Hello ATS,

I have searched for a answer to something that has effected me since I could drink.

I do not drink...only on rare occasions I do, I have a strange muscle ache and weakness from my neck through my mid back.

It can be painful after just a few sips, I also get very ill from it.

I haven't touched the stuff since last year....before that I went without a sip for 5 years...but same side effects.

I looked up Alcohol dehydrogenese but no mention of muscle pains, and weakness as side effects....but so many others have asked about it online.

Does anyone else know what this is?

Or have this same issues while consuming alcohol?

Patient: "Doctor, it hurts when I do this."
Doctor: "Don't do that."

Not trying to be funny but why do you keep trying to drink alcohol if it effects you in that way?

Wow - I thought I was freak

Just a weird sensation at the back of my neck and particularly radiating outwards along my shoulders..... no back pain though. It definitely feels uncomfortable and for me the sensation begins right after the first few sips (of cold beer).

Happened only occasionally though - but it always managed to get my attention -

I went looking it up ages ago ..... if I recall correctly, a possibly related to lymph nodes -

Hi, sorry to hear of your pains! Nothing worse than an ailment you cant put a finger on. Hopefully I don't frighten the crap out of you, but I have somewhat similar problems.
I have in my spinal cord a post traumatic syringomyelia, which is basically a cyst on the inside of my spinal cord. As the cyst grows, it continues to crush and damage my nerves causing a myriad of pains and symptoms throughout my body. My chest feels like it has been sanded down raw from a belt sander and then stabbed like an arrow in it. 10 years of that pain really gets a guy down I can tell you. But I also noticed that when I used to drink (not for 8 years now I think) the normal 'feeling loose happy body' signals my limbs should have been getting were instead felt as a huge increase in my pain levels due to the cyst effecting how my sensations should be experienced.

I'd suggest getting an MRI of the spinal cord, particularly in the neck, as you may have syringomyelia which can be created either by trauma, or an arnold chiari malformation where the spinal cord goes into the brain.

Sadly there's no cure...

Now I've scared the crap out of you, are you sure your not just chugging the beers down so fast your jerking your head back to skull! skull skull???

I don't keep drinking....I don't drink.

When I did, I figured it was a rare thing....when I tried it again after 5 years....it never went away.

Btw, I don't have a doctor, I have no real issues...I was curious if others have it

I take no medications....no suppements.

I did work out quite a bit back then....but last year...no rarely.

It would spread out down my back starting out as a sensation....but then it would get like a mild charlie horse feeling..

I found the website discussing the reaction to alcohol that I mentioned in my previous post above .

DISCLAIMER: Looking at web articles regarding anything medical can be alarming - particularly if some of your symptoms match ..... it may prove useful but let your doctor make the diagnosis.

All the best !

About a year ago I developed what I called an allergy to alcohol. That is to say that after the first swallow of any alcoholic beverage (I have tried them all) I get this awful ache like feeling in my neck, chest, back, and arms. It starts about a minute or so after the first swallow and then is gone in about 10 min or so. It is unpleasant enough that I don't take another drink. I researched any alcohol related allergies similar to this and the ONLY that I came up with over and over again is Hodgkins disease.

In about August I noticed a swollen lymph node in the posterior triangle region. I believe it's the cervical chain. It just kind of popped up. I had not been sick with anything since the summer of 2006. The ent said it's about 11mm and described it as firm, rubbery, and moveable and that I shouldn't worry about since it is not painful. Does anyone know or has anyone ever heard of alcohol pain being caused by anything other than Hodgkins?
Ant advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Rachel

Sounds like it could possibly be an acetyl aldehyde response. It comes sometimes from not having enough Molybdenum in the body. It is needed to detox Lactic acid, Acetyl Aldehyde, sulfite, and Xanthian in the body. The enzyme that converts these things needs molybdenum. Acetyl aldehyde headaches are like upper neck-aches for me where sulfite headaches are sharp and throbbing between the temples. I take a multimineral and I don't get them much anymore. You can also eat more seeds and nuts or cocoa wheats, cream of wheat, or wheat germ once in a while.

Thank you,

This is exactly what I go through....I had been digging with no definitive answer.

I have never heard of it as a side effect of Hodgkins....thats interesting

I hope it hasn`t worried you unnecessarily - it did however freak me out first time I read it

But not unlike yourself - I don`t really drink much these times, so it isn`t an issue for me.

Were your symptoms prior to the supplements triggered by anything, or were they continuous?

No it hasn't worried me

I was chatting with a friend about wine, and I decided to post about it....

I was curious to get the ATS'rs thoughts on the subject.

I used to get muscle cramps like what you describe when I used to drink. I found out what was causing it was potassium depletion.

If it happens everytime then it sounds like the horrible hodgkins effects..
No drink for you, youll have to just settle for flowers from denver, and alchopops.

I much rather it be potassium depletion, then Hodgkins side effect.....thanks for posting

It's actually fairly common. After the first one, it tends slowly diminish. And if you drink more than occasionally, it'll stop altogether.
