Okay, I tossed together an Animation Tutorial for Gimp.

The tutorial is about making a lizard run across the Avatar space, but it covers the essentials of animating in Gimp.

Who's the first to put this lil guy into their avatar spot, for a trial run?

I can't, because of the wink effect right now, and I don't want to change it ATM. I am curious to see how it looks, and it'll work for anyone using a background image and a transparent avatar.

Looks great! What do you think?[ Let me know when you want him back, I take off, no problem.

Nice! Ties in with the sand dunes in the background.

There's no reason to give him back. Just switch when you get tired of it.

Thanks for letting me see how he looks, and yes, the effect is "what was that?"

Ok Thanks!
the sand dunes as you call them are actually a rock formation, of Schist, hence my name
I will enjoy him skittering across my background.

Photoshop Gif animations however limited their gradients and pixelation.

Hi Agarta that's excellent, and I feel really bad asking but yes could you tone those down by a bit, 30-40%

Other than that it's perfect and I can't wait to use it.

---

Next problem is how do I get it set up on my profile? Yesterday I tried pasting the ATS URL of the previous image into the box in my profile for practice but nothing happened. I'm currently on an ipad (will get to a mac soon) and haven't found a way to upload a saved image from the ipad to ATS.

Once again I really appreciate your efforts and those of the rest of the team in helping create the best avatars anywhere on the net.

The following are step by step directions on how to set your new Avatar, Background, and/or Signature image. There are glitches that occur if some things are done out of order and you have not had an Avatar set already.

Avatar and Background

    1. Between these lines is a transparent Avatar. If you are using a new background, highlight it and click to save to your computer.

or copy the following code: h ttp://files.abovetopsecret.com/files/img/ut4e7bd94d.gif

    2. On the top Navigation bar of your page click the "Tools" tab found here(note: if you are using the Clear Avatar code scroll down to the Avatar section and paste it into the slot, remove the space between the h and tt and click submit.

    3. Then click the "ATS uploads" tab found here

    4. Upload the new or clear Avatar and/or Background by clicking this button

    5. If you do not have an Avatar already in place you MUST put the Clear Avatar in first or the background will default to the Avatar section and you will have to start over. Assuming you are putting in the Avatar, find it in your uploads and click it.

    6. This will take you to its dedicated page. Click "Avatar"

    7. This will take you back to your "Tools" page. Scroll down to find the Avatar section and click "Submit"

    8. Next return to your "ATS uploads" page and click your new Background

    9. This will take you to its dedicated page. Click "Profile Background"

    10. you will be taken to the tools page again. Scroll down to the "Your Background Image" section and click "Submit"

Your new background is now in place. Please note that it will not show on your profile page, as only Avatars do, however you will find it on your posts.

Setting your Signature Image

There is a glitch in the images signature section and it will not set your signature image. Instead, upload it using the directions above. Click it and you will go to its dedicated page. Copy the "Use in Post" link (pictured above) and return to your tools page manually. Past the code into your "Signature" area and click submit. If you wish to have your Signature Image centered do not use the "Use in Post" code. Instead scroll down to the "External full URL link" code and copy that one(also pictured above) and paste it into your "Signature" area on your tools page. Then add to the beginning [astimg] and [/atsimg] to the end and then click "Submit". If you wish to make the image a link, treat it like a "Hot Link" (See example in the image below)

If you have any problems just post your question and one of the other members can help you through it.

Enjoy your new Avatar/Background/Signature image and thank you for stopping by.

Agarta

P.S. Please spread the word we love making new and imaginative images.

hi there thanks for the assistance.

I can't even get past the transparent image stage. I'm using osx which I'm new to. can't find a way to copy transparent image to desktop, let alone upload it I just get save as and the thread url. I also can't find a way to use to copy paste the code to uploads either.

thanks for your help but I think I better walk away from the computer for a while, I'm about ready to smash the thing up. I already smashed up two printers last week, and am ready to do the same with the new one (can't select draft, or keep prints lighter) and my mac. I switched because i remember the days when osx was supposed to be user friendly, it so rubbish if it wasn't for the gesture and context aware trackpad/mouse I'd be selling them now and returning exclusively to my windows machines.

I'm in the UK and I'm being throttled now for tethering when I shouldn't, I'll have another go in the morning. I'll have about 3 hours throttle free if i'm lucky.

Edit: I'm a printer murderer and it felt great! epsom got punched to death while lexmark was thrown from a height I recommend it to anyone it's very cathartic....for a few minutes.

No sarcasm here at all....but this reason alone is enough to keep me away from OSX.

In years I have never had a problem setting up a printer in OSX.. And i've been a mac user for a LONG time. Is there a specific issue the person is having or is it just that they "dont work"

I may be able to help...

Well, you guys know the old saying of 'pictures or it didn't happen'......

Sorry that you had to endure such um, pain.
At least it was a quick death!!

Maybe some one here can help you before you toss another printer.
Good luck....

Hi agarta that's perfect. Thank you so much.

---

To everyone else I hope my printer murder pics brought a smile to your faces, it brought a massive one to mine and I don't regret it for a minute.

I'd just written a post for your amusement describing my osx and printer woes but I accidently pressed select all and cut when I wanted select and copy. So I lost it all. I'll post it for the giggles when I'm not using this deliberately crippled and restrictive apple tablet. I still daren't switch on my mac. Took me six hours yesterday just to create a basic six column table in 'pages'. And my new HP 3055a budget printer thinks I can only get 30 pages per cartridge and refuses to reduce quality and make prints lighter to save ink. That's something I would love some help with from the member who has generously offered it...but probably not today. I like to keep my stress levels low on the weekend.

Why does it all have to be so complicated? I'll reprint here something I mentioned in a PM to a kind member offering support and encouragement:-

"It seems far more complicated than it needs to be. I don't know why all software can't be written as follows

Q. Do you want to create an avatar?
A. Yes.
Q. Let's begin with the small foreground image. Would you like it to be transparent so that it does not cover up any background image you may want to add?
A. Yes.
Q. Ok. A stock transparent image from ATS servers has been applied to your profile. Would you now like to set up the background image?
A. Yes.
Q. You will need to upload your preferred image to ATS first from your computer. Copy and paste the image or image location into the following box. If you do not know how to do this, type the word 'Help' into the box instead.........
Bla bla bla "

I'll be back later to have one more go today with the background image, but the moment I get stressed I'm gonna walk away. And just do what I normally do on a weekend and make a nuisance of myself on the main boards. Stress is for weekdays not weekends.

Thanks again to Agartha, great work and exactly how I imagined it.

Merky

Its really only difficult on an IPad (so i understand, anyway). Get to a desktop/laptop and it should get much easier to do.
