's statements like the two that you've made here that make people that are not into this subject think that we are all wacko crazy people
