I pose a legitimate open ended question for people of all perspectives to anwer. What are the causes of terrorism? and why do terrorists pursue such actions?

This may relate to Islamic terrorism, terrorism in the middle east, international terrorism or any form of assymetrical warfare. The only reason I post it in this forum is because Salafist Islamic terrorism seems to be the most predominant and it continually dominates the headlines. Perhaps a discussion of the causes could lead to some creative and effective resolutions to terrorism. Fire away

I think that Luke Skywalker became a terrorist because he had good intentions. He also had nothing left to lose.

The Rebel scum.
Imagine how many people Luke killed when he blew up the semi completed Death Star. Those guys in Clerks make a good point. There must have been innocent construction workers on the Death Star. Prisoners. Guests. Many of the Imperial employees would have just been trying to make a living to feed their families.

Luke also had the bad influence of Obi Wan and Yoda. He was radicalized by them.

What are the causes of terrorism?

Governments. They are the only ones organised enough to fund and carry out such operations.

and why do terrorists pursue such actions?

Fear is a way of controlling people. People are more easily malleable when they live in fear.
Why do they want to control? To achieve a political agenda.

st.

EDIT: Small scale terrorism is usually because some people are feeling repressed, it's their way of fighting back against the oppressive forces.

Exploitation and Injecting foreign influence, as well as outright funding the development of terrorist organization.

In my opinion these three actions are some of the major reasons contributing to the creation of terrorist groups not only targeting the US but many nations throughout history.

I could go into a lengthy diatribe about historical examples, but we all know exactly what I am talking about.

The comment i would like to make to conclude is terrorists typically do not just come into being without external influence, they are born as a result of external factors.

If our home were invaded by a foreign nation and we took a certain disliking to having our home destroyed, our people murdered, and our wealth stolen - we would then be known as terrorists.

1. unwanted foreign policy imposed upon the people.

2. Black ops, killing innocent people to propagate a resistance, once the terrorists begin to retaliate, more laws can be introduced, less rights, more control.

3. Religion, my god is bigger than your god.

What causes terrorism??

- Extremism. Religious or ideology or political.

- ACTION on that extremism. Either violent action or subdued. Subdued meas hitting people in ways they don't understand .. using the legal system or religious systems to overtake the rights of others in order for the terrorist/s to gain power.

- A 'leader' who exploits people either with fears or promises or both.

- People who buy into the hype ... buy into the extremism .. buy into a 'saviour' leader.

- $$$ backing. Either from a government or donations or or a few rich people (like Soros) who want to play political chess with countries and peoples lives in order to make themselves more powerful or richer.

Looking at that list, there are A LOT of entities that could fit into the camp of 'terrorist'.
I can think of at least one or two recent US Presidents that fit this description as well.

What causes terrorism?
Religion seems to be the common denominator here.

Yeah... sure there are exceptions, but hey, who wants to split hairs huh??

What causes terrorism?...
I would say a peoples that thought they were superior to all other humans therefore they could exterminate all non "chosen people" like they were rats.
That is terrorism so I guess the cause is a peoples with a "We're the chosen ones" attitude.

Terrorism, which I understand to generally be a tactic of causing instability to a society via violence, is practiced the most by governments and their militaries. From the Roman empire to the U.S. empire, terrorism has quite a long history. In the Middle East today, Islamists have nothing on such countries as the United States, Britain, and Israel for waging terrorist campaigns on civilians, and thus destabilizing entire countries.

Poverty, economic inequality, wealth disparity, political injustice and social injustice seem to be the re-occuring themes in these discussions (oh and the power of the force!). These suggestions seem to be synonomous with liberal economic theory. That the causes of most of the world's ill are economic. I can relate to these, it seems that the major breeding grounds for terrorists appear to be in poverty striken areas such as Nigeria, Somalia, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and so forth. Historically, in the Palestinian case, terrorism was first conducted by secular, athiest, and left-wing revolutionaries. Does this suggest that Religion is only a potential radicalising force combined with other undelying factors?

What about the international Islamic extremists originating from Saudi Arabia who are particularly wealth themselves?

