you can write all the laws you want ... it wont change human nature ... since americans have a fetish for guns let them all own them .. just post warnings at all points of entry to the u.s and issue tourists sidearms and body armour on arrival ...

I think to change American gun laws in America it would take a generation. First you would have to come up with a system for a gun ownership licence say give 5-10 years for everyone to get a licence for hunting rifles and shot guns make it more difficult to get a licence to sell a gun and so on. It would also be necessary to ban the sale of particular fire arms such as hand guns and anything used other than for game keeping.

Then you would have to start collecting the old guns that is the most difficult part how you get all the guns back. That would be very difficult, it would probably require a gun amnesty that would allow everyone to hand in all there unlicensed weapons. In addition to this there would have to be massive operations by law enforcement to reclaim weapon stashes kept by armed criminals. Although it would never be permissible to enter into a private residence to forcibly “take their guns” rather there would have to be a certain amount of trust in the public and a acceptance that they could never get all the guns. However by banning the sale of ammunition and people carrying guns in public. It would probably take several generations before guns in a person’s home became less common.

One of the biggest problems would be changing attitudes, even with mass shootings people in America still defend the guns for everyone ethos. Just read any thread that calls for a ban on guns. That is something that would be almost impossible to do, it would take generations and require a radical change in the American psyche with education and very tough sentences on people found with illegal weapons.

In reality however, guns will always be easy to buy and shoot innocent people with in America and we should just all accept it.

You make it sound as if more guns would be the problem. Statistics show just the opposite. City's here that have banned guns have a much higher crime and murder rate.

Let everyone open carry, obviously minus people who have been convicted of violent crimes or weapon-related crimes.
If you take away the guns, people intent on committing crimes will find other weapons to use. Personally, I'd rather be shot than stabbed or beaten on the head with some blunt object. If this guy who did the Colorado shootings didn't have access to guns, he could have very well thrown some homemade grenades into the audience. I don't think banning guns will really accomplish anything...
But, on the other hand, if half the public was carrying a weapon, I'm willing to bet the crime rate would drop overnight.
When you know people are carrying guns, it's 1. a deterrent, and 2. possible prevention of a crime successfully taking place.
I wish people had much more freedom to defend themselves. If I'd change anything, I'd make the current laws LESS restrictive. Someone threatens you? Blow their head off. Society improves overnight.

I sleep better at night knowing criminals might think twice before crossing the threshold of my house because they might take a shotgun slug to the chest.

So lets take the guns away from the non criminals so the criminals know they have the upper hand.
