Yup, the next window of opportunity appears to be on October 14th, after a front blows through the area.

I'm only 90 miles from Roswell, and I was out in the field with my binoculars, eager to see the balloon and capsule as it rose up (the air is very clear out here when there are no storms, and you can see a long way away), only to find out that it was cancelled yesterday.

The local news said that the balloon requires an almost windless atmosphere in order to launch. I'm shaking my head, thinking that they picked the wrong month. They may get lucky after the front comes through and there is a temporary lull before the winds pick up again, but don't be surprised if it gets cancelled a few more times. They should have done this in July.

Seems like once he deploys his parachute the jerk from the change in speed could be dangerous...it would be fun to hang glide from that high and see how far someone could make it.

You live near the site? That's cool, expect some UFO sightings tonight with that helium balloon on the run.

I hope it's not delayed this time. It's a lot of waiting.

Especially the 2 hour ascent....

But I guess once he leaves the ground, there is no turning back.

Now they say a launch "could come" at 10AM MDT which is another one and three-fourths hours from now.

They are waiting for high atmospheric winds to die down and won't inflate the balloons until it does.

Edit Update - They are now inflating the balloon. The winds (700 feet up) that have prolonged this departure are calming down.

Well geez, it's a big galaxy. They probably got lost on the way over.

And I guess the weather hold has been lifted, so this looks like it may in fact be the final delay.