What causes "Terrorism" is, classifications.
A farmer or people defending their countries, are not "Terrorists" until someone making up the rules a s they go along decides they are.
Also, True terrorists are those who strike causing death and injury, whilst attempting to make it look like somebody else did it, those people may be freedom fighters, but when the hi-jacking of their cause may get someone else the results they desire, terrorism is used to create that environment.
Such as 7/7 bombings.
9/11 bombings.
Gulf of tonkin.
USS liberty.
The Munich Olympics.
Pearl harbour.
Operation Gladio.
Orchestrated by the same seat of power for their own ends, Terrorism is the act of usingf violence to dupe the people into going along with their blood hot, and their minds unthinking with whatever the PTB need them too.
All these events, blamed on other people, almost everyone knows and understands the real act of terrorism was used to create an environment in which the blame on another party allowed those who really did it, to get what they wanted.
Terrorism, defined by its action, and not the label those in power want to see ascribed.

In religious terrorism: "Because God told us that we can fight our enemies this way, and it even gives me some bonuses afterwards".

In political terrorism: "
1. "This is a big conspiracy and the only way we can do something about it is by causing havoc".
2. "We are being run by a tyrannic government and we must fight to get the power. In their eyes we're terrorists, in our eyes we are the heroes." The rest of the world also thinks they're heroes.
3. Same as above but no one in the world except themselves think they're doing any good. They'd seen as terrorists.

Imagine you are a Poor, Uneducated young Man of 18 living in the Middle East. Your Hormones are in full swing. You can't drink or look at porn. You can't even see Women as they are either at home or wear Head to Toe coverings. You have no way to blow off steam. You can't get laid unless you are Married and can't get a wife without Money so one day a Man comes to you and Feeds you...Gives you Shelter in a Madrassa...a Religious School that is paid for by donations of the Oil Rich as a way to protect their power base.

If you show promise...you are sent to school...if not you are promised if you put on a Suicide Belt and Blow Up a check point that you will go to Paradise where you will have a swarm of Virginal Girls at your call. You have no other options and since you are so sexually frustrated...Death becomes a possible way out. This creates a Terrorist. Split Infinity

I will reply to the best as i can...

First, 1 person's "terrorist" = anothers freedom fighter. take Libya's rebel forces.. america was fully behind it, but they are going against the government.

So Government causes Terrorism.

Lets say a country is about 65% Culture A, 35% Culture B. Government will be composed most of Culture A, now there would be Culture B party running in the election but even that culture would have multiple party within, therefore, chances for Culture B to win is almost impossible, even if all the population vote for one.

Now in some countries when Culture A wins the election over many years, the rules toward Culture A would become more beneficial(more Culture A related company, more Culture A graduates, Culture A would be rich, discrimination, Culture B will be "looked down" etc) and Culture B would slowly lose their right.

Some group of activist will form from Culture B, they will carry out small protests demanding equal rights etc, but Culture A would not notice the change because of slow chance of favourtism over many years. This small protest would slowly turn into bigger protest with bottles and rocks against government issued army.

The protesters would become militant, and most of the Culture B would support them and think of them as Rebel fighters against the government tyranny aka State Terrorism. Culture B would acquire illegal weapons to fight the biased army forces and in return the army forces would retaliate. Out numbered, the rebel group will rely on guerrilla tactics. This will bring a civil war, and in order to gain funds for the war and support of the people, government will issue propaganda such as Culture B is not native to this land, etc etc, and out of fear of the other group, Culture A would pour money in for the "defense" of "their" country.

The would be causalities on both sides, Culture A with its small rebel fighters would recruits soldiers of 15 and 16 yrs olds(who has lost their parents, family and friends raped in front of them, cut into pieces and have nothing else but revenge in their mind). They will join the rebels to fight the "oppressors" to carry out attacks on government leaders.

Other countries will support a Government over some rebel group that is labelled to use "child soldiers" thus making them terrorist.

This is a true story that happened to a country, where many still believe them as terrorist. and its not in the middle east.
