Also,I posted the screenshots of what I saw to PROVE that there's no way it's nothing more then poor reporting and a map full of glitches. There's no way 4 MAJOR earthquakes off the coast of Russia would go unreported. If I remember correctly,it had 5 listed at the same strength a bit ago.

That would certainly seem to be the case.. It was and is usually very quick to get the event posted but rather slow about correcting it.. I think they pull RSS and just accumulate rather than refreshing the whole thing. Whatever the case... bad for a disaster info site. My bad on being too distracted to check more sites....

While you may not really feel the deep ones that much, the fact they are that deep is indicative of a much larger problem. The deeper you go, the more it effects the base of the plates where they connect. Its actually a bad omen of sorts.

Please do enlighten me as to why this was a bad omen?

As I understand it the quakes at depths like this are at the point where they are just about to be absorbed into the mantle, but currently are still cool enough to be brittle. Beyond this point they become too hot and plastic to have earthquakes.

Mantle convection probably caused a slab pull that was resisted for some time as the subducting plate was stuck. The swarm of smaller shallower quakes were an indication that a slip was about to happen. The deeper part of the slab that has now freed itself can now continue its journey into oblivion as the rest of the slab moves down a fraction ready to start the cycle again.

I am never quite sure which of the two possibilities slab pull or slab push I prefer, but either way the slab moved as it freed up a fraction.

Of course if you are not into plate tectonics but prefer spherical lensing then something cooled a bit and fractured.

Yes, one of the problems with the RSS is that it really does matter which one you use.

The 1 hour is good for fast response but you lose any updates. Same also with the 1 day feeds which many use. I guess most people don't actually care after a day or so anyway, I use the 7 day and 30 day feeds myself.

Many times earthquakes of this magnitude and larger are incorrectly predicted on many sites, and occasionally are correctly predicted.

This was not unexpected or out of the ordinary and the number of larger quakes so far this year has been on the light side.

I am not about to go to the site you linked as WOT tells me the site is untrustworthy so I cannot see what you 'predicted'. Should we take every warning seriously. What should we do about it? Stop the quake from happening perhaps?

I was refering to pressure build up in general...while you are correct (couldn't have said it better myself..no really...I only speak bad english) I was eluding to a deeper issue (no pun intended). The frequency of the quakes in certain areas as pointed out from another poster could mean a faster rate of decay from the mantle pushing up.

Since we can't go to the earths core to see if its truly heating up causing the rate of plate recycle to increase, we can guess can't we? Its a work in progress anyway...but back to the main point...

The build up of pressure from one side to the other...if you look at total activity over a short given time you can see where stress is being applied to the western side of the pacific plates. My theory is that quake activity starts from the bottom up...granted deeper quakes are harmless in a sense because of their depth...I feel that it is plausible that such quakes can cause pressure rifts either in the same area, or on the direct opposite side of the plate at more shallow depths.

Does that make sense? No?...thats ok....I need coffee....but I do enjoy your explaination...very spot on.

At 625km deep it's non event.

Every earthquake over 5.1 seems to get reported here as if the earth is about to cease to exist. They happen every day, and every day of every year and every year of every decade, and every decade of every century. It's not the magnitude that's important it's the intensity based on how shallow it is.

7.1 at that depth is about 5.1 at 2km.

Its very rare that earthquake happens so deep. Deeper is happens, wider area it affects. USGS says now its depth was 625.9 km. Deepest earthquakes happen around 700km depth. Earthquakes are not possible any deeper, there are no plate tectonics.

Deep earthquakes are not understood yet. They are not probably caused by Lithosphere, because its high temperature and pressure shouldn't create brittle behaviour. They actually might be caused by phase transitions, where olivine turns into spinel.

If I'm understanding my ATS earthquake education correctly those black lines are just registering the waves from the Russian EQ. Think of it like this, you toss a large rock into a pond. The waves from that rock ripple out until they reach the shore line. That's a very simple way to understand it, but it has helped me.
