I have just walked through the the town where i live in the UK its a normal town in the north of England, but the people i see most days are dragging themselves around drinking beer and cider openly in the street some also high on crack and other drugs.

I know this type of behavior isn't just in my town but it does seem there are a hell of a lot to these addicts here.
It is such a waste of life! What goes wrong in these peoples lives to where they need to end up as wasters ?

Some people make excuses for them saying "well they had a bad childhood" or "addiction is a medical condition and they can't help it"...both of these things are bull# and i hate the fact that people try and defend the bad choices these scum bags make.

What do you all think?

Do you smoke cigarettes?

Do you take medication (prescription or non prescription?)

Do YOU drink alcohol?

Do you do any illicit drugs?

I do most these things (other than cigarettes) and live a perfectly normal life. In fact, I'm at work right now making a decent dollar. Many of the scumbag thieves you see in the streets aren't on drugs or alcohol but are mentally ill, perhaps these addicts are mentally ill themselves.

Maybe you should be criticizing your local government before passing judgement on these people. Your government should have better social services if it's as bad as you say it is. I've lived in some horrible places. Have you ever heard of East Hastings (Vancouver, Canada)? Our government has programs to assist these people due to our citizens demanding this. Perhaps you should quit your whining and actually take some action and make a difference.

I don't know you but you strike me as someone who likes to stand on their soap box.

I will answer your question with a question. Have you never been addicted to anything in your life? If not you are the exception, not the rule. People make bad decisions all the time (you cannot claim otherwise, as you'd be lying), and sometimes, for one reason or another, they stop caring. Who are you to judge another human being though? What gives you that right? I'll answer that question for you. Nothing gives you the right. Live and let live. Unless that blabbering crackhead is trying to take your purse or wallet, leave him/her alone. They have problems of their own (obviously).

Why don't you try to help them?

Why don't you try to make a difference?

People are not trash to be discarded.

Try talking to these people before making such sweeping judgements.

Or you can just continue to feel superior and look down your nose at them.

You can't just throw everyone in the same garbage can.

We all have a story.

Most ignorant rant ever.
Or thread for that matter, a lot of my friends are addicts, so am I... But in everyday life I give, help, listen, care, love and so do my friends.

Being an addict doesn't make you a scumbag, bashing on addicts does that.

Nuff sed personnal rant over

Why should i help someone that is hell bent on ruining there own lives, I would gladly help someone who tries!

I'm all for giving someone a hand up but not a hand out, call that what you want but at least its honest ...there was a story in the local paper a month ago about a local drug addict that stabbed his pet dog because he had no drugs and was frustrated!!....you wanna help scum like that you go ahead ...

What do I think? I do not think its up to you to say what a waist of life is. What should they be doing? Should they have a job and work every day for crap they do not need thus adding to the big toxic waist pile of # we are making? Spending 8hrs a day 5 times week at job witch takes up more then half of their waking life?
Should they be helping grandma cross the street? What defines a good life?
THE DEFINER!

The only reason you think these people are "scum bags" is because of the lies the TV and your schools have told. Brainwash!! They are hurting no one, they are not infringing on any ones freedom, get over the brain wash.

Scum bags are, killers, pimps and child abusers because they hurt people. Addicts do not hurt any one.

It's called escapism. Anything to make a person numb and helps them lower their inhibitions is considered to be a good thing. Just look at all the alcohol ads and you can see right away that the government wants people to use/drink. It's sexy and cool. Just look at the H3 kennels/frats that started in your country in 1938. This is how they want people. They're easier to control when intoxicated. Literally: Not a care in the world.

I won't say that I'm above escapism. It's nice sometimes, but I don't indulge on a daily basis like I used to. I realized that I wasn't becoming sexier or "cooler". Then, I started to notice that the people I called friends didn't have my best interest at heart. The best thing I ever did was to cut these people out of my life and start using in moderation. Once the addiction takes hold, it's difficult to only use intoxicating substances once in a while.

At the moment, one of the people I have befriended in my town is dying from his constant beer consumption. Within a three week window, he's lost 15 pounds and looks like he was just released from a concentration camp. I feel bad for him because he is a nice guy, but people who become addicts will not abandon their best friend (ie alcohol or other drug). It's sad, but there's not much you can do if someone isn't willing to help themselves.

As a reformed 'scumbag' (7 years clean)... I can understand why you may feel that these people are "hell bent on ruining their lives". However, I can tell you from experience that these people don't exactly wake up one day and say, "You know what, I think I'm going to start down a path of self destruction and see just how low I can go".

People get better on their own terms and time frame, not yours. People with a mentality like yours often present yet another obstacle for these people to try to overcome, and attitudes like yours often reinforce the negative self-image of the people you are ranting about, making it even worse.

Sometimes, all it takes for people to find their way again is that one person who can see past all the crap and realize that there is something good left inside that just needs a little help. Someone threw me a lifeline once upon a time, maybe instead of griping about these people you could do the same for someone else. Every kindness, no matter how small, can go a long way to building someone up so they are strong enough to get better on their own.

For some, I'd agree...and some really want to be there and like life on the street and too blasted to know what day it is. Most? You gotta be kidding me..... Too weak? perhaps...Not everyone is made of the same mental stuff and so, write them off and hope they die quietly so as not to disturb anyone?

It's an odd argument for me because I am conservative and welfare outside of those with true inability to work is just wrong to my thinking. At the same time...What to do... We can't ignore the weakest of our society. That is a fine way of judging a civilization and we're coming in real mixed..both the US and UK.

I'll leave it to wiser men than I to come up with a solution and I don't have the resources any longer to help them....but I won't hold contempt for those truly hitting and sitting on the bottom. They have nothing left to hold or lose....It's a situation to pity in my mind, not hold contempt for. I wonder how many can even imagine, for a moment, what that level of hopelessness is like? Hopefully none here ever learn how close...how little it takes...to join them on that stip of concrete.

WOW so brain washed.
Get a job so i can pay the Goverment. ALL YOU ARE IS A INCOME TOOL TO THE GOVERNMENT.
Yes pay taxes to a corrupt Government that does not listen to the people. Lets give more power to these bastards. You know its your money that is helping to kill innocents as well as your own population. Why not help these addicts. You think calling them scum bags is helping them? It only makes them want to use more because you are only causing them more pain.

This has to be one of the most ignorant and insulting threads I have ever read. People develop addiction for many different reasons. Usually because of child abuse, death of loved ones and certain clinical forms of depression and stress. My girlfriend works with vulnerable adults, varying from world class athletes to highly successful artists who eventually could not handle the pressure and expectations. Most turned to drink and drugs and their lives were ruined. If you have no experience with such people or can't comprehend why they are in the situations they are, I suggest you shut your mouth.
