People wasting there lives i.e drug addicts ..alcoholics..scum bags etc..

I only raised an eyebrow recently wandering around Rhyl. Seemed like everyone was disheveled and off their conkers. Seriously though who can blame them? The whole town is shut and destitute, most people I saw looked genuinely ill.
Doesn't make them all scumbags, the poor sods would have to endure a pitiful existence whether they were compos mentis or non. Never seen a town die like it.

You know - almost everyone uses escapism to some point. If not drugs and alcohol, then technology, Facebook, games, TV, etc, etc. Almost everyone has an addiction. Not just drugs or alcohol. Foods, soda, sex, etc etc.

If you truly have no escape mechanism and not a single addiction or vice, good for you. I doubt that is the case though.

It would surprise you if you knew how many people did things that apparently make them 'scumbags' and 'weak.'

I do things I am sure you would frown upon. And in the past you might even catch me on the street in an 'altered' state wandering around and exploring. I am far from a weak person. And like others have pointed out, look at your successful people you mentioned as people you look up to and their experiences. Are they any less successful because of their experiences with alcohol or drugs?

Compassion can go a long way.

If you're honestly concerned about changing these people's lives and getting them on the right track, why not donate your time at a substance abuse clinic?
Maybe talking to these people and learning more about why they do what they do can help you understand how they got to where they are. Everyone has a story. I'll talk to anyone and I enjoy hearing their stories. Even if I don't agree with how someone wants to live their lives, it's interesting to learn how they chose the road they did and why they're continuing down it or why they've decided to make a change for the better. Everyone, no matter who you are, needs someone to talk to.

Some people just don't get the idea of having any mercy and compassion until you make them scream for it themselves.
