Yes.........and that is their goal..........without any regulations the capitalistic goal is to race labor to the lowest common demoninator...........and keep it there.

Every corporate charter says..........."externalize cost while maximizing profits".

Externalize as in reduce like in outsourcing to the cheapest slave labor they can find.

They did it to kids before labor laws made it illegal..............voted by women who fought to get the right to vote so that they could change the laws........it was one of the big reasons of the revolt by the sufferjets.

Wealth is nothing more than owning more of the resources of earth and labor of humans .......in excess it is an obscene coruption of greed............a pornographic lust for more for the sake of more...........a game to die with the most.......

you people are disgusting. its a REALITY that there is competition in labor, and that may mean that business cant afford to pay an Australian $15/hour when they can get the exact same labor for $2 from people who are thrilled to get $2.

I'm just in shock someone would write this? No one deserves to make billions of dollars at the expense of everyone else...and it's shameful you think ANY human is only worth $2 a day...because they are poor it's alright to explot them, and cause finacial ruin to the people who's jobs get replaced. This lack of humanity and morals in the name of "business" will be the downfall to us all.

Somehow I suspect your the type who would be the first to kick people to curb, when those "deadbeats" who had thier jobs replaced by slave labor can't pay thier bills, or throw them in jail when they can't pay thier taxes....your attitude is disgusting !

First off, $75M is not just "something". Secondly, I have no doubt whatsoever that 99% of ATS could take that $75M head start, employee a bunch of financial/business advisors and make the obscene amounts of money Gina is.

For those other on the thread who like the idea of earning $2 a day though... If you worked for Gina you would be living in the top side of Australia. Houses in the mining towns rent for $1000s a week, and you won't be able to buy a pretty humble house in one of those towns for less than a million. Try living on $2 a day and pay that kind of rent. Try finding a bank that would give you a mortgage based on that kind of earnings.

The fat lady is desperate. Iron ore is dropping in price by the day. The Chinese economy is cooling fast, really fast. It is like others have said here. She came by her wealth through inheritance. She multiplied her investment many fold because she was lucky - not only did she inherit vast wealth but the industry it came out of has flourished in Aussie, because of China. Things are taking a down turn for Gina, she is now facing the awful fact her earnings may be less than the $600+ a second they have been up to this point.

She has no idea what reality is like for the average human being. She is indeed a caricature of her kind, used to eating filet mignon steak for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and considers the workers ought to be happy enough eating cake.

Not necessarily. Just because a job is "blue collar" it does not mean the job is low-skilled. Machinists, welders, and auto mechanics have "blue collar" jobs, but one would not call their job low-skilled or low paying. A receptionist has a white collar job, but we would not necessarily call that job high skilled or even high paying for that matter.

The best solution to make sure those with little or no marketable skills, i.e. the grunts with shovels, make decent wages in fully develped countries is to thin their ranks by educating them. The fact is that every developed country still needs people to wash dishes and do other grunt work. However, if the supply of low skilled laborers is large, employers will be able to pay them low wages. If the supply of low skilled laborers is small, employers will have to pay them relatively well.

Thankfully we have a legal minimum wage so not one single person is exploited by such wonderful human beings like Gina.

i'm confused about the title because what I read she didn't say anything about Australian workers needing to be paid $2, she said some Africans work for $2 dollars a day. what I think she was trying to say is Austrilians get paid more for a job than what Africans do (mining), $2dollars compared to what like $15-20, and it's uncompetitive and dangerous for the future of Australia natural resource exports .

I don't think she seriously meant working for two dollars is what Australians should work for, but wage cuts will be needed for it to be competitive compared to Africa.

Just like how China is heavily invested in Australia so it is in Africa, if it can get the same minerals for the fraction of the price it'll stop importing from Australia and with that Mrs Rinehart profits will go down.

and it's just like in the USA why hire a American citizen for a $10-12 dollar job when a Mexican is more than willing to do it for $7-8 or outsource jobs to India and China.

