C hinese purchase of wind farms in Oregon blocked by President Obama

For the first time in 22 years, a U.S. president has stopped a foreign business from locating in the United States. National security risks is the reason given for blocking four wind farm projects slated for northern Oregon near a Navy installation used to base unmanned drones and electronic warfare planes on training missions, according to the Huffington Post.

Tensions between the U.S. and China have been increasing and this is bound to be another aggravation. Obama ordered Ralls Corporation which is owned by Chinese nationals to relinquish its interest in the wind farms that it had purchased earlier this year.

The president has the final authority to prohibit foreign activities.....

I'm not sure where I stand on this one.

On the one hand I see why the President called them on it regarding possible national security issues. On the other, here we have some people investing money into the economy and providing jobs.

Talk about Americans caught in the middle...

Thoughts?

I vote for Devil....

I also think it was done because of the election... IF the devil, err Obama, gets re-elected lets see if they try to buy it again.

Are these privately owned farms?

If so, Obama has effectively told an American citizen who he can sell his business to and who he can't.

Half way in the middle on this one as it sets a dangerous precedent IMO.

And it looks like the purchase was already made. So the dictator is telling the foreigner to move on. Unless I see this wrong.

Peace

Seems strange in light of the bigger picture -

After a temporary slowdown in H2 2011, Chinese direct investment in the United States has once again picked up. Investent flows rebounded from a three-year low of $69 million in Q4 2011 to $442 million in Q1 2012 and $3.2 billion in Q2 2012, totaling $3.6 billion in H1 2012. This has set the stage for a record-breaking year with the potential to significantly outpace the high of $5.7 billion recorded in 2010.

I wonder if any of these other investments are near military bases or if this is just an "tough stance" for November.

rhgroup.net...

Just found this from RT as they see it -

citing its proximity to a naval base that tests drones.

Well...

This is a bit hypocritical of the Administration. They have been pushing a Pro US investment agenda in China courting Chinese investors.

So, now this particular location I live near and which is a hot bed for wind farms is a no no. I personally know a few people who were out of work for long periods of time that are now finally working full time and making good money doing wind mill maintenance.

hmm...

wow Obama did something right for a change

no land should be sold to the Chinese at the moment. the reason is rather simple. currently china is playing games with a good chunk of the pacific nations. one of the excuses they use is "we owned it once upon a time, therefore it belongs to us". so just think years down the road (china tends to take the long view of things), oh we own that land so we can put a military base on it if we want. not to mention of course a TALL wind turbine would be a great spot to mount surveillance equipment to spy on the navy installation, and china is well known for their spying and theft of top secret technology.

from what i see is china is playing "stepping stones" in asia. they claim the spratly islands belong to them as it is in the "south china sea" and therefore it MUST belong to them. give them that and next they will claim the next bit of land as being in their sea zone and therefore it is also theirs, repeat until all the pacific is theirs. would they try the same thing with land they "purchase" in the states? "well we own this part so logically the rest is ours as well, after all we have to protect our interests"

no, no land should ever be sold to such an untrustworthy country. it is more than bad enough they own a sizable chunk of the US debt. if we were smart (and i know it is becoming next to impossible), we would cut off a trade with this rouge nation. why are we so willing to buy everything from a rather potential enemy such as this anyway? nothing like paying for their military build up.

Can we say agenda?

Obama does nothing unless it benefits his cronies or himself.

If he really wanted to shut down a corporation that rapes and pillages the American worker...start with Wal-Mart.

Peace

It was bound to happen eventually in spite of Murphy's law...

I think Hunt's theory on broken clocks may also have something to do with it...

Why?

Why did Obama stop the purchase?

Afraid I'm going to have to echo Jude here. We have a POTUS dictating what can and cannot be purchased?

Am I giddy about a foreign power making purchases in the US?
No.

But there is no law against it. Unless I'm wrong about that.

You're not wrong at all.

Obama has no right to do this. And if he does, there's an agenda.

They should sell them to them.

Then make them replace them all with the one that don't harm animals.

It was on the news they shut down the windfarms. The free energy those wind turbines can produce, ain't available to Americans right now.

Go look at the wind turbine farms, you'll see them turned off even though the wind is blowing.

The nuclear and other power producers were gettin HURT by the cheaper energy from those wind farms.

It doesn't matter if the Chinese even DID own the wind farms. Obama should have sold them to China....they ain't being used anyways.

I drive by them almost weekly. I saw them all up and running like two days ago.

I used to live in Hermiston, I had no idea they were using that area for testing drones.
These are the windfarms near Boardman, correct? Every time I have driven past they have been turning,as you have stated. Interesting precedent being set here, very tough call with the proximity to a "sensitive" area.

Just clarifying that this is NOT the first time in 22 years that this has happened. Bush's Administration blocked the sale of US Ports to Dubai a few years ago if I remember correctly.

Personally I don't really understand why step in now and block this sale. They've come in an purchased so much of our infrastructure and corporations thus far, what's one more wind farm?
