I think the idea floating around out there is that dogs can pick up infrasound frequencies. There's a theory out there that elephants can pick it up through the bottoms of their very sensitive feet. The whole idea revolves around the notion that a form of energy is released right before the quake itself in (I guess) some sort of infrasound shockwave.
That's the theory at least why animals bolted inland right before that huge quake/tsunami that hit Indonesia (I think?).