She pointed out Africans will work for $2 a day, but at no point did she actually say Australians should work for $2 a day. She was making a point because Africans DO work for that kind of money. That's the reality of this world. She said they should get more competitive.

wow, my beautiful lady and I are living on 2 (two) of her seconds a fortnight.

but because of us having to watch how much we spend on food when we shop, there's no way we will end up looking like her. I wonder if there are any studies on the correlation of wealth to fat slug looks or maybe lack of physical exercise to said fat slug looks. Only reason that would stop my thoughts of pathetic fatness would be if there was a medical condition causing it.

always they say they can't compete. That is BS. You just can't make profits at the insane rate you do now. You would still have a sound business, but you just couldn't have a private jet, several houses, and your own small army of house slaves.....

Really they can't compete then amongst their socialite friends. Just don't hang out with them. How about you hang out with your workers.......they might be damn good people to have around.

If every country kept production within their borders THEIR people would be better off for it. So they will say they can't compete....but they sell their products to their own people. Hardly any country in the western world can produce externally and sell their products externally. They can't compete in their own country amongst their own people without producing first almost for free?....then they suck at business. Their people need certain things regardless. If they can't offer them and make a profit under normal circumstances then they are just bad at saving and managing a budget.


It is getting to the point that I really hope for a financial total collapse. I dream of a world when all these people wake up and realize they need to go find a job.

There is no excuse. They screw their countrymen in every country they inhabit. I sometimes think an all out class war is inevitable and necessary. This mentality does not correct itself. It is the human cancer on this planet.

She can't even muster up the will power to eat healthy or work out yet asks that people muster up the will power to become slaves. Do the work and CONQUER if you want a slave force.

Just a question in regards to you mentioning 'unskilled'. I'm classed as an unskilled worker in reference to the mining industry. I applied for over 80 bottom level entry mining jobs, and was prepared to work anywhere in Australia, yet i only got 3 replies from the 80+ applications,all rejections, and heard nothing from the other applications. But all i keep hearing is about the "mining boom" and how the mines are "crying out for workers", yet unless i know someone who knows someone, i can't even get a foot in the door. But then i hear about bringing overseas workers from Asia because "Australians don't want to work in the mines" ?????
There seems to be a lot of contradictions and hypocracy in these comments, and leaves someone like me very confused as to where i stand.
The miners are well paid for several reasons..............
1. They have a strong union.
2. Its dangerous work, and danger money is factored into their pay.
3. Its usually hot and dirty work, and just as plumbers are well paid for cleaning out the pipes to your toilet, the miners are well paid for working in less than average enviroments.
4. The mining companies are making record profits, and those profits should be shared amongst the workers who do the work, which in turn makes the profits.

If claims are going to be made that the mining industry can't survive unless wages are cut, then does that mean the mining industry will collapse and fold, or does it mean the mining companies can't continue to make record profits due to trying to keep the constant expected return that so many shareholders today expect ?
I think whats happening is the mining boom has peaked, and there's only one way to go now and thats down, so in order to keep the shareholders happy, the first option usually always seems to be that the workers pay is the first thing attacked, then followed by the wokers actual job.
Investing in shares is no different to any other form of gambling, and choosing to gamble [invest] on a company during a mining boom should not be a garuantee of a return on that gamble [investment]. The workers are the ones who do the work and make the company its profits, and without those workers, then these mining companies are nothing more than a business name registed with the tax office. The shareholders in these companies are given priority ahead of the workers when it should be the other way around. Isn't a worker keeping his/her job more important than a shareholder making a higher return than the previous 12 months ??? If i choose to invest [gamble] on a football team or a horse race, no one cares if i lose my money, so why should the workers care if shareholders lose on their bet ?
But Julia Gillard and Gina Reinhart both have one thing in common, we, the Australian people didn't vote for either of them, but they both have such a huge say in where this country heads..............and the rest of us are just along for the ride !
