Google already have done (probably still do) just that.

They record the sound from your mic when you visit their site. The claim is that the audio recorded is analysed and matched with adverts playing on your TV/Radio and probably products/themes mentioned in your conversations then adverts are targeted at you specifically based upon the demographic their analysis software provides.

Google Eavesdropping

Google also launched a phone service like skype. - Google phone

The issue here again is monitoring the conversations made, again to target adverts at your demographic.

Google wants to monitor your phone conversations

Then their offering of Gmail - which is a great set of email tools. The problem is, they search every last letter of your personal emails Google gmail spies on users

And, lastly, while most definitely missing out on some of the other methods they employ, They keep a record of everything you have search for 2 years, while not logged in with a google account, and 7 years if you are. Of course, once the 2 years and 7 years expire there is a good chance they keep an archive somewhere, and an even greater chance that they will retain backups of their servers forever.

Anything you do on the internet is tracked, watched, monitored automatically and sometimes, if you get the wrong attention, that information is manually addressed.

I put a piece of paper of mine as well. I guess visiting this site and this lifetime movie I watched with my mom (I know what you're thinking but
) a couple years back is what did it for me, hahaha. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

What do they have to gain by looking at my webcam? Unless they enjoy watching me while I'm checking out some porno. Lol in which case I feel sorry for them.

The question is, what is the intention of those agencies which are watching us.

Currently there is the possibility of total surveillance of much of the phone and internet connected world. What they do with that potential remains to be seen.

Whats worrisome is that so few seem to care.

Id be less worried about governments hacking your stuff and more worried about perverts lol....seriously the government doesn't have the time to watch everyone all day long....they would be bored as hell.

Thats not the point. The point is that all data is forever being stored on anyone and could be used against anyone at any time.

The tech will become increasingly harder to detect & invasive. It's already beyond what Orwell could have imagined. And the tech the general public knows about has already been surpassed.

Whats amazing is that Orwell understood this even prior to Television, not to mention Internet.

You are asking what is to gain by knowing everything about everyone, including how they look, where they are, what they do, what they think?

A lil' off-topic but: Do you think some NSA nerd, somewhere, has fallen in stone-cold love through web cam spying? I mean skyfloating, for example, is beautiful even if she were pickin' her nose.

Pure speculation on your part (whether Im beautiful or not). I dont think we are being monitored YET either. The system is still being set up as the decades go by...slowly and incrementally.

Here's an interesting related story.

While I was in the Navy we were showed a video as part of a security brief, and just to be clear, none of this is classified, if it was I wouldn't risk posting this. Anyway, in the video, they showed how wireless devices (cell phones, laptops) can be remote activated to record sound and video while in an "off" or "sleep" state. This included the cameras attached to these devices. This video was shown to us because we held security clearances and worked in secured spaces. They showed us this video to show us why there was a sign telling us that cell phones, PDAs, laptops, and other wireless devices were forbidden in these areas. Of course, their angle was that they were afraid Cyber Terrorists would use these as tools to gain access to secured materials. So, if these so-called "Cyber Terrorists" are able to do this, then we all know the government is able to.

Wow this thread a lot of attention compared to the last thread (www.abovetopsecret.com...) on it..

There are cameras and microphones (and location services through GPS or Wi-Fi) in:

New Cars that have the option for OnStar
Smartphones - the iPhone 5 has 4 or 5 microphones (to use for noise cancellation supposedly) and a front and back facing camera + light censor. Just about every phone these days has a camera or 2 (or even more in 3d camera phones)
Laptops and Desktop computers
iPads/tablets
iPod touches
Game consoles (Xbox 360 kinect & ps3 have cameras, wii only has a light sensor - you can replace it with 2 candles if youre really paranoid lol)
"smart" TVs
And MANY MORE.

Not to mention all the cameras they have on/in street lights, businesses, schools, government buildings, WE COULD BE BEING WATCHED AND LISTENED TO AT ALL TIMES! I'm guilty of having almost everything on the list I mentioned so I know it's impossible to stop, I've been an ATSer since 2008 and have known since then, still I have an iPhone and iPad that I covered the cameras on for the first few days then said f it lol, they already know where I am and they can hear everything I say anyway, might as well just use the cameras.. I'm pretty sure most people do the same thing.

Impossible to stop it unless we can prove it to a lot of people, and unfortunately that will never happen to the sheeple of America, including myself, who just love their technology too much to believe there's something wrong, and that we could be being watched and listened to right now through things we use and love so much, and even as I type this they are probably watching and putting me on "the list".

I always have a piece of electrical tape covering the webcam on my lap top

Same here , same here. There isn't even a " I don't know why" ,they can record anything anywhere/ listen to anything, I even cover the ones on my phone ^^ with trapwire in place( trapwire.com...) , don't trust anything.
Can't wait for Halloween , going be some brightly colored eyes in the sky ^^
it really is funny with all this surveillance, everyone is willing to pour hundreds of millions into this and other programs that are similar, but the second you turn your camera phone on anyone in law/government, mysteriously its illegal tape recording. so, when a politician gets caught drug dealing/buying/child molesting/cop beating the crap out of someone or just doing something out of the ordinary and its caught on cctv and facial recognition proves its that person, will it still be illegal, or will it then be able to be used in court? (ill bet we change the laws again heh?)

Video or no video, picture or no picture, web cam or street cam.....pictures really don't matter as they will record every keystroke. That in itself can make your mind run through hundreds of scenarios. At some point...each of us....will be judged by people who have no right to judge us. I predict only a fraction of the smallest percentage will see the terrible effects of this "tool". At that time.....the good guys are going to have to stick together!

Good post! I think your spot on with your observations, I go to great lengths, I don't Facebook or Tweet anyone, I dislike their policies, I use an alternative search engine to Google. I don't do anything wrong but I dislike all the must have your info, (I also don't "fall for these "reward card schemes" as long as I'm not using my cash to buy something that causes harm, it's none of their business. Those are my thoughts.

Well if this worries you here..

Install Xubuntu (linux)

Xubuntu

Then take a look at this nice list of everything you need

Privacy and Security

With that simple setup, you no longer get viruses, spyware, ads, driveby scripts, RATS, etc,etc

oh and with Linux if you had a thought someone was accessing your webcam you can do a simple command and see whats running, and if by chance someone was viewing the webcam you can easily block the ip address from your computer
