But I was thinking some more.
And it was pointed out earlier, that it looks like the gas cloud is mostly hydrogen and oxygen. Most likely in the form of water. I don't know if water would be more prone to getting blasted out by a black hole, or if heavier elements would be. I'm not sure if that is known yet, I'll have to dig into it more.
But right now, I'm thinking if this was the cause of the cloud, it should consist of a more even mix of elements. Then again the heavier particles might get swallowed by the event horizon more easily than the lighter ones.
I need to do more digging.
